Samnang glanced at his phone again like if he kept looking at it, Jiuk's answer would change. They'd been busy lately, so they hadn't been able to meet up as often, and it kind of bummed Sam out. However, this time as he glanced at the message, he realized that if Jiuk was going out on a date that afternoon, that meant Hwangjung would be busy (unless there was something Jiuk wasn't telling him). He couldn't even remember the last time he had seen Sungyong; probably on the last day Sungyong was at Starbucks. He felt bad; that had been a long time ago now. He sent out a message to Sungyong, who unless was working he figured would not have plans since his main friend was also going to busy. 'Hey, it's been forever! How've you been? Are you free to hang out and catch up? -Sam (:' He pressed send and then continued scrolling through Tumblr as he waited on a reply. He had just gotten off his shift, but didn't really feel like going home quite ye,t so he was practically lounging on one of the couches just outside the store. One of his coworkers had already told him he'd freeze if he stayed outside, but the sun was warm and now he was comfy. Tags: Sungyong Han

Sungyong was in the staff room by the rink at work getting himself ready to leave when his phone buzzed. He was a little bit surprised. Hwannie had a date that night, and Jin-ge was doing something with Theo. He glanced at it to see a message from Samnang. It had been a while since they'd seen each other, except in passing in their respective best friend's orbits. He wondered if Samnang was also left without his usual go to person by him being on a date.
That being said, Sungyong had not spoken to anyone over the age of twelve who wasn't a parent to one of his students since breakfast since Liz was away at a training camp. And even over breakfast, it had been a quick exchange with Yunjin mostly about if tea was already made and what groceries they needed.
He replied to Samnang, "Sure. It's been a while, and I was at a loss of what to do tonight anyhow. Where/when do you want to meet up? - Sungyong"
He smiled a little bit, stretching as he stood and waited to get a reply before he headed out.

Samnang smiled as he got a reply pretty quickly. He tried to think of a place to go that would be nearby but also not actually Starbucks. "You in the mood for going to the Chinese Bakery, getting some pastries and tea?" He suggested, returning his attention to Tumblr, but mentally preparing himself to start getting up and moving.

Sungyong smiled when he saw Samnang's suggestion and quickly replied, "Sounds good. I'm just leaving work and it's basically across the street, so I'll be there in about five minutes and will just hang out until you get there. Pet the cats."
He gathered his things and waved to his coworkers on the way out. Liz had already headed home to do her homework, so he didn't need to check on how she was doing on his way out.
It didn't take him long to cross the street and get himself a pot of tea and a pastry at the Chinese bakery across the street. He figured he would wait to get more pastries until after Samnang made it there in case they decided to get dinner somewhere else.
His lap was pretty promptly claimed by one of the shop cats as he waited for Samnang's arrival, intermittently checking his phone.

With the confirmation of wanting to meet up, Samnang finally got himself, throwing away his last cup of coffee and heading towards the bakery. He shot a final text saying simply, 'sounds good - it'll take me a bit longer but I should be there in less than 15 minutes.'
He began his trek to the bakery, having left his car with Nicky after his older brother's car decided to die on him. He had debated skateboarding to work, but there wasn't really a lot of space in the back room for him to keep it, besides right in front of the lockers, which coworkers actually used on occasion, so he decided to just walk home after Nicky so kindly offered him a ride to work in return for letting him borrow the car. Of course, he forgot his headphones so he was kind of bummed to not have anything to listen to, but he could enjoy nature and the sun he supposed.
He got to the bakery after about ten minutes, waving to Sungyong and giving the lady behind the counter a bow. He noticed Sungyong had tea and a pastry already, so he ordered the same amount of things and then went to sit down on the other side of the table from Sungyong, giving his friend a grin. "How have you been?" He asked.

Sungyong smiled at Samnang, glad to have company. He waved back at Samnang, waiting patiently for the other man to make it over to him with his own pastries and tea.
When Samnang sat down, Sungyong smiled again at his greeting and replied, "Hi, it's good to see you. I've been busy, though it feels so has everyone. It's weird with Hwannie and Jiuk moving into their own place, but this season is my first student's first year of senior skating competition, so I've not had enough time to think for the most part honestly."
He smiled at his friend and said, "How about you? How have things been? You holding up OK with Hwannie and Jiuk's nesting?"

"Wow, that's awesome!" Samnang replied breathlessly, then adding, "You must feel very proud - though I'd imagine also stressed - to be their coach!"
He shifted and tried to think about how he was 'holding up.' He debated for a moment just saying something simple, like 'fine' or 'it's okay,' but decided against it. After all, this was someone who really knew what he was going through. "I mean, I guess. It's just been kind of weird, I think. Not that I'm not happy for him, but ever since we met it was always us against the world. Hwangjung's a great guy, though, and I know Jiuk's happy, I just... miss him a lot more than I expected. I guess." He spoke honestly. He played with the tea cup, studying it carefully. He let out a somewhat bitter laugh, "It sounds kind of sappy to admit that out loud..."

Sungyong smiled and said, "Yeah, I'm really proud of Liz. She's now officially gotten farther in her skating career than I ever did in mine."
Sungyong nodded along to Sam's explanation and said, "I get it, I absolutely get it. I've got Hwannie moved out, even if it's just to next door, and that's weird because I do see him less, and then Yunjin's boyfriend moved in when Hwannie moved out, and there's Tai going abroad. Basically just a lot, one after another. Even being happy for them, sometimes if feels like I'm missing out on an important life step or something. Also like I did things out of order with helping to raise a kid before any of them were in their long term relationships."
He knew he was babbling a little bit, but if someone would get it, it would be Samnang.

"That must be... pretty bittersweet." Samnang mused, frowning slightly.
He nodded, "Yeah, I can only imagine it was rougher on you than me. I mean, I'm a little jealous Jiuk has his own now, because we always said we'd be the one to buy a house together, but I'm not upset that it didn't pan out that way. It's just... my oldest brother only just finally moved out, and it seems like the others are planning to stay for the long haul." He sighed, staring mindlessly at the table and letting a short laugh escape, "I'm so ready to have my own place. I mean, I'll be 25 next year, and I still share a room with my older brother! That needs to change." He sighed and cupped his chin in his hands. "Alas, housing is too expensive for a simple barista, even if I'm assistant manager..." He intended for his words to sound more playful than they probably did, but had a feeling it didn't quite come across that way.

Sungyong thought about it and eventually replied, "It's a little bittersweet, but Liz definitely makes me proud. I'm just glad that she didn't face a career ending injury still in juniors. It's been interesting with getting her set up skating for Mongolia too. It's been very fulfilling though, I like coaching, though sometimes, after I've had three little kids classes in a row, I need to be reminded of that."
Sungyong sighed and said, "I get that. I feel fortunate in a way that Yunjin and I bought the house with Hwangjung helping before either of them was in a long term relationship. Jin-ge and I are the ones who own it, so his boyfriend and his boyfriend's little brother are technically tenants right now, though like, not in an emotional sense. Hwannie always planned to move out eventually, get married someday, have his own place, though close to us, so in the grand scheme of things, I'm really happy he ended up literally next door. It's definitely weird though, especially because it feels like Tai suddenly grew up really fast. When it comes to home, I'm really glad that we already had downstairs sort of set up as Hwannie's separate space because I moved down there and have personal space."
He tried to smile reassuringly and said, "If a house is eventually something that you want, or like a condo, or your own place of some sort, I'm sure that you'll be able to figure something out, even if it's not obvious right now."
Sungyong definitely felt like he'd been doing things backwards though, almost more with the discussion with Samnang. He added, trying to move the tone a little, "We should try to meet up more regularly."

Samnang chuckled, "I could only imagine. I don't necessarily hate kids, but I know I don't want any of my own. If Hwangjung and Jiuk ever adopt, I'll happily be the weird uncle though." He paused, "I suppose at least with coaching you can still give the kids back at the end of the session." He knew he should comment on Tai moving out, but didn't know what to say. "I'd imagine it was rough to have Tai move out so young, though." He finally muttered.
"Ohh, that's nice." Samnang said, then paused a moment while thinking, "I guess I never really thought about it. I suppose a condo would be fine, and it would even possibly be obtainable on my current salary. In general, I'm just tired of living with all my siblings. No offense to them - well, some of them."
Finally, he smiled and nodded enthusiastically. "I agree. When I realize I hadn't really talked to you outside of generic greetings when visiting out friends, I felt bad. I'm usually better at keeping in touch with friends. But I guess becoming assistant manager and school made me busier than I realized."

Sungyong chuckled and said, "It's definitely not all you. I can be a bit of a hermit at times, and already live with one of my best friends and next door to the other. Even with Hwangjung and Jiuk nesting, sometimes by the time I add up time spent with Jin-ge and time spent with Hwannie and incidentally Jiuk if it's at their place, I'm running out of energy or motivation to be social."
He sighed thinking about the comment about Tai and said, "I was in many ways Tai's primary parent even though Jin-ge was his official guardian, so yes, definitely really weird. I still talk to him all the time, video calls and messaging and all that, but it's definitely different. He's chasing his dreams and doing really well at it, so I can't hate the situation, but I miss him. I did actually think about figuring out how to go with him to Korea at least for a few years, act as his guardian there, but Thomas was already there and offering to take on that role, and I wasn't at a good point in my own coaching career to up and move, and it would have felt really irresponsible towards Liz while she's still in high school."
He focused on nibbling on a pastry and drinking some more of his tea for a little bit, feeling like he suddenly wasn't quite sure what to say. He'd not made many friends in his life ever, and while Samnang was a friend he'd made all of his own accord, he'd clearly not been doing a great job at keeping that up. He asked, "What sorts of things do you generally go out and do with friends?"
He'd initially been thinking of the question as something for Samnang specifically, but he felt like in a way, he'd just asked a strangely existential question that he didn't know the generic answer to. He hoped maybe Samnang had an answer for him.

Samnang raised an eyebrow, "Unless Jiuk has changed significantly, I can bet it wears him out too to hang out with both of you."
He nodded, "I can't imagine what that must be like, but I do know video calls and messaging apps and social media just aren't the same as getting to talk to someone face-to-face, so I can relate and sympathize in that sense." He rambled.
He thought a moment, "Uh... eat, drink coffee, or, uh-" he held up his tea cup and gave Sungyong a smile, "tea, chat and catch up - check that box," he joked softly, motioning making a check mark on some invisible list, "and then uhh... eat some more?"

Sungyong sighed and said, "Yeah, video chat and messaging isn't really the same. There's a competition in Seoul that Liz is going to be going to this coming season, so that will be a chance for me to visit Tai too, and I'm looking forward to it a lot."
He had slight mixed feelings about it though, if he was being honest with himself. It had been so long since he'd visited Seoul, and it had been a family visit the last time, and it had been horribly awkward and uncomfortable. Hwangjung reassured him regularly that visiting as an adult with his own plans was way better, but Sungyong knew that he wouldn't entirely believe that until he got to actually do it.
Sungyong chuckled at Samnang's checklist and said, "So food and caffeine are the keys to friendship? I guess we're doing OK right now then."
He felt like he didn't quite know what to do next with this whole conversation though. Sungyong was definitely out of practice, if he'd ever even been in practice, at this whole friend hangouts thing with someone he hadn't known since before he was six.

"Oh that's awesome!" Samnang said excitedly. He wanted to visit Korea some day, but he also began getting more curious about Cambodia, especially after learning Devi had visited there with relative frequency.
He laughed at Sungyong's joke and nodded. "Yeah, I guess we are." He agreed. He drank some tea to create a natural pause in conversation, trying to think of what to talk about next. They'd unloaded on each other as soon as they met up - which was fine, Samnang was glad to have someone to commiserate with, but now it meant their conversation had stopped and it was somewhat awkward. "Oh, y'know, speaking of Korea, I studied Korean in school somewhat recently with Jiuk. It was a lot of fun!"
