Gohyuk smiled and said, "That's good. Is the one you were taking with Korean instruction treating you well?"
He cackled at Remi's question and said, "Well it's an appropriate name for him, he got even bigger after I got him too, I felt prophetic."
He got everything started cooking, and rolled the kimbap while he had to wait for things in the cooking process. He wasn't a gourmet chef by any means, but he was pretty efficient.
He told Remi, "Food is nearly ready, so you probably want to wash the dog off your hands, and possibly use the lint roller on the bathroom shelf."
He started setting the table in between other steps and called out, "What do you want to drink? I've got tangerine juice, tea in bottles, or water, or I can make tea."

Remi nodded, "Yeah, I had already learned almost all the vocabulary from Orchestra, so it hasn't been difficult."
He snorted a laugh and looked over Daeyu. "I guess. Don't people normally name dogs after food or something?" He asked, though he was just teasing Gohyuk. He stood up and looked at his clothes. He hadn't thought that much fur had transferred over to him, but his clothes said otherwise. "Uh, juice is fine." He said, heading off to the bathroom. He found the lint roller and used it on his clothes, then washed his hands. It was still kind of weird to be spending time with a dog, but it was working, which meant he and Gohyuk would have a place they could be in private. The feeling of today was still a little weird, but he could get used to it.
He came back out of the bathroom and sat at the table to stop himself from petting Daeyu more. The dog's fur was really cozy.

Gohyuk chuckled and said, "If I didn't already know you hadn't been around dogs much, I'd know now. People name dogs all sorts of things, from descriptions to people names to yes things like food. I just went in a particular direction with descriptions, and it both amuses me, and it makes people laugh and relax and be less intimidated."
He finished setting the table, bringing the dishes to serve from and putting utensils and plates and a glass of tangerine juice at each of their spots at the little dining room table. Gohyuk definitely felt another moment of domesticity to see the little two person table set like that, for the two of them to have a meal sitting across from each other. Again, he realized he really would not mind having that every day. He wouldn't bring it up yet, it wasn't even guaranteed that Remi would stay in Korea after he finished his degree, but Gohyuk could see a potential future pathway where they settled into something like this. He didn't want to spook Remi with that thought.
He smiled at Remi as he emerged covered with significantly less dog hair. He said, "Perfect timing, I'm just going to give Daeyu his food, and then I'll join you at the table. Feel free to start serving yourself up some of it!"

Remi shrugged, "I haven't been around many animals in general." He told Gohyuk honestly. He sat down at the table, watching Gohyuk as he prepped the dog food. His nerves had all but disappeared by now. Despite only recently moving in, Gohyuk had managed to make the apartment quite comfortable. Remi didn't know what the future held, it probably depended on if he got a job after school was done. If he didn't, he'd probably return to Washington, but if he did, he'd stay here even if it meant fighting with his mom.
He realized belatedly Gohyuk had told him he could start serving himself, and so he did so. The food looked good, and he was hungry.

Once Daeyu was fed, Gohyuk joined Remi at the table. He checked to make sure it looked like Remi had enough on his plate before serving himself as well. He said, "You'll have to let me know what you think of the food. I'm mostly used to just feeding myself, though when I had far too many roommates when I was first in Seoul we did cook communally a fair amount. They were still teaching me to cook at the time though, to take care of myself in a lot of ways. Before that I could do well enough to make myself ramyun or other premade meals you just had to do a little too. I've gotten better since having places of my own, but this is my first real proper kitchen space, and my skills are definitely still evolving."
Gohyuk considered his next question for a few moments, eating to cover that he was considering what to say. Finally he asked, "Have you had any thoughts about what you want to do next year, after you graduate?"
He figured that was an easier question than what he really wanted to ask, which was whether Remi was planning to stay in Seoul. He knew there was a good chance of at least a few more years, since Remi was at least in part in Korea as his younger sister's official adult, but he didn't know if that was officially enough to keep Remi there once he'd graduated. He certainly hoped Remi would be sticking around.

Remi tried the food, impressed by the taste if what Gohyuk said was true. "I wouldn't believe this was your first real kitchen if you didn't just tell me. It's really good." He praised, being honest.
He ate his food in silence for a minute before replying to Gohyuk's question. "I've been thinking of applying to some orchestras outside of the university setting, but I just don't feel like I'm ready, you know?" He shrugged, taking another bite of food. "Ideally, I can stay at least until Anya's a legal adult, but if I can't get a job after school, I won't have much choice but to move back to America. At least now I know I can trust Thomas to look out for her if I do have to return, but I'd rather be able to stay here."

Gohyuk smiled at the praise of his food, genuinely pleased that Remi appreciated his efforts. He said, "I guess I'll just have to keep improving to impress you more then. I'm glad you like it."
Gohyuk nodded along to Remi's explanation and said, "Well if you don't audition the answer will definitely be no, and you are a part of the orchestra at Seoul National University, which is competitive. Like from my understanding there are orchestras that recruit from our school directly. Are there other sorts of jobs you're looking at?"
Gohyuk paused for a second and then asked, "How's your sister been? You've been getting to see her a little more regularly now that you're living a little closer to her company, right? Her group's songs get requested at the bar sometimes, it's good dance music."

Remi let out a huff of a laugh, "I guess so." He replied, giving Gohyuk a smirk.
He paused before continuing, "I guess in my mind, I haven't been practicing since I was able to hold a violin and so I'm not as good as the other violinists. I still think that even knowing I got into a competitive orchestra."
He thought a moment about what else he could do. After eating a bit more, he shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe English teacher, but I have a criminal record if they get a comprehensive enough background check, I probably wouldn't get it if I applied. And I don't know that I'd even like kids that much. I like my sister, and I guess Taijia's okay, but we don't know each other well. It kind of feels like it's get into a non-school orchestra or leave. I took psychology as a minor to appease my parents, who kept telling me I should add on something practical, but I don't want to go into anything psychology related." He sighed, pausing his meal to stare at the ceiling as he said, "Even part time positions and school-related positions don't want to hire me because I have a mental illness." He let out a sound that sounded slightly like a growl as he returned his focus to his food and muttered, "like I asked for this."
He realized he had gotten onto a rant and paused for a bit to calm down, focusing on his food. He talked to Anya more recently than he had seen her, since she had been busy with schedules. "A bit more, yeah, it's easier to drop in when she's free rather than trying to fit in some time in her schedule. And we still talk on the phone often." He thought about going to a club and hearing his sister's voice. "Okay, like, I agree it's good dance music, but I would lose it if I heard my sister's voice while I was clubbing." He said, a hint of a playful smirk on his face.

Gohyuk said thoughtfully, "Does it help that every time I've heard you play, imthought you sounded amazing? Like I may not be serious orchestra musician level of musician like you are, but music was my minor, and it is actively a part of my job now. I like listening to you play."
Gohyuk mulled over Remi's concerns for a moment. He said genuinely, "It sucks that something so out of your control like a mental illness could have such impact on your choices, especially since as long as I've known you, you've had it under such good control. And we have some time while you're finishing school to brainstorm other options, but I bet you can get into an orchestra if you practice and try hard."
He paused again and added, "Though I wonder if there's some sort of translation or copywriting job you could do well, one where you knowing English and Korean would help and having subject specific knowledge would help. Obviously I'm rooting for an orchestra, but I hope for you to be able to stay here, for your sake but selfishly too."
At Remi's comment about hearing his sister's music in a club, he teased, "So does that mean I need to make extra sure it ends up on a set if you ever visit me at work, or extra sure it doesn't?"

Remi smiled slightly at Gohyuk's compliment. "Maybe a bit." He got himself some more food, thinking about what else he could do. Translator or copywriter didn't sound like a bad idea. "Well, I still, y'know, hear things that aren't there." He said, spinning his hand around his head, "so maybe translator wouldn't work. The medication only mostly helps, but when I'm stressed or experiencing strong emotions, they tend to show up regardless. But like, maybe copywriter?" He paused to eat some of the food. "Sounds monotonous though." He chuckled, "fun fact, since I've gotten more comfortable in Korean, sometimes the hallucinations also speak Korean. It probably shouldn't amuse me as much as it does, but it does help distinguish between hallucination or real life, since Thomas and I usually use English at home." He sighed and refocused on the original topic, "Maybe once I'm closer to graduation I'll start auditioning for orchestras outside the school. Can't get into one if I don't even try."
He scrunched up his face, "ew, please keep it off the speakers as much as you can if I'm visiting you. The idea of dancing and then hearing my sister's voice would ruin the vibe so bad. Like, don't get me wrong, her group's song is a banger, but it's the last thing I want to hear in a club."

Gohyuk pointed out, "Not all translation is real time or even audio based. Like there are things that are text translations. There's probably companies out there that would pay someone to do like correspondence translation or something, making things sound professional for them in English. I can't speak to whether it would be monotonous or not though."
He was thoughtful about how Remi had described the hallucinations for a moment and then asked, "Are the ones in Korean fundamentally different in any other way? Like you don't have to tell me more if you don't want to, but that's interesting. You know more about this stuff than me, of course, but that seems like it says something about your level of fluency getting really high that your subconscious is doing things in Korean. Do you dream in Korean at all?"
Jumping back to the previous topic, he sighed and said, "I wish that I had a back up job that I could have lined up for you, but the bar is not glorious in its staffing needs, and I don't know that those sorts of jobs would be good for helping you stay here."
It wasn't like he could offer a marriage of convenience or anything like that anyhow. Korea wasn't there, yet. Even if it was, that would be getting ahead of himself. First, he needed to have Remi over in his space more regularly.
He smirked, "As the manager, I can just tell whoever's on music not to play JBN songs, though there's the temptation to have one sneak in just to see your reaction. But honestly, I'd probably be more likely to invite you to swing by a night we had live performances. They're more interesting, and there's still plenty of dancing."

Remi nodded, "Yeah, true. It does sound monotonous regardless, though."
He thought a moment, "I think after about a year of being here, I realized the hallucinations were coming back - uh, I mean, I was told the medication I'm taking may lose effectiveness over the positive symptoms, but I could take it as long as I wanted. And I haven't had any visual hallucinations since taking it, so I've just stayed with what works. Anyway, so I've been here about a year, and I was coming back home late from studying, and the subway was like empty, but I kept hearing something. I thought it was maybe an announcement or something, but realized it was an audio hallucination that was in Korean. They're not really different, but they're new, so I often can pick them out easier." He explained, proud to do it all in Korean. He learned a lot of medical Korean pretty quickly once he got there. At first, the psychiatrist he went to tried to convince him to switch to Korea's typical treatment program, and he really had to put his foot down to stay on his current regimen of medication. "And yeah, at this point I dream in Korean and English about equally." He added.
Remi took a bite of food and gave Gohyuk what he hoped looked like a smile. "I don't know that working in a bar would be right for me anyway. I've tried working customer service before and I'm uh... Not Good."
He thought a moment. "I guess... If I'm really desperate for citizenship, I do qualify to just... apply. My dad was born in Korea. I don't wanna do military service, but it's not like I'd qualify anyway." He shook his head. "But I don't know yet. I do like it here, though." And I like being with you. He didn't say, but convinced himself he only felt that way as a friend.
"Don't you dare." He growled, but softened quickly. "Maybe, when's the next time you guys are getting a live performance?"

Gohyuk contemplated Remi's explanation of the hallucinations for a bit. He said, "That seems like it would have been disconcerting in the station, but it's good at least that they're a little easier to distinguish, yeah?"
Gohyuk chuckled over the idea of Remi in customer service and said, "Yeah, I would never even dream of putting you behind a bar or as a bouncer. I do work with like an accountant though, and we have performers, though I suspect that the sort of performance that involves more audience interaction would not be so much your thing. And last I checked you didn't do drag."
Gohyuk made a face at the mention of military service and said, "Yeah, it sucks, I'm glad that even if you ended up applying for citizenship you wouldn't have to do it. Let me know if you need a pair of native Korean eyes on any paperwork if you do go that route. Like I'm sure that there are people who are professionals and stuff who could do a better job, but I'm convenient and happy to help."
He thought over the bar's schedule and said, "Live performances are not a rare occurrence, though it's more uncommon that we have someone who's not basically one of the house performers who work other jobs in the bar too. If you want to see our performers, that's pretty much any Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday. We have an indie rock group this Friday I think, and someone else week after next. Fridays are a good bet for live music."

Remi nodded, "Yeah..." He wasn't used to the idea of being able to talk so openly about his mental illness. It was kind of nice, if he were being honest with himself.
He chuckled, trying to imagine himself in drag. "No, I don't do drag. It's fun to watch, I am just not... I can't." He said, struggling to find the right words in any language.
"Yeah, I will." Remi said. He still wasn't sure if he'd even have to take that route. If he could get into an orchestra, then he could get a work visa and not have to worry about it as much. He wasn't exactly attached to his American citizenship, but he was unsure he wanted to lose it all together. His dad would theoretically be happy about him gaining Korean citizenship. He'd have to think about it, and it would probably also depend on what Anya decided to do with her own citizenship.
He realized he had gotten lost in thought and missed a part of what Gohyuk had been saying. "Noted. I'll have to stop by more often. It's a little boring when I can't drink alcohol, y'know?"

Gohyuk nodded and said, "No, I get it. I don't do drag and it's not for me, but I love it as an art form. When I first moved to Seoul, I lived in a tiny two bedroom with five of the drag queens that are the main other set of employees at the bar. They're the ones who taught me to cook and like, be an adult in a city basically. They're some of my best friends, and they dressed me up once or twice, and it just felt like my skin didn't fit. Sometimes I do bits as 'the guy' in their stages, and it's fun, and they're all incredible. Keeps me up on my singing and performing."
Gohyuk told him, "I'm not drinking most nights when I'm there, don't actually drink that much to begin with anyhow, but you don't drink when you're behind the bar. I like it when we have live music or interesting theme nights because it's more interesting when you're working it, and also it means that the people who are coming for the community and to be in a safe queer space where they can be themselves and be celebrated aren't as driven to and by the alcohol. It's part of why I like the bar that I ended up at. Like, it was a little bit of luck involved, it was literally the gay bar that I went to my first night in Seoul, and they had an ad up that they were hiring a bouncer, went back the next morning and applied, and just sort of stayed. I probably would have baffled at the idea that I would be one managing it a few years later if you'd told me then. Plus, I promise, if you come in, I will make you the fanciest mocktails, so no alcohol but fun drinks anyhow, that I can come up with that sound like something that you'd like, gives me a chance to practice."
He wondered what Remi would think of the people at the bar. It was a pretty wide demographic, and Gohyuk appreciated that there were older guys who came in, they had interesting stories and it was important to him to connect to them. He huffed a small laugh and said, "You will get hit on though, a decent percentage of people go there to find hook ups."
