"I've never really heard traditional Chinese music." Remi said, trying to think if he'd ever heard it unintentionally. "Traditional Korean music, yes. I have a cousin that plays those drums." He said, motioning the movements of how the drums were played, though he couldn't remember the name of them. He glanced to Minglong, "small group? That's a thing?"
He furrowed his eyebrows. Clearly he had a lot to learn about music still. "There's more than one?" He felt like an absolute beginner again, where all the different vocabulary confused him more than helped.

Minglong smiled and said, "There are a lot of instruments that are completely different in traditional Chinese music. I can play several, and I started learning them earlier than oboe and violin. Actually, I picked oboe and violin because they were sort of similar to some of my favorite Chinese instruments, erhu, which sometimes people call it a two string violin, and suona, which is a lot like the oboe. But I also play pipa, it is a plucked string instrument, and guzheng, sort of like a sideways harp, and Yangqin, it is called hammer dulcimer in English. Those are all for strings, and then a also a flute called dizi, it is a sideways one. I am best at erhu and suona though. But I like all of them, and still practice. I could show you at some point. The YouTube, it has many videos that are good of them too though. If you have seen the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the sound track of that, it is that sort of music, Tan Dan, the composer for that, he is a very amazing composer."
He paused, running out of breath a little bit, and feeling like he had probably babbled a bit much. He looked down and rubbed at the back of his neck for a second, momentarily awkward. He said quietly, "Sorry, I get excited about the music sometimes."
Minglong thought about what Remi had said and turned to one of those topics, "There are small groups, chamber music, and they audition in a week or two. If I can get a few arrangements done before the auditions, then I might be trying to start a group with oboe and a string trio. I am already in a string quartet for violin. There are not enough traditional Chinese instrument players for me to do that at the college, but I play them for things at the temple sometimes."
Minglong nodded about the question about the Telemann and said, "Fantasias are a type of short piece that were used a lot in the baroque period. Telemann had several of them. They are usually called by their key signature, so a Fantasia in A minor, or G major."

Remi seemed a bit shocked as he looked to Minglong, "bloody hell, man. Is there anything you can't play?" He asked, ultimately just amazed. He shook his head, "no, that's wicked. I wish I could have that sort of dedication." He had a feeling his mind wouldn't take well to learning more than one instrument. It would somehow be too confusing.
"That sounds awesome..." Remi began, thinking for a moment before adding, "Can I join? How?" He wanted the chance to learn more about orchestras. This guy seemed to know what he was doing. Maybe being in a chamber music group would boost his wow factor as well, considering being amazing so quickly would only get him so far for so long.
"Oh." Remi said finally, with a frown. He figured he should really pay more attention to the music he was learning, but instead laughed it off, "I have a bad memory sometimes, but I'll uh.. let you know which one it is when I can look at it."

Minglong blinked a few times, trying to process the strange way Remi used words in this context, and he asked hesitantly, "Just to be sure, wicked in this context, it is a good thing?"
He added, a little bit more sure of himself, "There are lots of things that I cannot play well. I am not any good at the percussions, I always seem to hit them not the right amount of hard. And there is also only so much time in a day to practice, so there is not time for me to be good at many other instruments."
He nodded to Remi's question about chamber music, "The auditions for chamber music groups, they will be next Friday I am thinking from the schedule. I would have to check. There is a list of already planned groups that need new members, but the people who are interested, the director, he tries to put them into groups that can work together. There is a form that you can fill out that says what sort of group you would like and if there are any of the planned groups or already existing groups just short a member you would like to audition for."

Remi smiled, "Yes, it's like um..." He tried to think of a simpler word, gripping the air as he tried to think of one. "It's like it's really cool, I guess? More slang." He said with a short laugh.
"Percussions seem awesome, but my mum wouldn't let me anywhere near a drum set. Probably thinks I'll make too much noise." He said with a simple shrug. He never really got into drums, so he wasn't too torn up about the fact.
He stroked his chin, looking off into the distance. "I want to hear more traditional Chinese music. Can I join your group, only knowing violin?" He questioned, though since it was a strings chamber group, he hoped the answer would be yes. "I guess I'll have to talk to the professor."

Minglong smiled at Remi's enthusiasm for the idea and said, "You can definitely audition if you are interested. I'm not sure how many people will be, and I'm still working out a few details of it. I'm doing arrangements for the Western instruments though, but maybe with some Chinese instruments too."
He paused and then added, "I think that the professor, he will probably make the announcement about the auditions at the next class."

"Is there a particular piece that's better for audition or...?" He questioned, his voice fading off. Chamber music groups seemed like a good lesson for orchestras, something he was unfamiliar with but wanted to learn about.
He nodded, "You think so?" He nodded, "Then I'll wait until he brings it up."

Minglong looked thoughtful for a second, and replied, "For audition, you should use a piece that you are comfortable with, so your normal audition piece, it is good. If you have more than one, whatever it is that you feel it shows your ability as a soloist better."
Their walk across campus had brought them to where Minglong turned off to go back to the apartments, and he pointed out the street and said, "I have to turn here to get home. So unless you are also walking this way, then I'll see you later. In class day after tomorrow unless I run into you on campus tomorrow."
