Jesse smiled at the compliment, hiding behind his notebook as he confessed, "when you said to marry you I almost said ok out loud." He lowered the notebook, clearly nervous as he smoothed out the page over and over. "You are also quite attractive." He wiggled a finger at his chin, "I didn't know I'd go for the... graying look." He added, feeling like he was getting more and more embarrassed with each sentence. "I also haven't flirted in a long time, so it's another thing we're both not good at. We can suck at it together." He said, his voice still quiet but uncharacteristically chipper at the last sentence.
"I'm glad my boujee latte caught your attention." He joked, using a term a coworker had used after seeing his more fanciful latte art one day as he was teaching them how to do it.

Adriel blushed, again happy with his skin tone for hiding it. "I did ask you to marry me already, didn't I?" He reached up to his chin, "yeah, I'm no longer vain enough to try and dye this black. Though with the surge of the term 'daddy' becoming popular I've been debating it. Apparently the gray adds to that image. I cannot say enough how creeped out I am by that word when strangers call me it."
He pointed to the latte, "that's because you didn't me a latte. I think there's some kind of magic spell in here."

Jesse scrunched up his face, "oh man, I get that. It really creeps me out, though it's never been directed at me. Thankfully."
He looked at the latte and laughed, "Just some sweetener. So I mean, if you call espresso, milk, and vanilla - which is a flavor that compliments the coffee when brewed as espresso, by the way - a magic spell, then sure, I put a magic spell in the drink." He said. He froze for a moment and let out a small groan, burying his face in his hands, "I'm sorry, coffee facts just kind of... tumble out of my mouth when I least expect them to." He rolled his eyes, "I guess it just adds to my terrible flirting..?"

"I mean I do consider all those things to be magic, the espresso in particular," Adriel said, crinkling his nose at how cute Jesse was being.
"Yeah, I don't know why girls in their late teens and early twenties in particular seem to like to use that word. I usually just tell them I'm old enough to actually be their father and it usually stops that behavior. I'm 41, by the way. I don't know if that's an issue or not..." he began to trail off as he lost confidence again. He took another sip of coffee to restore it.

Jesse gave Adriel a crooked smile at the coffee comment, glad the other man didn't seem to mind. "Espresso is definitely magic." He agreed.
He thought a moment before shaking his head. "That's only six years older than me. At this age, that doesn't feel like that big of an age gap. I'm happy to know though, as I was honestly curious but wasn't sure how to bring it up in our conversation without totally changing the subject."

"The gray makes me look older but not, I think I've finally aged into it. I think I've looked about 40 since I was 30," Adriel smiled. "Did you want to ask me anything else? Here's the opening to take this conversation in whatever direction you want."

"Um... I do... but it's not really my place... yet?... to ask." Jesse said honestly, squeaking at the 'yet.' He cleared his throat and scratched mindlessly at the notebook paper. "So I'll make a deal instead, if you answer, I'll answer the same question in return. But don't feel obligated to... answer... I'm just curious to know. Anyway um... What happened between you and Rochelle's mom?" He asked it hesitantly, as he knew they had met maybe thirty minutes ago and that wasn't something you asked someone who had been a stranger when they woke up this morning, but they'd also already asked each other on a date and technically exchanged a marriage proposal, even though it was only jokingly.(?)

Adriel was curious as to what question Jesse was going to ask and was almost relieved when he did ask. "I most definitely was expecting a different question." He looked around to assure that they were in relative privacy. "We divorced for a lot of reasons, ranging from emotional manipulation and abuse, lying and stopping birth control and sabotaging condoms so we had a child which," he gestured to the notepad, "I had been clear to her when we got married that I didn't ever want children. But mainly because she decided that Rochelle got too much attention and she didn't get enough herself, so she abandoned our daughter at a park the next town over. I was freaking out, hence the freaking out today when she went missing, and I divorced her almost immediately after."
He cleared his throat, realizing he probably just gave way too much information, but he couldn't bring himself to quit while he was ahead. "To be honest, that was just over a year ago that she did that, so it's all rather, fresh."

Jesse nodded, biting his lip. "That is awful, it sucks that happened to you." He paused a moment before following up on his deal. "For me, Rhys' mom and I never actually got married. Something always prevented it from happening, and she insisted on a huge, extravagant wedding. When she became pregnant, I tried to get her to just get married on paper and we could have the ceremony later, but she didn't want that. In retrospect, I'm glad because it would have been another layer of lawyers and court dates, but back then I just mildly frustrated by it. After he was born, she ended up with severe post-partum depression, and I ended up having to quit my job because I had to take care of my newborn son and my fiancee. Even though my parents tried to help us by paying rent, eventually we got evicted, and she insisted she get our son during the week and I'd get him over the weekend..." He paused, shaking his head. "The very first weekend I got him, I noticed he had bruises and was malnourished, so I didn't give him back. And took her to court." He paused, "Though my break up happened a few years back now, though everything was settled just in 2018." He explained.
He tilted his head, "What did you think I was going to ask?"

"Good to know we're both fantastic fathers who will do anything for our kids," Adriel said with a smile. He wasn't a fan of sharing his story, especially since it was still fresh but he was happy to have it out of the way. It would have been something on his mind the whole time they started getting to know each other. This way they'd both been open and honest and neither of them had run.
"What I thought you were going to ask... nothing," he was too embarrassed to admit that he thought the question, based on how it was prefaced, would be sexual in nature.

Jesse nodded in agreement. "We seem to have similar disciplining methods, too." He noted, recalling how he had handled the earlier scenario. He laughed softly and ran a hand through his hair. "Honestly, when my ex told me she was pregnant, I read... way too many parenting books and sites. And I guess some of them were on to something cause Ah-zi is a good kid, besides thinking it's a good idea to bring a friend to his dad's cafe without telling her dad..."
He scrunched up his face, trying to figure out what Adriel thought he was going to ask. "What..." He began, before a realization hit him. Oh, he probably thought I was going to ask if he'd ever been with a guy? He felt his face heat up at the thought, but even if he hadn't it wasn't like Jesse could hold it against him - he had never been in a relationship with a man, either. Instead of staying embarrassed, he decided to joke about it. "Did you think I was going to ask about your sex life? Cause if you're not a virgin it's a no-go." He said, giving him a playful smirk so he got it was a joke, on the off chance his tone wasn't as teasing as he hoped he'd made it.

"I am sad to say I was less than thrilled when my ex told me she was pregnant, but I've since changed my tune," Adriel said. "I'm surprised that through all the research you found something good. I feel like there's so much 'trendy' parenting happening these days which has lead to some disastrous results, so I commend you on finding good sources."
Adriel took another sip of his latte and proceeded to choke on it when Jesse mentioned sex life. He sputtered for a few seconds before being able to talk again, "I hate to break it to you, but not a virgin," he said with a smile. "But, uh, yeah, something along those lines is what I thought you were going to ask." He actually had been thinking Jesse was going to be asking about positions but experience was equally as embarrassing.

"I definitely had to wade through some questionable advice before finding some that seemed to... make sense. And had sources to back up their reasoning. There is definitely a lot of 'trendy' parenting happening and it ranges from 'this YouTube video told me this Absolutely Does Not scar a child' to 'I read all the books by this famous child psychologist who has successfully done x,y, and z, and this is why this technique works,' so like, I guess as long as you know how to do your research, some of those resources are actually helpful." Jesse rambled.
He gasped, making it extra dramatic so it was obvious it was still a joke, "Damn. I guess we're over then." He said, waving a hand as if to dismiss Adriel. He paused a moment before smiling. "Even if I did seriously ask about it, those kinds of questions won't be coming out of my mouth at least until we've had one successful date."

Adriel smiled and raised his latte in a toast, "to, at the very least, one successful date then." He pointed in the direction the kids went, "can we go check on them? Rochelle's too quiet to not be up to something. Oh, and is there something you'd rather I call Rhys?"

Jesse shyly raised his coffee cup and gently clinked it against Adriel's glass. "To one successful date."
He smiled at Adriel's question and nodded. "Maybe they're talking about how they'll split up their toys once they become siblings." He said, only half-joking. It was definitely something Rhys would do, and it seemed like Rochelle would be like that, too. Still, he nodded and slid off the bar stool. "But yes, we should go check on them." He thought a moment on the other man's last question. "Mm... well... I tend to default to calling him Ah-zi, but he's called Rhys at school, and to my understanding, sometimes Hayako. The kid has one legal first name but technically has like four names, because I'm half Korean and Chinese, and his mom is Japanese, and so he has a name for all four languages he can speak. Uh... So I guess... if you want to?" He winced, "That was a lot more complicated of an answer than you probably expected... Sorry..."
