MingLong looked a bit confused at Remi's sentence, and he replied, "Mandarin has tones also, but they are different from the ones in Cantonese a little bit. I have been told that they are a little hard to learn too close together because they are just similar enough to be a confusing thing, but neither of them is really harder than the other."
He sipped at his tea and said, "There are plenty of people around here that do know better though. There are the exchange students at the college, but there are also a lot of families who come from places where it is done the right way. I think that they are just a little lazy about it. Maybe because there is not any place better very close."
He added, "I am glad that it is not just Western food in general that is too much sweet. It is very frustrating sometimes, how sweet, and how little vegetables, US food uses. I am glad that BaiAn is a very good cook, because it means that there is always good food. I am learning from him, but I am not all that good yet. His family owns a restaurant though, and he learned since he was very little."

Remi nodded, deciding Mandarin still seemed easier in the long run. He looked at his drink, shrugging about the quality. "I guess they figure most people who aren't Chinese don't know what it's supposed to be like. I mean, I didn't know." He said simply.
He nodded again, furrowing his eyebrows as he thought of something, "Admittedly, it's not a lot of vegetables in Britain either, but there's definitely more on a plate than here. I guess I've kinda grown used to it, since I've been here about six years now, but I remember at first I was just shocked at how different American and British cuisine could be." He shook his head, staring off into the distance with an amazed look on his face. "Originally, I really thought it was mostly America drank more coffee than tea. Turns out it's a bloody hell of a lot more differences."

MingLong thought about it and said, "I think that for me, the biggest food difference, it is that it can be hard to find proper rice here. Of all the things, the too much meat and not enough vegetables, and the everything is too sweet, it is the not having rice always that really confuses me."
He paused and sipped his milk tea, which was good, though far from the best he'd ever had. Then he asked, "Your family, do they eat much Korean food? It is a tasty food, though not one that I learned much of until I was here because it is one of the family styles BaiAn knows the cooking of because his family is part Korean, though the main of his cooking is north Chinese and Mongolian styles."

Remi thought about it, but shook his head, "For whatever reason, despite being directly from there, my dad was never big on cooking Korean food. Occasionally my paternal grandparents would send us kimchi or other things that kept alright, but by the time I was born, he was barely speaking Korean with me, let alone when Anya was born. I don't know why he did it that way, but he did, leaving us SOL on being the cool bilingual kids." He joked lightly, shaking his head. He stirred his drink, raising an eyebrow in interest, "Oh really? I should meet this BaiAn guy."

MingLong nodded and said, "Clearly that means that you are just needing to practice the language through classes maybe. Learning languages, it is a useful skill."
MingLong was vaguely amused that Remi had said that again, though he remembered that Remi had said his medications and condition sometimes made it so that things slipped his memory. MingLong replied, "Well, if you have ever gone to the library, he is working there many days, so may already know him."
MingLong added, "If nothing else, you will be getting the chance to be meeting both of my boyfriends who you have not for the recital at the end of the term."
((NOTE: I'm thinking that we probably want to end this thread soon?))

Remi rested his chin in his hand, looking just past Minglong contemplatively. "Ah, maybe. At some point, I'll look into it. Learning languages on my own has never been very successful anyway." He mused simply. "I go to the library occasionally, but not really." He said with a shrug.
He raised his head, pointing a finger slightly towards Minglong. "Oh, I forgot about that. I guess I will get to meet them then." He said.
((I'm okay with that.))
