Remi nodded, tucking the brochure into his pocket before staring blankly at his violin case. Minglong snapped him out of his daze pretty quickly, whether it was intentional or not, Remi couldn't tell. He pulled out his violin from its case and checked tuning, adjusting where needed and did his warm ups to prepare for this lesson. "You could probably help me out, too." He mused aloud between notes. He looked to Minglong, "to get in, I mean. Since you've met some of them already."

Minglong smiled at Remi when he asked about his help, and he said, "I can write you a recommendation. I don't know people on the admissions board, I don't think. I can help you with your audition piece or a portfolio too."
He grinned a little bit more teasingly then and added, "However, the most important thing that you can do to help yourself for this is to practice, so let's start."
He plopped a piece of sheet music on the stand that he'd set up for Remi and said, "This is a Copeland piece, and it is one that I think that you'd like. I'd set it aside for you because it seemed like something that would be a good challenge for where you are in your musical level right now. Today seems like a good day to get started on it all things considered."

Remi seemed to contemplate Minglong's response and eventually shrugged, "works for me." He muttered. He smirked at Minglong's teasing, but didn't say anything. He seemed to be distracted by the piece placed in front of him by the time he was ready to comment back. He looked over the sheet music, nodding a bit. It seemed like it would be a good challenge, and eventually he broke out into a grin. Good, he thought. "Let's do this. It looks bloody difficult alright."

Minglong laughed at Remi's assessment of the song and said, "That is why I picked it for you. I know that you are good at rising to challenges. They keep you on your toes, and that keeps you more engaged. It's why you progress so fast when you put your mind to it."
He hoped that this challenge would help distract Remi from dithering over his little sister growing up and getting her own goals. He indicated the piece and said, "Why don't you give the first four lines a try? It will be good sight reading practice."

Remi took one more glance at the music before bringing his violin up. He played the first four lines, not without mistakes, but did okay. He brought the violin down and looked to Minglong, a grin on his face. "You really weren't kidding. This'll be a fun challenge, though." He said, almost more to himself.

Minglong watched and listened carefully as Remi made his way the first few bars of the piece. Keeping the time by lightly tapping his finger against his arm. It was about how well he'd expected Remi to do, rising to the challenge. He nodded when Remi stopped and replied, "That was why I picked it for you."
He lifted his own violin and said, "Part of the reason that you were fumbling on some of the fingering is that you're drawing out some of the notes too long and not giving yourself time to move your hands. It's not quite staccato, but it's getting close. Give the notes a moment in the air and that will give you time to move your fingers."
He demonstrated what he was talking about, enjoying the fact that the piece made him move his hand rapidly to get each new series of notes. He looked at Remi and asked, "Does that make sense?"
He grinned, tone slightly challenging, and said, "Do you want to try the next part? It gets more interesting."

Remi listened carefully to Minglong's critiques, trying to take them in an dactualy remember them so he could apply them. He mimicked what notes Minglong was showing him, trying to get down the transitions he would need to do. As Minglong finished his demonstration, Remi nodded at his question. He glanced over the next four lines, nodding in silent agreement at Minglong's comment. "Yeah. It's still stuccato-esque, right?" He asked, looking over to Minglong as he finished his question.

Minglong nodded and said, "Yes, the first half of the piece is in the nearly staccato style. It is in the second half that you will have to do the sliding notes, which are a different kind of hard. I do not think that you've done a piece yet where you had to slide your fingers down into the next fingering so that you had the note seem to slide into place?"
He was glad that Remi seemed focused. It was a better state of Remi than he had been in when he had arrived. He was relieved that Remi had been able to shake off the frustration and upset and get himself focused on the thing that was making him feel better.
Minglong glanced at the time, noting that they only had about fifteen minutes left of their allotted lesson time. He wasn't sure if Remi's mom would be alright with him staying out past his lesson, but he gently added, "We have about fifteen minutes left of the lesson itself, so we can get through this phrase of the music, and you can take the sheet music with you and practice the ones we have been working on, and give the next parts a try so that you can show me at the beginning of next lesson. If you think that it would not get you in trouble, and you would like to, you would be welcome to stay for dinner. There has been soup becoming fully cooked since yesterday, so it will be ready when Baian comes home."

Remi shook his head, "I haven't, so this'll be an interesting learning experience." Remi thought aloud. He looked at his phone as Minglong mentioned the time, surprised at how fast it had gone by. He looked over the music again, finishing up practice before commenting on staying or going. "Dinner sounds great, but my mom mentioned something or other about needing me back home after practice, I think." He looked off into the distance as he tried to remember exactly what she needed him home for, but couldn't remember, and just shrugged. "Probably wants me to clean or something." He muttered. "I'm definitely intrigued by the soup, but I'll have to take a rain check today, I guess..."

Minglong nodded and said, "We can do a rain check then. Next time, I will remember to text and ask earlier in the day so that you can check with your mom ahead of time."
He indicated Remi's music and said, "Be sure to practice it at home, and if you're feeling comfortable enough, try to start bringing it up closer to the marked tempo."
Before he forgot, he added, "And make sure to look into the information I gave you and talk to your mom about it."
Since the lesson was technically over, and they'd gone over about what Minglong had expected to, he packed up his violin neatly and started shifting the furniture back around a little bit. He said to Remi, "I will definitely try to make sure we have the chance for you to stay over to dinner one of the times. I think that your mother thinks that I'm a good influence, so that should help."

Remi nodded, "Okay, sounds good." He looked to his violin case, hoping he wouldn't forget the pamphlet was even in there. As long as he practiced, he'd remember. Without as much of a rigid schedule anymore, his practice occasionally got pushed aside, but he'd have to make sure to do it. "I will." He promised Minglong. He wanted to master this challenge piece, even if it took him a while. "I'll see you later, then." He said with a wave.
