Minglong had been really relieved when Remi had finally gotten to the point where he was interested in practicing violin properly again. While Remi had been in the hospital, Minglong had been one of the nurses' favorite people around Remi because he'd brought him sheet music and motivated him to practice the violin, but Remi had definitely slipped in his progress some from what Minglong had seen. He'd finally managed to convince Remi to do practice lessons with him, and while he'd not been planning on asking for anything or much for them, Remi's mom had insisted on paying the full price. He didn't know exactly what the details behind that were, but he after he'd asked her a few times if she was sure, he'd decided not to question it.
Now, Remi was late. Minglong had cleared out the practice space in the living room and set it up for a lesson, which had taken a little bit of work since he and Baian normally had it more set up for them each to do their own work, which meant that a lot of Minglong's stuff was plugged into his computer instead of out where they would be audible. Baian was at UW though, and it was the middle of the day, so most of Minglong's neighbors were unlikely to even be home. Remi was in fact late enough that Minglong was starting to worry. He debated calling his friend to see where he was, and if that didn't work calling Remi's mom, but he settled on starting with a text of, You nearly here? Do you need the new address again?
He knew that he'd given Remi the location of their new apartment, but he also figured that there was a chance that Remi had forgotten and gone to the old place. That would be something that would make him late. He also knew that there was a chance that Remi being late meant that something was wrong.

Remi let out a sigh as he glanced at the time again. He was very late, he knew it. Luckily Minglong was a friend on top of his new violin tutor so it wasn't super serious that he was late. Still, the first time left (right at the time they supposed to meet), he had to go back home halfway because he forgot his violin of all things, and then while he was there he overheard Anya and his mom talking about his sister planning to audition for Dreams Entertainment. When they noticed he was back, Anya seemed too excited almost, and recalled her being a toddler, talking about how much she loved music and dancing, though she was never as serious as she was now. Still, it put him into a daze that made him barely hear his mom when she asked why he was back so soon, muttering a simple "forgot something" as he went to his room. Anya followed him the entire time, trying to get some sort of answer from him as to his opinion on her leaving the country to train. Eventually, he snapped at her, though it was just, "Leave me alone."
He left for the second time, this time with violin in hand, and put the address into his GPS again. He was relieved his mom let him use the car for this, or else he'd be hours late instead. A little over halfway through, the text message from Minglong made him double check he hadn't used the old address, despite specifically remembering he deleted the old address so that he couldn't make a mistake like that. He didn't reply back, though he had a nagging feeling that would worry Minglong more, but by that point he was almost there anyway.
He parked on the street as he pulled up to the address. He got up to the front door before checking the address with his GPS again and then knocking. He was well over an hour late by now. Should he apologize? He'd play it by ear, depending on Minglong's reaction. Though that reminded him... Sorry for snapping at you. He texted his sister. She just sent him two emoticons in response: angry face and the one sticking out its tongue. He shrugged, figured she'd be over it by the time he got home.

Minglong was relieved when there was finally a knock on the door. It was Remi, with his violin and phone in hand, and Minglong started, trying to cover the worry in his tone with teasing, "I was starting to worry that you might have fallen in a ditch on the way over and that I might need to contact your mom. Come in, shoes by the door."
Then, he saw Remi's face. He paused. Something was off. Remi seemed out of sorts, more so than he had for a while since he'd finally gotten out of the hospital. Minglong's voice was soft and reassuring as he continued, "Is everything alright Remi?"
He didn't press, and he made it easy for Remi to come fully into the apartment. He was glad that it was just the two of them there because he suspected that Remi was going to be a bit of a mess that day.

Remi stepped inside and pushed off his shoes, picking them up to place them by the door as nicely as the other pairs of shoes. "Uh... yeah, sorry, I was a little slow at moving today..." He muttered. He walked in a bit and looked around before speaking agian, and even then it didn't answer Minglong's question, "Nice place. It's just you and Baian now, right?" He asked, turning to look at his friend.
He noticed the set up in the living room, gently placing his violin on the ground by the couch before plopping onto it. He looked at Minglong, holding eye contact while he spoke, "Anya is planning to audition for a Korean entertainment company. She'd be leaving by next summer if she gets in."

Everything was ready for them to start practicing whenever Remi was ready, but Minglong was pretty sure that Remi was not, in fact, ready. He came and sat down beside his friend, giving Remi plenty of space on the couch and replied to Remi's first question, "Yeah, just Baian and I are living in this one. It's smaller, and if guests need to use the restroom, they have to walk through the bedroom which is a little strange, but it's a good price."
He examined Remi's face for a second, trying to distinguish the Remi emotions that he was seeing there. It was hard to tell sometimes, but he'd slowly started to get the hang of them. He asked gently, "You'd miss her a lot if she left, wouldn't you? From the way you're reacting, it seems like you think that she's pretty serious about it?"
He waited then, not staring at Remi, but watching his responses a little bit. He knew that Remi got overwhelmed by his own reactions to things sometimes, and getting him to slow down and actually think about it could help.

Remi nodded. "She's been serious about dancing for a while now, and she's been fascinated with music for as long as I can remember - which, granted, isn't saying much, but still." He told Minglong. "I just... can't fathom having her so far away from me. She's become a lot more independent but I can't protect her when she's over a thousand miles away. What if she gets bullied? Or hurt? I'm sure you've heard of some of the scandals companies have gotten into. I guess Taijia's going with her and he's a hard-headed kid, but he's also tiny." He huffed and ran a hand through his hair, leaning against the back of the couch with a frustrated grunt.

Minglong listened to Remi's worries, a thoughtful look on his face. When Remi seemed to be winding down, he nodded and said, "I get why you're worried. She's really important to you, and you've not really been away from her much."
He asked, "What did you think that it would be like if you ended up going away for conservatory? I know that's still something that you talk about sometimes, but it's not in the super near future. But is that something that you'd considered? Would it have been different from this somehow?"
Minglong had had to suppress his laughter over Remi's explanation of Tai. He told Remi reassuringly, "Your sister's smart and resourceful, and so is Tai. I don't know if it helps your worries any, but Tai's been doing martial arts classes with me at the temple for years now. He might be tiny, but he's way stronger than he looks. He's in the advanced classes these days, and he can do throws and sparring with the adults."
He sighed and shook his head, "The physical side of it isn't and should be everything there though, but Anya is good at expressing herself when she needs things from what you've told me and what I've seen. She knows that her family will back her up in a bad situation. Even far away, that's pretty big in terms of being confident enough to stand up for herself."
He hoped that Remi was listening fully and feeling a little bit less worried. He added, thoughtfully again, "I was a little older when I did it, but I can tell you a little what it was like to go so far away to a place where I wasn't completely fluent. If that would help?"

"Of course it would have been different!" Remi said, his voice raising though he clearly wasn't angry. "If I leave, not only is she almost safer, she still has mum and dad. If she leaves, she has no one." He still held that believe that he was dangerous for her, despite never having physically hurt her, it was bad enough he had already mentally scarred her.
"I guess that helps a bit... And I know she's brilliant and tough to boot, but I guess... I never got over her being my little shadow, never wanting to be too far away." His face twisted into a grimace as his chest hurt, and he wondered for a moment if this is what melancholy and reminiscing felt like. If that were the case, he was thankful for his bad memory. It wasn't very common for him to think back on the past, so he never thought about what it must feel like to remember "good" or "better" times. "I'd be the proudest brother around if she made it in, but I also hate the idea of her getting past auditions..." He paused for moment before adding, "Yes, please."

Minglong's voice stayed soothing and steady as he said, "There's a big difference between having no one and having people who are far away. You can still reach them. You can call, they can come visit you, and worst case, you can go back to where they are."
He thought about what Remi was saying, and he told him, "Try to focus on the pride part then. She still might not make it through auditions, at least not this time, but if she's serious about it, she will probably try again. And she'll be disappointed if she doesn't make it in, especially if Tai does. If that happens, she'll need you to be the best big brother you can be probably. If she does make it, even though she'll be happy, she's going to need you to be proud of her because it's a big accomplishment and a big change for her. That doesn't mean that you can't be upset or angry or all the other feelings from it, but don't have them at her. Show her the proud part. You can come tell me all about the parts that hurt, or someone other than Anya."
He thought back to moving to Cedar Beach. He told Remi, "One of the hardest parts about moving here was that I wasn't really fluent yet. I could speak enough English to get by, and I made it work, but it would have been a lot harder if I hadn't met Baian, and I hadn't started going to the temple. There were plenty of people who spoke Mandarin and Cantonese around, and that helped me a lot, but there was a phase where language was just really hard and I had to think all the time. Even so, there were people who helped a lot, and I was learning a whole lot, very fast. Food was the other hardest thing to adjust to. I still don't like a lot of American style food, but I found the places that I can get food that I like, it just took a little while. I did miss home sometimes, but I was having a huge adventure, learning new things and meeting new people."
He paused for a second and said, "I had goals for coming here, and I think that that helped a lot. It wasn't a decision that I made without a reason. It sounds like Anya's put a fair amount of thought into this, and your parents will be able to help her with that decision. They have that piece of responsibility for her."

Remi let out a sigh, "I guess... Though if you haven't noticed, I kinda suck at the "comforting" thing." He said bluntly. "I suppose that explains why she's been stealing my Korean textbooks, though. Taijia's fluent and she's always wanted to be... In fact, we've both griped to our dad that he should have taught us Korean. As far back as I can remember he's been fluent in English, so that's not a good excuse for him." He furrowed his eyebrows, looking off into the distance. "Maybe I'm also a little jealous?" He confessed. "I like music, too, and I'm not much of a dancer but I like singing. I probably would have auditioned, or wanted to, when I was her age. Especially since at her age I had a toddler for a sister who loved watching me dance to KPop..." He faded off, looking down at his hands and fidgeting with his fingernails. "But if they took one look at my medical records, I'd probably be denied. There's now evidence of idols with mental disorders, but except for one idol who seemed to have a stress-related psychotic break, none of them have something as serious as schizophrenia, so it was an idea I squashed almost as soon as I thought about it..."
He let out a breath and straightened up, wiping his hands on his jeans and looking to Minglong. "Anyway. Despite you being a bit older than her when you first came here, it's good to hear it went alright for you, and also to see that you're doing perfectly fine now. I hadn't considered asking someone who went to another country at a young age, for some reason. Probably because when we moved from England, there were some shocking cultural differences, but nothing nearly as bad as what Anya could encounter while training. What if she gets extremely homesick? Sure there's American restaurants in Korea but I still can't help but get worried about her."

Minglong nodded and told Remi, "Anya knows you. She might think that something was wrong if you were trying to hard to be comforting. But you said that you were proud of her, and that would probably be something that she would want to hear, now and especially if she didn't make it through. Telling her you're proud of how hard she's working, and that you're proud of her trying things even when they're hard, those are things it sounds like you actually believe, and she would probably be happy to hear them. It helps that they're true."
Minglong grinned a little bit at him and said, "I guess that we will have to work extra hard at getting you into conservatory in that case. That way you too will reach a music dream."
He remembered something then, and he said, "Just a second," before going over to his desk and looking under a few things before he found a pamphlet. He extended it to Remi and said, "I know that you were looking at some programs farther away, but I don't know if you know much about Cornish's music program. It seems like something that might be a good place to see about starting, and your mom might be more comfortable about it because it is nearby."

Remi seemed to consider Minglong's words and nodded slowly. "I guess. I still don't like the idea of her going there alone..." He lowered his voice, "After all the sexual assault scandals that have happened in recent years, I still don't want her to go. So it's almost like I want her to not pass auditions... But then that makes me a terrible brother. I'd be too msug about it."
He was happy to change the subject, looking over the pamphlet. "No, I didn't know..." He muttered, looking over the pamphlet. "Is it a good program?" He asked, not looking up.

Minglong looked a little bit sad at Remi's response, and he said, "Do you trust your sister to tell someone if things aren't right for her? She's not going to be all alone. But there's a lot of ifs in this whole situation, so maybe it is better now to distract yourself from it and put your focus on a thing that will make you feel better."
He gestured towards the violins behind and beside them. He nodded at the pamphlet that Remi was now holding and said, "Yes, it is a good program. I've met some former students and professors when I've done some work with the Seattle Symphony, and they are all very good at what they do. I went to a workshop there recently, and I might actually be helping hold some workshops on traditional instruments at some point because I started talking with a professor."
He didn't know if the program would be a good fit for Remi, but he figured it would be at least worth showing him. He added, "Plus, if you finish your distribution requirements at the CBCC, and then you go there, you will be able to focus on the music while you are there. Think about it, and once you know if you are interested, you might want to talk to your mom about it."

Remi nodded, about to say something but instead looking at his violin case. "I guess so..." He responded after a while, though he finally seemed willing to change the subject.
"The Seattle Symphony?" He seemed to latch onto those words, thinking about something. "So if I go to Cornish University, there may be a good chance I can get acquainted with - and potentially get into - the Seattle Symphony?" He leaned against the back of the couch, seeming to consider this opportunity. He crossed his arms loosely over his stomach, giving Minglong a nod, "CBCC was pestering me to pick a major, so I chose music and will be doing a music theory class next semester, but I have ultimately been focusing on getting my GEs out of the way." He told his friend. "I'll have to look more into Cornish University though."

Minglong nodded and said, "It's not easy to get in, so you'd have to work hard, but this would at least give you some of those connections, yes. Like I said, take that home, look it over, go look at their website, and if you're interested, talk to your mom about it. I think that she'd be very supportive in helping you navigate getting in."
He knew that Remi and his mom had been having their ups and downs, but he also knew that Remi did look to her for guidance however reluctant to admit it he might be. Also, this would give her a constructive thing to fuss over Remi's life about where she could actually help, and Minglong suspected that it would keep her from making Remi feel like she was pressuring him about things a lot.
He picked up his own violin and checked its tuning, starting to run warm ups and glanced at Remi, gesturing with his bow for Remi to actually properly get his violin out and ready, "You should warm up properly."
