"Yeah, the girls also seem really happy I'm there and available for them." Misuk replied shyly.
She smiled, "she seems like a nice person. And like, the little I've seen of her in behind the scenes clips, Yuseong really likes her." She thought aloud.
She stirred her drink, trying to think of things she would want a new friend to know. Probably nothing too heavy, it was still their first meeting, after all. "Hmm... My family is... complicated. My dad got remarried when I was about nine, and my step-mom brought her daughter into the family, and then I have a baby half-brother." She smiled softly, "well, he gets mad when I call him a baby brother. He's in his second year of high school. The news that I got a new job didn't really hit him until the first time he saw me in a picture with J.B.N.. I also have a much, much older brother. I already mentioned everyone in my family are teachers or educators." She thought a moment, trying to think of what else she could say. She giggled as she remembered a fact that she didn't share as often, "Before KPop, I only listened to pansori and trot. It's all my dad listens to."
She paused, formulating a question for Taeyeong, "What is one thing you love and one thing you hate about having a famous family member?"

Taeyeong nodded, "She's of course really close with Josh-oppa, but Oppa's the other main face of her fashion line, and he only has good things to say about her. I don't know how close the other members are to her, but I know they have a generally pretty good working relationship with her. I wonder if she's going to start using JBN for her women's line at some point."
She listened carefully as Misuk described her family and made small sympathetic noises of encouragement. She said, "Mixing a family like that sounds hard, like, I saw the effects of mixing different cultures in a family, but it really mostly happened before I was born, though it has weird lingering effects like Oppa and I not actually having perfect language overlap. But being in the middle of mixing two different families' ways of doing things must be jarring."
Taeyeong chuckled and said, "My favorite thing is probably getting to give Oppa shit when my middle school students have crushes on him, and like the general reactions of my students. My least favorite thing is probably my family's personal stuff, and Oppa's personal stuff, and so mine by association ending up newsworthy."
She shrugged and said, "Mostly it doesn't hit me too hard, though interacting with parents at my job who are fans of my brother, or coworkers, can be a little weird. It didn't used to happen much, but it's starting to, and I suspect it will only get more frequent as we all get older. On the bright side the ones who are especially Oppa's fans actually tend to be people I get on with pretty well who are pretty reasonable. I guess that it tracks, his fans are like him."
She had a thought and said, "Oh wait, I have a specific one that drives me nuts! When people ask me who my favorite member is, like other than Oppa, and expecting gossip or something, like in the 'Oh you have a chance with him you're so lucky' way. I never am able to get it through those people's heads that I'm not interested in any of them like that, and it's definitely weird."
She added conspiratorially and quietly, "Man, it would make that question easier if Josh-oppa also came out and people knew they were together. I could just make a joke about having the same taste as my brother or something for the ones that it wasn't getting through to."
She sighed and said, "Are any of the fandom spaces being weird about you having moved into working with Yuseong? Like I could see that being something that people were weird about."

Misuk nodded, "Yeah, it was challenging, and honestly still is sometimes, but I manage." She replied simply.
She giggled a little, "I would imagine that would get weird and annoying!" She agreed. She wondered what she meant by her and her brother having the same tastes. Did she think Joshua was cute? Did she mean she was also queer? She'd have to find a way to ask for more details on that later.
She thought a moment, "I mean, kind of? I had to leave my most visible fandom spaces when I joined the company, and some of my online friends said I was be disloyal or something. Which like, whatever, they can think what they want. The people important to me were cool about it, so I'm not feeling like I lost my entire friend presence online." She explained. There were a good handful of people who stopped talking to her because she left the forum, but that was on them. She left a way to contact her if they wanted to stay friends, and the ones she expected to want that did reach out.
"Hmm... If you could go to any country besides Korea, which would it be and why?" She asked, feeling like it was a bit of a stretch of a get-to-know-you question, but it wasn't necessarily a bad one. She did have to think of an answer herself in case the question was asked back to her, though.

Taeyeong could see that Misuk had some complicated emotions about leaving the fandom spaces, but also she didn't want to pry, so she left the open ended comment, "That seems like it could be a weird change to leave those spaces after so long, but I'm glad you've been able to keep the friendships that were important to you."
Taeyeong didn't even really have to think to answer, "I really want to visit the parts of the Philippines my grandma's family is from. I learned Tagalog from her, and it's important to me, but I've never had the chance to go. Oppa's been to the country but not the right Island for a schedule."
She paused for a moment and added, "What about you?"

Misuk smiled in response. Taeyeong seemed to understand despite not being in those spaces herself. In all honesty, her chest still ached when she thought about having to leave. A lot of her formative years were spent with those same people, the forum had been important to her.
She nodded, "That makes sense, and I feel like that would be really cool to get the chance to do." She thought a moment about where she'd want to go, like really. She didn't have a culturally blended family, according to her family's records they'd been in Korea for an extremely long time, possibly even before family records were kept. She liked travel, but never had many opportunities to go abroad. She had done it once, to support Yuseong when they had their Japanese debut, and she really liked it. "Hmm... Maybe Washington? I remember seeing pictures on Kangwan's Instagram, and the place looked very beautiful, and Kangwannie kept saying the way the seasons were was very similar to Korea. I've done some research myself, and it seems like the state has a lot of beautiful nature. I'm not a great hiker, but I enjoy nature, and taking nature pictures is always interesting. Like, how can I make this picture of a tree one that can take your breath away? You know? So I think it would be neat," she giggled, signaling she was mostly joking about the next part, "and it would also let me see where one member in every Dream Entertainment group has lived at some point in their lives."

Taeyeong nodded and said, "From pictures and what I've heard it is beautiful. I feel like you might well have a chance, like if they ever do a tour, it feels like any Dreams Ent group basically has to go to Washington because there's a member who is from there or has lived there and has family there."
She grinned and said, "But also, now I feel like I need to see some of your nature pictures. I've seen the sorts of pictures you take of people, and they're great. Did you know that Oppa had a picture that you took of him and Josh at a fansign as his phone background for a while?"
She added, "I did a fair amount of hiking growing up, though I've never been as physical as Oppa, so I didn't take to it as much, but Appa works for the national parks services, and we lived just outside of one of the big parks with a lot of hiking, so I got taken hiking a lot. And now my best friend works as Appa's coworker there, so I'm probably going to end up hiking at least once any time I go home unless the weather is awful. I visit more in the winter than the summer."

Misuk was a bit shocked to hear Taehoon had kept one of her pictures. "I didn't, no! Gosh, that really feels like an honor." She mused. She couldn't imagine many fan sites that could say their idol used their pictures.
She tried to think of a nature picture she had taken and settled on one from when she went on a hike up Gwanak Mountain. She found it in her phone pictures, and turned her phone so Taeyeong could see it. She had laid on the ground and taken a picture of a large tree right on the path, the picture looking up through the branches. On one branch, there was a nest, with a small bird about to land on it. She hadn't quite mastered movement photos at the time, so the bird was a bit blurry and hard to see, but her main focus had been the tree anyway. The bird had just been a bonus. "The picture quality kind of got downgraded when I uploaded it to my phone, but this gives you an idea of the nature photography I like to take. I don't really name my pictures, but if I did, this would probably be something like 'Larger Than Life' or something kind of silly. Maybe something relating to poetry, but nothing is coming to mind right now." She rambled.

Taeyeong nodded, "Yeah, it was from the fansign the day after their first win, Josh-oppa was tucking a flower behind Oppa's ear or something. It was cute, and thinking about it now, they had just started dating then, hadn't they, that's extra cute."
Taeyeong looked at the picture that Misuk showed her. She smiled and said, "It's beautiful, and like there's something really peaceful about it, like the world is bigger than you and that's OK."
She smiled across the table at Misuk and said, "I'd never even have thought to look at a place like that to get that picture. It's really cool. Never tell anyone in my family I said this, but now I kind of want to take you hiking so you can point stuff like this out to me. Just like, not a power hike. A stare at the pretty things hike."

"Oh, I remember that one! That does make it extra cute." Misuk said, letting a small giggle escape.
Misuk looked at her picture and smiled, "Yeah, I guess that's kind of what I was going for. Like, feelings or things can feel monumental in the moment, but it's fleeting, and it will grow into something beautiful and breathtaking." She found another picture she had taken, on a different day on the SNU campus. "This one is kind of the opposite. Really a 'stop and appreciate the little beauties in the world.'" She explained, showing Taeyeong a picture of a pink flower with a bumblebee in the middle of it. It was another one of her more amateur shots that turned out much cooler than she intended, as the way the zoom in happened compared to the pebbles around the flower, it made the flower and bee look almost microscopic. "I had a lot of good luck when I was first getting into nature photography, and so weird or neat things would happen by accident and I'd happen to get a shot, like the bird in the tree, or the way this picture turned out to look even smaller than it actually was in real life. I'm better at doing things on purpose now, but it's still neat that it happened, because it encouraged me to continue trying." She explained.
She smiled a bit mischievously and said, "Maybe I will have to take on hikes. The thing about photography is that it doesn't make for a fast hike. Maybe we can meet up early one morning and take a hike somewhere." She suggested. "With the expectation it could potentially take all day."

Taeyeong looked at the other picture that Misuk showed her and smiled, "That's really cool too. You clearly have a talent for these sorts of pictures as well as pictures of people. I hope that the company showcases your photography plenty. I know that you're doing a lot of the social media stuff, but you've got the skills to do some really nice photo shoots."
She smiled and said, "That does sound like my speed of hike. I don't mind being out in nature, I just come from a family of fast walkers, like they aren't even trying to rush through a hike or not appreciate the area, I just always end up lagging behind. I usually only go along when one of our grandmas is going with us at home because Oppa is the only one who remembers to slow down for me, but everyone remembers that grandma has slowed down because she getting old."
She paused thoughtfully for a second, still thinking about having someone who could actually keep her in the loop about things in the company who wasn't going to be emotionally repressed about it. She said, "So, going back to earlier, do you have any good company gossip to share? Oppa is himself and always tries to tell me the best parts, but also he can be kind of oblivious sometimes."

Misuk looked at the table and smiled, muttering a small, "thank you..." She was still getting used to praise from people other than other fans or her little brother on her photography. Her parents never understood why she took all these photos of idols, and so by the time she got into nature photography, they never really asked to see her photos anymore.
She nodded at Taeyeong's description of hiking with her family. "Yeah, I tend to do hikes by myself because every time I go with someone, they get annoyed cause I keep stopping to take pictures. So, different, but same."
She thought over any company gossip she could think of. "Hmm... I don't have proof, but I suspect there are many more queer people in the company than people think. From what little I've seen from the girls, there's definitely some feelings going around. Like it kind of hits you in face, especially for Seojin and Elena. Um... among the foreign girls and trainees in the company, I'd say Taijia adapted the best so far, though Felix and Anya are close to him and so they seem to be easing into it better. Elena is friendly but not used to Korean customs and so often comes off as overly affectionate..." She thought over other things, but couldn't think of any. She shook her head and gave Taeyeong an apologetic smile, "I think I'm too new still, maybe by the time we do that hike I'll have some proper gossip for you."

Taeyeong nodded to Misuk's comment and said, "I mean, I do know about Thomas and Kangwan, and I've met and talked with Tai. That doesn't surprise me that much. I mean it surprises me a bit by sheer density, but I'm also somehow unsurprised that that's where Oppa would have ended up, in a company with so many others who are queer. He hadn't actually told me directly before the coming out incident, but I've known since he was in high school, at least to an extent."
She paused, uncertain about how much Misuk actually knew about what had happened with her brother's best friend. She knew that Taehoon had talked about it a few times in varying ways, but not exactly how much.
Taeyeong added, "It's OK, I'll look forward to the gossip when we go on that hike. Message me what times are good for you when you know. I'm pretty much free weekends, but I know that those can be busy. Otherwise, it depends on school schedules for me." |

Misuk's eyes widened. She remembered hearing Taehoon talk about the friend he had in high school, in the beginning he would say that was why he wanted to protect any of his fans who were LGBTQ+, and never wanted to make them think they weren't loved. It was one of the many reasons he was her ultimate bias in KPop. "That would make sense..." She said, looking away.
She smiled, figuring Taeyeong would probably want to change the subject instead of letting it get too heavy. "Of course! Once I get a better feel for my schedule, I'll let you know, and we can plan a hiking trip." She said chipperly. "If it is during a school break, do you normally go home during certain times so I can keep track of when is a reasonable time to suggest it? Also how do you feel about wet or cold hikes? They wouldn't be quite as long, obviously, but the winter does bring some pretty scenery. So like, during the long break in February would be a good time as long as I'm free." She paused, realizing how that sounded, and laughed, "Obviously we missed this year, but like... for the future."

Taeyeong grimaced at the mention of cold and wet. She said, "I usually make a point of being outside in the cold and wet as little as possible. My asthma is always worse in the winter, and I don't particularly like being wet. The snow can be fun for like half an hour. I'm not completely averse to a February hike if we can get a clear, comparatively warm day, but that's much more a go hang out indoors in a cute coffee shop weather for me."
She thought for a second about her schedule and said, "I always try to be home for the Lunar New Year, but other than that, visiting home is often a little bit more spontaneous for me. It's not that far, and there's always someone who would be willing to pick me up from the train if I need them to, between grandparents, parents, and my best friend. Sometimes I have things planned out more in advance, but not usually."

Misuk took mental note of the new information, "And see, that is why I asked. Only warm days for hiking, cold days for coffee shop..." She managed to stop herself before she said 'dates,' but only barely. "... Hangouts."
She thought over Lunar New Year, usually her family convinced her to go home for that. "I also tend to go home around Lunar New Year, so we're even on that. I'll shoot some dates to meet up your way once I know my schedule better, and we can go from there. Sound good?" She asked, giving Taeyeong a smile. Overall, she'd say she did a good job pretending she hadn't been flustered by the other woman's beauty the entire time. She even made her a friend! She'd call that a success in her book.
