Adriel sat at the bar, next to the kids. He was tall enough that even sitting, he kind of loomed over the bar area, so he made sure to sit up straight to stay out of Jesse's personal space. "Rochelle and I just moved here not too long ago, so I'm still not very familiar with Cedar Beach."
"Invite him to our house, that way Rhys and I can play." Rochelle suggested.
"I see, this had less to do with me getting back on the horse and more to do with you wanting an older brother?" he asked with a laugh. He took another sip of his coffee and closed his eyes, enjoying the flavor. He had almost meant the marry him comment, and every additional sip solidified that, though now that they were going to go on a date it wasn't nearly as appropriate.
"How do you feel about ice skating?" he asked Jesse and the kids. He would normally be worried about making a fool out of himself, but considering he'd been wearing whipped cream a few minutes ago, it didn't seem important to try and maintain an image.

"Oh really?" Jesse asked, looking to Rhys. "Actually, I just moved here last year myself. From Nevada. So uh... I have no clue how I feel about ice skating." He said honestly, letting out a small laugh.
"My class went on a field trip to an ice skating rink! It was a lot of fun!" Rhys quipped.
"It seems like our kids would be better at it than us, perhaps? Unless you're secretly a pro ice skater...?" He joked, looking Adriel up and down. Mistake. He's still hot. He thought, feeling as if his brain short-circuited. He returned his attention to his own drink and the notebook, feeling like he'd been trying to answer the questions in the notebook all day. Finally, after contemplating it the entire day, he put a check mark next to the 'new hire' question. If he was actually going to be playing the dating game again, he'd need more time to be away from the cafe. He trusted his current employees to keep the place standing and not on fire, but they could use more help, especially as the cafe got more popular. Perhaps two new hires.
The door chimed as some customers came in, and his coworker, who had made themself sparse while this whole thing happened, to which they gave him a wink before helping the customers and he just glared back. Between his son and his coworkers, he was not going to live this down.

Adriel laughed, "yes, I have a secret career as a figure skater, can't you tell by my lithe form?" Once he stopped laughing he said, "oh no, I'm gonna fall a lot and probably make a fool of myself. But I figure we should start off on an honest note."
He looked to their kids, "I've never actually dated since I've been a dad," he furrowed his eyebrows, surprised by that fact, then surprised that he was surprised by that fact, because naturally, if he'd been married, he wasn't dating. "It feels like a different thing." He realized he wasn't making any sense.
"Sorry, I guess I mean when I was younger and dating you put on the show, right? Trying to be the ideal. Mysterious, charming and all that, but I'm kind of a-"
"Doofus? Dork?" Rochelle chimed in unhelpfully.
Adriel chuckled and pointed to her with his thumb, "what she said."

Jesse laughed along with Adriel's joke, motioning at the other man with the pen. "Oh yes, I could tell." He continued joking, his voice still bright with laughter.
Jesse looked at Rhys and then down at the counter. "I haven't either... Had a bad falling out with his mom." He said, motioning generically to Rhys.
He returned his attention to the man and nodded, "Yeah, I know what you mean. It's kind of refreshing to just... I don't know, be myself, I guess."
"My dad's also a dork." Rhys whispered to Rochelle loudly.
"Thanks." Jesse said monotonously.

Adriel was glad Jesse seemed to be loosening up. "Rochelle's mom and I are divorced and it wasn't particularly amicable either." He placed a hand on Rochelle's head and pet her hair a few times.
"Yes, please do be yourself. According to our kids, we're a pair or dorks so we should hopefully get along. What's the norm again? Liking long walks on the beach and stuff? More like I watch a bunch of animated films because of this one and I cry just about as often as she does during those movies," he said with a grin.
"So are you okay with ice skating?" Adriel asked. He was actually glad Jesse was also a single father because it made dating easier. It's not the Adriel wouldn't get a babysitter for Rochelle but she was his entire life, so her approval mattered and he wanted her to get to know any potential future partner he had.

"I suppose that can be stories to share for another time." Jesse said softly. He was already nervous about that thought - besides his parents, who were involved with the process, he hadn't really told anyone the whole story of his breakup with Rhys' mom, and that thought made him nervous in a weird way.
Jesse chuckled lightly at the comment and muttered quietly, "Well, I also like the beach and hiking..." He added, a bit louder, "but I also watch animated movies but uh... I don't cry at the sad parts, only the really happy ones. I think I'm broken."
He nodded, "ice skating sounds great."

"I just said I cry, that doesn't mean just at the sad parts. Something about watching those movies as a father hits different, you know?" Adriel said, a smile on his face.
"You like beaches and hiking, I like woodworking, though I live in an apartment, so no woodworking for me since we moved here." He said, taking another sip of his latte. "You know I'm gonna be here all the time now. You shouldn't have spoiled me with coffee."
"How does Friday night sound, for ice skating?" he asked.

Jesse chuckled and nodded, "Indeed they do." He agreed.
He blinked, in a bit of shock and disbelief. "Wait... I also like woodworking!" He patted the counter. "This was my design. But... Like you, I'm living in an apartment so all the tools are just packed in storage."
He put a hand up to his face, making an exaggerated worried look, "oh no, how awful, another regular customer..." He bit his lip, hesitating before adding, "and a good-looking one at that."
He burst into a fit of laughter and added, "Friday night sounds great."

"You do? I thought this counter had some character! You made it yourself?" Adriel asked, excited and running his hand along the counter.
Rochelle rolled her eyes, "I didn't know they'd be this dorky.." she said to Rhys.
"Enough, young lady," Adriel said, not raising his voice but making it clear he was serious. "I'm your father, and within the family, you can tease, yes, but with how often you're saying it and no one correcting you, you're moving towards bullying. How would you like it if someone kept calling you a name?"
Rochelle took a sip of her hot chocolate to try to avoid answering. She said to Rhys instead, "having a dad to teaches kindergarten makes him really hard to argue with." Adriel cleared his throat, indicating he was still waiting for a response, "I understand, daddy. I'm sorry, I won't call you names anymore."
"Thank you, button," he said, patting her head again.

"Alas, no. I tried to make the contractor let me build it, but there was something about safety protocol and they have to pay me? Blah blah blah... but I did make the design on my own, and chose everything that went into making it. The contractor basically just put the things together and installed it here."
"My dad doesn't teach and he does the same thing!" Rhys complained in his loud whisper.
Jesse gave him a stern look, as if warning his son to not even start, and Rhys grumbled something under his breath and returned to sipping his drink.
Jesse smiled, muttering in a lightly teasing tone, "button?"

"He calls me everything, he can't pick a nickname," Rochelle explained.
Adriel chuckled and ran a hand through his hair, "she's right this time. I call her everything, I've even called her 'kitchen sink' once."
"I was very confused," Rochelle stated.
"We should see if there's a place we can take a woodworking class or something. It'd be fun," Adriel said, realizing he might be coming on too strong. A class meant some extended period of time, and who knows when the class would start, so his statement kind of assumed that they'd be dating or still seeing each other for that duration.

"My dad also calls me everything but my name." Rhys said with a knowing nod.
"I do too call you by your name." Jesse protested. "Zaozi and Maerin are just as much your names as Rhys or Hayako."
"When roll call happened I didn't even know they were calling my name until the last name." Rhys replied.
"Okay, drop it." Jesse told his son, making a motion like a mouth closing. He wrote something in his notebook and tilted it so only Adriel could see it. Honestly I hate his name, but his mom was insistent on it. He scribbled it out once he was sure Adriel had had time to read it all.
He smiled to Adriel, pretending like he hadn't just passed a secret message to the other man and nodded, "that sounds like it could be fun." There was something unspoken there, but he didn't even want to think about if this didn't work out. He liked Adriel already, and him having a kid made it a lot easier on him, for there was someone else who understood when he had to drop everything for Rhys, and wouldn't get jealous or annoyed about it.

Adriel smiled at the note and watched Jesse scratch it out. He gingerly took the pen from his hand, making sure not to linger, even though he wanted to, and slid the notebook over to himself, writing his own note, I never wanted children, but that little girl is my life. He waited for Jesse to read it before scratching it out throughly.
"They're passing love notes to each other," Rochelle whispered loudly to Rhys in a teasing tone.
"Don't you two have homework or something?" he asked them.
Rochelle stuck her tongue out at him, "see what you get with a dad who's a teacher?"
"So why do you want him to be my dad too?" Rhys asked.

Jesse nodded, a little shellshocked at their hands touching again, but getting his brain back to processing by the time Adriel showed him the note. His face softened after he read it, looking him in the eyes and giving him a nod. He really hoped he got over bluescreening every time they touched hands quickly because it would make dating a lot harder. Perhaps he missed the touch, or it was because Adriel was so damn attractive, he didn't know, but needed it to stop tso he could continue functioning properly.
He shook his head at the kid's comments, clicking his tongue at his son, "I would've told you to do homework anyway. Teacher or not, that's still the rules. Why not show her the break room?" He suggested to his son.
Rhys seemed to think about that for a moment before grinning wildly and jumping off the stool, taking his drink in one hand and gently pulling at Rochelle's hand with the other. "C'mon, it's really cool."

Adriel watched the kids head off towards the break room then returned his attention to Jesse. "Sorry, don't mind my staring, you're just very attractive. I'm excited to find not only a coffee shop but a date at said coffee shop." He felt awkward. "Sorry, I haven't flirted in a very long time.."
He drank more of his latte, "though I'm pretty sure this latte is a form or flirtation right here, so you're all set on the flirtation front."
