Minglong wasn't entirely sure he understood not wanting to go to college. It was a place where you could learn all sorts of exciting and new things, and sure, not everyone liked those sorts of things, but Remi was taking all of the same classes that he was, and apparently had been doing well enough in high school classes to be able to come to the college for classes. Minglong asked, voice slow and thoughtful, "Do you have any idea what you want to do instead?"
He had guessed that Remi was younger than him, but he hadn't been sure by exactly how much. He added, "I'm nineteen, so not much older than you."
His brain caught up to another part of that comment and he asked, slightly confused, "How does homeschooling work? Is that a common thing in USA?"
The last part of Remi's comment utterly baffled him though, and he narrowed his eyes, half convinced that the other man was trying to pull a trick on him, "What do dishes have to do with being good looking?"

"Not really." Remi said honestly. He looked up thoughtfully, "I mean I like violin a lot, so I've been kind of looking at music college, but otherwise I really don't want to deal with more schooling." He shrugged, "It's not for everyone, I guess."
He furrowed his eyebrows, confused for a second before remembering some of his cousins from Korea were confused about the concept as well. "That's right, it's not that common in Asia..." He mused before clearing his throat. "Basically a parent, or occasionally sometimes it's another adult that's done homeschooling before, will teach a child the stuff they should be learning in school if they can't attend on a school campus for whatever reason." He explained. "Both of my parents are doctors, of sorts, so when I kept getting expelled, they decided to just homeschool me. The only other option was sending me to a school about an hour away, and they didn't do boarding for national students, so it would've been a real drag. My mum started teaching me instead of dealing with that." He thought a moment, "I believe it's the most common in the US, but I'm not sure if it's common in general. From what I've seen, the average American kid knows about it though, no one really questions when I tell them I've been homeschooled most of my life."
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion for a moment before laughing and shaking his head. "No, no, sorry... I tend to use a lot of um..." He could barely talk through his chuckles. "It's British slang. It mean you're good looking."

Minglong nodded along to Remi's comment, "So conservatory? Those are hard to get into, but if you really want to focus on music it would be pretty incredible."
He didn't mention that he'd been recruited by a few conservatories. He didn't feel like it would be the best conversational tone, though he was starting to get more curious about how good of a player Remi was if he was looking at conservatory. He asked, "How long have you been playing violin? Is there a really good teacher around here that you know of?"
Minglong bit his lip and admitted, "I have enough trouble with local slang here, so I think that Brittish slang may be a little bit hard for me. But thank you for explaining. And for the compliment."

"Essentially, yeah. I guess so." Remi said with a shrug. "I barely started a year and a half ago, though. It'll be two years in... April? I think." He frowned slightly, "My band teacher said I learn quickly for being so new to it, but I know I've still got a lot of practice on violin before a conservatory would consider me." He said honestly. He looked to Minglong, "It could be my bias for him, because he was the only tolerable teacher at that bloody high school, but my band teacher is a pretty good teacher. He does private lessons, too. He knows other instruments as well, not just violin."
"Well, mate, if you're going to hang out with me, you better read up on British slang." He smirked. "I'm known for confusing the others with it. And it's rather fun."

Minglong nodded, surprised slightly that someone who had started so recently was at a level to be playing at the college orchestra, because for all that it was an open class, it took some skill to be up to it. He said, "Now I'm curious, what chair did you make for violin? Are you playing first or second violin?"
He added, realizing that that might sound a little bit like he was asking Remi to prove himself, "I am kind of impressed, that is a little bit a short time to be ready to play at an orchestra level. Your teacher, he must be pretty good."
Gears turned in Minglong's brain and he said, "Wait, the music teacher at the local high school, Yunjin-ge? He goes to the same temple as me. I did not know that he offered private lessons. I should talk to him about that, even if it is just for someone to practice with."

"Um..." Remi began, thinking about it for a moment. "First violin, but I'm ninth chair." He told him. He knew it was impressive, but it wasn't attention-grabbing. "I mean maybe at some point I'll go for first chair. But I did my best and got ninth so." He punctuated his sentence with a shrug.
He blinked a few times, "I didn't realize he was Buddhist..." He muttered, not particularly bothered by it rather than just having not thought about it. Then again, religion in general wasn't Remi's favorite topic. He nodded. "Yeah, though I call him seonsaengnim. I think that's his first name." He said with a half-smile.

Minglong blinked a few times rapidly in surprise, and he said, "Wow! For two years, ninth chair, it is really good. Especially for the first violin because more people want it because there are more solos for it. Most of the people who are sitting higher than you have been playing for at least the decade. I am impressed."
Minglong nodded and added, "He is half-Korean, half-Chinese, yes? Has an adorable nephew? Then we are probably talking about the same person."

Remi straightened up, smirking a bit. "I know. Everyone was shocked. I wasn't though. I was hoping for a higher chair." He bragged simply, like it was obvious he should be this good. In reality, violin was something he enjoyed, and it was a more relaxing way of calming down than boxing, which just wore him out more than actually sedated him. So he ended up practicing a lot more than he ever originally intended.
He thought a moment, a small "hmm" escaping. "I think so." He said, though he wasn't actually 100% sure about Yunjin's ethnicity. "He speaks Chinese and Korean, but I've never outright asked him." He explained. He nodded, he'd seen Yunjin's nephew a couple times when he went with his mom to pick up Anya. "Definitely has an adorable nephew, though." He confirmed.

Yunjin could hear the boasting tone in Remi's voice well enough, and he wondered if the younger man was doing it to cover some insecurity, but he smiled and told him, "I will look forward to hearing you play then. I should be there for auditions to quartets and other small groups, though I am at least staying in the one from last term, but I am interested in maybe doing some other projects this term. There are some very interesting duet and trio pieces that I would love to get a chance to work on. Perhaps something for the oboe."
He smirked at Remi, "Who knows, perhaps we might even end up working together. Are there any composers you particularly like?"

Remi nodded along to his words, understanding only about 85% percent of it because he was still familiar with all of the technical terminology. His eyebrows remained furrowed as he thought about what the other man was saying. "The oboe... I saw your section playing it earlier, it sounds really pretty." He admitted simply.
Remi shook his head at the question. "I don't really have an all time favorite composer, but I've liked Fur Elise for as long as I can remember, so I tend to default to saying Beethoven." He told him honestly. He smiled, glancing to Minglong, "I'm not against learning composers to learn songs, it's just when I'm listening to music I tend to listen to more punk rock or dance." He explained.

Minglong smiled at the compliment and said simply, "Thank you. I am glad that we're all pretty good players, since there are only five of us, which is one more than last term. Oboe, it is not the most popular instrument."
Minglong nodded at Remi's words and asked curiously, "What made you interested in learning the violin, if you do not listen to much of classical musics. I listen to other things also, mostly Chinese and some Korean pop, but I do a lot of listening to classical music and traditional Chinese music and have for a long time, because it is one of the connections to a lot of what I play. Of composers you might have heard of that I really like, there are Teleman and Copeland."
He tilted his head and looked at Remi, curious to see if the younger man knew the two composers he had mentioned.

"Um." Remi coughed, trying to find a way to explain it without it coming off as immature. "I came across a cover... Have you ever heard of Lindsey Stirling?" He glanced to Minglong. "I heard one song from her, then listened to everything I could find on Youtube." He had had a lot of time that day. "It kind of escalated to spending the entire day listening to violin covers, I was... entranced, I guess. I told my mum I wanted to start learning violin, and well, that's that." He said, adding in a shrug at the end. "I'm still getting accustomed to Classical music, but I do recognize the two composers you mentioned. I think I've learned some songs of theirs." He said, though he honestly never paid as much attention to the composer as he probably should.

MingLong nodded and replied, "I have heard of her! Her covers, they are quite good. And there are many interesting violin covers out there, and people who do interesting modern music on violin."
He smiled and added, "It is good to find something like that too. It makes it interesting to learn something."
MingLong tilted his head thoughtfully and asked, "What do you use as an audition piece?"

Remi nodded, "I'm still not good enough to do my own covers, but I'm getting there. And I've started messing around with violin versions of contemporary music, so it's been a... well, it's been something, for sure." He said with a small chuckle. He was always surprised at how much he must enjoy violin, considering he'd sometimes accidentally practice for hours.
He snapped back to attention, snapping his fingers as he thought of the title. "Telemann? Um... Fantasia?" He said, tilting his head to the side. "seonsaengnim had me learn it a few months ago, now I feel like I could play it with my eyes closed." He said with a small chuckle. He recalled his mother often telling him it was time to sleep while he was practicing, as especially after learning he'd have a chance to join the orchestra class, it seemed like that was all he did in order to make sure the piece was perfect by the time he auditioned.

Minglong nodded along and said, "That sounds like fun. I do not usually do contemporary music covers on violin or oboe, but I do like putting traditional Chinese music on other instruments. I play several traditional Chinese instruments as well, so trying to see what pieces for violin sound like on erhu, or the other way around, it is interesting. I am actually working on some arrangements for myself right now that I want to see if I can get the orchestra director interested in helping me find a small group for."
He tilted his head in response to Remi trying to remember the name of his audition piece and said, "There are a lot of Telemann Fantasias for violin, but they are good audition pieces. I have used a few of them in the past."
