Adriel followed Jesse, now that they were standing next to each other he realized how much he really did tower over the other man. Out of habit, he dropped back a little further when following him to try and reduce the amount of looming and intimidation he might be doing. "How about I ask him what he wants me to call him?"

Jesse glanced back curiously as Adriel seemed to step back a bit, but doing so made him realize how much taller the other man was compared to him. He'd never felt particularly short, and he knew it was just because Adriel was tall, but still his mind told him he was tiny in comparison. Stealing his sweaters will be fun... His mind piped up unhelpfully, causing him to blush, and he tried to hide his face from the other man's view. "What?" He squeaked when he realized Adriel spoke, then added, more calmly, "That works too."

"Sorry, I know I'm large and intimidating so I try to lessen that..." Adriel said as he gestured to the distance between them. He leaned against the door frame as the reached the break room. Rochelle and Rhys were sitting together doing homework, pointing things out and explaining them to each other.
He couldn't help but smile. Seeing Rochelle happy always made him happy, but seeing that he could send her off with a friend and have an adult conversation while she was gone and her still be on task made him a proud father. He looked to Jesse and gave him a warm smile before clearing his throat to let the kids know they'd arrived. "How goes the homework?" he asked.
Rochelle looked up and gave a thumbs up.
"Rhys? Would you rather I call you Rhys or some other name?" he asked, following through on his earlier promise to Jesse.

"I mean, large yes, intimidating not really..." Jesse muttered. He broke out into a smile as their kids came into view, returning the warm smile before looking at the kids.
Rhys looked up from his homework and thought a moment before shrugging. "Hayako is fine, but so is Rhys, or Zaozi... Or Maerin." He responded simply, shrugging again before returning to his textbook, asking Rochelle what answer she got for one of the questions.
Jesse motioned to his son before shrugging at Adriel. "I see he's not helpful, either. If you're most comfortable just calling him Rhys, don't not do it for my sake." He said, lowering his voice at the latter sentence.

"I work hard to not being intimidating. I think Rochelle dunking my face in whipped cream early on may have helped," Adriel grinned.
"Thanks, Hayako. Since you said that one first, I'll go with that," he turned to Jesse, "like father like son," he laughed.

Jesse chuckled, "maybe..."
Rhys gave Adriel a thumbs up to let the man know he'd heard him, but continued working on his homework.
Jesse raised an eyebrow and let out a sigh. "It's not usually hard to get him to do his homework, but it is hard to get him to focus on it this well... I think he's trying to show off for Rochelle." He smiled. "Since they're so oddly well-behaved, shall we return to our coffee? Ah... Did you need a new one? I didn't look to see if you were out or not before we left..."

Adriel nodded and followed Jesse back to the bar, "I was trying to savor it, but I will definitely accept a new cup."
"Oh! Thank god! Boss man needs to get laid, maybe it'll help him relax," one of Jesse's staff said. Not the one who'd been out here for their entire interaction, this one must have been in the back on break and had just come out. Apparently, their flirting was so awkward and obvious that this person figured it out in less than two seconds.
Adriel finished his latte and didn't say anything, not because he didn't want to, but because this person was a member of Jesse's staff and he didn't want to overstep.

Jesse felt his face turn bright red and he huffed and fanned his face as if that would help the color to dissipate, and looked to the worker who had made the comment. "Excuse me, Scarlet, come here." He said, motioning for her to come over with one finger.
Scarlet immediately looked guilty as she shuffled over. "Yes boss?"
"Those kinds of comments are inappropriate at work, let alone when using them to talk about your manager. I would appreciate if you refrained from saying them in the future."
"Sorry, boss." Scarlet said, looking to the ground. "Am I in trouble?" She asked quietly, a pout on her face.
"I hear of another comment like that coming from your mouth, in regards to anyone, you will get a write up." Jesse told her. "Now go." He added gently, shooing her away with his hand.
After she left the two of them alone again, Jesse sighed and ran his hands through his hair as he let out a sigh, keeping his face hidden for a moment before looking to Adriel. "I'm sorry about her. She's very outspoken and I try not to discourage that, especially since she's one of the best at making customer connections, but sometimes she goes too far."

Adriel stared into his empty cup while Jesse dealt with Scarlet and when the other staff member came and offered him another drink he politely declined. "Awkward flirting means I'd like to try and get Jesse to make me another cup." The staffer grinned and agreed, returning to help others.
"Kids get excited and say what's on their mind. I'm glad to hear you normally encourage it and reel it in when necessary. You could be a teacher," he said with a smile. He gingerly held up his cup, "mind making me another cup of magic?"

Jesse smiled. "You really think so?" He thought about it for a moment before shaking his head. "Nah, I'm not cut out for college, and that would require attending it in order to get my license."
He slid off the bar stool and went back around the counter with a "sure!" He took Adriel's cup and cleaned it quickly before setting near the espresso machine on the bar. He thought for a bit, looking at his available syrups, and decided to go for a peach mocha, but light on the syrups, and with an extra shot of espresso. He designed a heart with the milk and added some pearly, round sprinkles to sit on top of the foam around the heart, and then finished it off with a drizzle of chocolate within the heart. He looked to Adriel, blush tinting his cheeks, and said shyly, "Let me know how you like that..."
He then went about making himself a drink, going for the same drink he made for Adriel, but much less dressed up. He set it on the counter in front of his seat and cleaned up before returning to his seat.

Adriel watched Jesse as he made his drink, fascinated. "You really like coffee, don't you?" he said. He found himself leaning his head on his hand and watching the other many like a sap. He accepted his drink and took a tentative sip. "Mm! I had my reservations when I saw you add the peach but it's really good!"
He waited for Jesse to finish making his own drink and settled into his seat before asking, "so what is it about coffee? Why did you want to open a coffee shop?"

Jesse smiled and nodded at the question and got situated back on the bar stool. "Ah, I'm glad you like it then." He said, realizing he should have asked if there was any flavors Adriel didn't like. He lucked out this time, but next time he'd have to make sure to ask before getting too creative.
He took a long sip of his own drink, thinking about his answer. "A few years back, I got a job as a barista at a local coffee shop. I like coffee prior to that, but it was all "just coffee." I thought the dollar store brand was the same as the stuff in classy pompous coffee shops... But then my manager at that store walked me through all the information and opened my eyes to it. I loved working at that coffee shop, and wanted to recreate that feeling. But... I didn't want to live in Nevada forever, and recalled visiting Washington and loving it, so I chose to open a coffee shop here. I feel very honored, as my manager came to help me out when I was first opening up. She could only stay for three weeks, as she had her own cafe to care for, but she really did that for me, and made sure I could succeed." He laughed sheepishly, "Sorry, I ended up ranting. Basically it's all her fault, but I don't mind."

Adriel listened and nodded along as he followed the story, "I'm glad you found something you enjoyed." He thought about how to phrase his next question, "did you have a career path you were originally going towards when you found coffee?" He realized the question didn't sound the best, "sorry, I didn't mean that in any sort of way. Please don't be offended, I realized how that sounded after I said it."

Jesse smiled softly and shook his head. "I'm not offended. I honestly didn't have a career path in mind. I had gotten through one semester of college and decided it wasn't for me - not in a dramatic way, I didn't flunk out or anything, and who knows, maybe it was the school I chose - but I knew that limited my options. I was still trying to figure it out when I started at the coffee shop, and at first it was just a job. I got the first one I could so it would look better to the courts when the custody battle started. But the longer I stayed there, the more I fell in love, so I'm glad it happened. I think I was debating a career that had apprenticeship programs, but all the ones I knew about were not things I was passionate about, or even enjoyed for that matter." He explained.

"I get it, I used to hate school. I don't think it's really for anyone." Adriel said. "I think there are people who the system is better set up for, but I wasn't the biggest fan of school." He took another sip of his mocha, "which might make it weird that I'm a kindergarten teacher," he said with a big grin.
"My goal, I suppose, is to help kids like school. I had one teacher the turned it around for me, and I want to be that for someone." He took another sip of coffee and watched Jesse over the rim of the cup.
