YEO TAEYEONG
N/A |
29 | November 14, 1994 |
female | Bi |
Dog | Middle School Math Teacher |
Seoul |
Appearance
Face Claim: Hwang Eunbi (SinB of Viviz, formerly Gfriend)
Taeyeong has long black hair, often worn with bangs, skin that tans somewhat easily though not as much so as her older brother's does, and big dark brown eyes. She usually wears contacts these days, but does need pretty strong corrective lenses and can sometimes be seen wearing glasses.
She wears a lot of cozy sweaters and flannels or button downs over tshirts. She's not uncomfortable in skirts, but usually gravitates towards slacks or jeans. Overall, she prefers fairly casual clothes, but is very used to formal ones for work and such.
Personality
Taeyeong is mostly fairly outgoing and charming, but she definitely has a serious and focused side as well. She makes casual friendly acquaintances easily and true friends very rarely (in fact her best friend other than her older brother has been the same since childhood).
She and her brother are mostly a study in contrasts, but they share a subtle sarcastic sense of humor, a high level of organization, and a deep care towards those around them.
Sometimes Taeyeong resents having been the golden child because her family's expectations can be very stressful, but she also can't resent her brother for it at all, it's certainly not his fault he was dealing with a learning disability without help.
She can hold a grudge for a very very long time.
Family
MOTHER
Name: Min Yeonghee
Birth Year: 1974
Occupation: Preschool Teacher
Feelings Toward: Superficially they have a lot in common, but her mother regularly kind of assumes that Taeyeong is exactly like her. They have butted heads over the years because of it. Genuinely loves and cares for her mom, but wishes that she was a little better at understanding how both the kids are very different from her.
FATHER
Name: Yeo Seungsoo
Birth Year: 1968
Occupation: Korea National Park Service
Feelings Toward: Very close and comfortable. Taeyeong has always basked in the easy acceptance her father gave her. He's one of the only people who never really pressured her on her academic path, he just wanted her to do well because she liked doing well.
OLDER BROTHER
Name: Yeo Taehoon
Birth Year: January 4, 1994
Occupation: Idol (Yuseong Member), Choreographer
Feelings Toward: Taehoon is one of her best friends in the entire world, and she is also very protective of him. They were always very outwardly different. Despite being 10 months and 10 days younger, she's been taller as long as either of them can remember. She was much better at academics than him, and always helped him with school, and almost all of his friends before Yuseong were her friends first. She knows that he's just as smart as she is, and him finding out about being dyslexic really affected how she approached being a teacher.
MATERNAL UNCLE
Name: Min Yeongjin
Birth Year: 1974 (her mother's twin)
Occupation: Buddhist Monk
Feelings Toward: While she was never as connected to temple or her uncle as Taehoon, her maternal uncle has always been a kind presence in her life.
PATERNAL UNCLE
Name: Yeo Seungwoo
Birth Year: 1963
Occupation: High School Teacher
Feelings Toward: She hates him for how he's always treated her older brother. She can be icily cordial to him in family settings, but she longs to tell him why he was a shitty teacher and shitty responsible adult figure towards Taehoon.
MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER
Name: Sun Ahji
Birth Year: 1955
Occupation: was a stay at home mom and housewife, helped raise her grandchildren
Feelings Toward: Fondness. She has many good memories of playing at her grandparents' house while listening to stories from her grandmother and sneaking her favorite snacks.
MATERNAL GRANDFATHER
Name: Min Bohui
Birth Year: 1949
Occupation: Retired School Teacher
Feelings Toward: Fondness and respect. He was always closest to Taehoon, but she loved him for his gentleness and kindness, and she always listened to his advice about teaching. She learned Chinese from him some, but it was in some ways one of Taehoon's things that she didn't want to steal. His parents came from Shandong, China.
PATERNAL GRADMOTHER
Name: Ong Elizza Yeonghee
Birth Year: 1945
Occupation: housewife, was a stay-at-home mom
Feelings Toward: Close and fond. She knows that her paternal grandmother favored her over her brother, but it wasn't in the mean way. She learned a lot more Tagalog than her brother did, but about the same amount of Spanish (so his Spanish is now much better than hers). She also learned to cook from her grandmother. Elizza's parents came from the Philippines.
PATERNAL GRANDFATHER
Name: Yeo Hyunjung
Birth Year: 1937
Occupation: Retired School Teacher
Feelings Toward: Deeply resents for how he always treated Taehoon. Feels like he views her as a proper product of the family values instead of a person. They never really connected well.
BEST FRIEND
Name: Ji Sungmi
Birth Year: 1995
Occupation: Korea National Parks Service
Feelings Toward: When they were little, Sungmi was Taeyeong's best friend (even though she was the year younger), and her older brother Sunggyu was Taehoon's best friend (even though he was a year older). They lived in the same neighborhood and their parents were friendly. After Sunggyu passed away, Sungmi spent more time at the Yeo family's home than her own. She's close to both siblings, but she and Taeyeong are forever best friends. They were roommates through university, but Sungmi returned to their hometown (and now works with Taeyeong's dad), and Taeyeong stayed in Seoul to work and be closer to Taehoon. Sungmi sees her parents more often than she does, but she and Sungmi meet up several times a month.
History
Taeyeong was born and grew up in Taean-gun, Chungnam, where her mother was a preschool teacher and her father worked for the Korean National Park Service. She was born a mere 10 months and 10 days after her brother, but she was also quite early, and was often sick as a very young child. Their family was fairly poor, but they were never so poor that food or housing was something that they felt worry over. They grew up in a sort of unusually mixed family, with their maternal grandfather's parenrs having come from Shandong, China and their paternal grandmother's parents having come from the Philippines. She learned some Mandarin, Tagalog, and Spanish as a child because of this; however, the only one she could be considered as speaking well is Tagalog.
Their family was fairly religiously Buddhist, and before the kids were born, their mother's twin brother had joined the Buddhist temple in their hometown as a monk. Probably because she was less close to her grandfather and uncle than her brother was, she's also much less seriously Buddhist, but she still goes to temple semi regularly (attending the same one as her brother in Seoul).
Taeyeong and Taehoon were very much outward opposites from a young age. She was taller than him from the time they were toddlers. He was athletic and quick to pick up physical skills. She was academic and quick to learn intellectual skills. Because of their respective more obvious talents, she quickly became the bearer of many familial expectations in a family of educators. Fortunately, she actually liked the idea of becoming a teacher, having started very young being the one who always helped Taehoon with school stuff, not because he wasn't smart (most of the time she just had to tell him what the question said and write down what he said), but because he struggled immensely with reading and writing. She didn't know why as a kid, and she wished it was as simple for him as when it became clear she needed glasses to see things like school boards, but she didn't have the resources to understand until he was older.
She immensely begrudged her paternal grandfather and paternal uncle for treating Taehoon like he was an idiot and not worth their while. She was very close to both her grandmothers, and while Taehoon learned a lot of Chinese from their maternal grandfather, she picked up a lot of Tagalog from her paternal grandmother. She tried not to take their maternal grandfather's attention from Taehoon because he was the only grandparent who really treated him like he was special and important.
The siblings were best friends with a pair of siblings close to them in age who lived in their neighborhood. Sungmi was a year younger and her best friend, Sunggyu was a year older and his. She sometimes feels a little guilty that she got to keep her childhood best friend while Sunggyu committed suicide when they were teens, but the whole thing definitely hurt all of them. She tried her best to support and stand up for Sungmi and Taehoon during that time, and in the aftermath, with her brother going to study abroad for a semester, Sungmi became a pretty permanent fixture in their household. They've stayed best friends, and probably will be for their entire lives. She despises Sungmi's parents, especially her dad.
She went to Seoul National University to earn her teaching degree, focusing on middle school math. And once she was a full teacher ended up teaching at a public school on the other side of the Han River from Dreams Ent. She has met all of Yuseong over the years, and likes Josh and Kangwan the best, but thought that Qiwang was sweet as well. She and Shihyun sort of had beef, but he was close to her brother, so she wasn't going to ruin that for him, but she's not sad to have seen him go. She's friendly if sort of in awe of Josh's aunt. She likes Thomas and Tai from meeting them at temple from time to time (when she actually goes), and she is charmed by the fact that her brother has basically acquired a younger brother figure to mentor. She is so grateful to Josh for figuring out about Taehoon's dyslexia.
She works really hard in her job to identify and support students with the kind of learning disabilities that are hurting them who slip through the cracks the way her brother did.
She's very proud of how outspoken her brother is on issues that matter to him. She wasn't surprised to find out he was queer (or with Josh once they told him), but she was a little rattled by how. She has aggressively managed their family around his coming out (to no one's surprise, their maternal grandfather and uncle along with their father had the best reactions).
While she's bi in theory herself, she's never really pursued a romantic relationships. She figures it will happen when and if it happens, and she can go looking if she ever actually decides it's worth the effort.
