Appearance
Face Claim: Nappanut Guntachai (Buon)
Samnang grew to a height of 5'10" (177 cm) at the young age of 13, and he finally grew into his originally awkward height by the time he was 18. He's a healthy weight of 145 lbs (65 kg). His skin is naturally a bit tanned, displaying how often he goes outside. His hair is naturally black, but he likes to keep it blonde, or occasionally, a more absurd color like pink or an equivalent. He keeps it short, but not too short it can't be styled more than one way. His eyes are a dark brown, and when he smiles, it seems like his eyes are smiling too. He'll occasionally humor colored contacts, but he mostly uses them for cosplays. His build is a mixture of muscular and effeminate. He has his ears pierced once in the lobes, and then more recently he's gotten a couple more lobe piercings, and in January of 2019, got his first tattoo, going for a Traditional Cambodian tattoo, called Sak Yon on his chest.
Samnang's voice is at a tenor range, with the occasional playful baritone to alto when he's goofing off (or back when his voice was changing).
At the end of June of 2016, he got a double mastectomy, also known as top surgery. He was somewhat down and out in recovery mode for most of July, but by August he was back in full force. He was happy to be binder-less for the remainder of the summer. He also now has small scars from a laparoscopic hysterectomy, a surgery he received in March of 2018, and he received a vaginectomy in May 2023.
Personality
Samnang is usually patient about explaining gender dysphoria if it's brought up, as long as a person is nice about it, or doesn't ask extremely stupid questions (He'll will just leave the situation at hostility). However, 99% of the time, he's unwilling to disclose the fact he's trans, unless he feels it's absolutely necessary, or at least until he knows the other person's stance on transgender issues.
His likes include anime, eating, being with friends, cosplaying, coffee and sweet beverages, listening to slam poetry, meeting up/forcing into cosplay/drinking coffee with Jiuk, and skateboarding. Although he was learning it back when he was still in school, his obsession with his violin waned within the last few years, and now he doesn't play anymore.
His dislikes are that he's happy his grandparents passed on, hateful people, large crowds in small places, most children, bugs, adulting, and how close most of his siblings were to their grandparents compared to him.
His strengths include having a good sense of humor, learning new skills quickly, being quick-witted, smart, kind, calculative, and open-minded.
His weaknesses are he's apprehensive when meeting new people, coming across his birth name unexpectedly, stronger men that aren't his brothers, and puppies.
While his fears are hate crimes, never finding love, finding love, and politics.
Meanwhile, his habits are cleaning his nails, drinking coffee/talking about coffee, eating too quickly, and playing on his phone/looking at his phone.
Family
MOTHER
Name: Dara Hong
Birth Year: 1965

FATHER
Name: Kosal "Corey" Yun
Birth Year: 1965
Occupation: CEO to a company in Seattle
Feelings Toward: They're slightly awkward, but there's still a lot of love for his dad.
MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER
Name: Srey Chan
Birth Year: Died in 2018 at 80

MATERNAL GRANDFATHER
Name: Lo Hong
Birth Year: Died in 2018 at 81
Occupation: N/A
Feelings Toward: Fairly neutral. His grandfather was never as outwardly as transphobic as his grandmother, but he never stood up for Sam, either. He could at least talk civilly with Sam, though.
OLDEST BROTHER
Name: Richard Kosal Yun (Ricky)
Birth Year: 1986
Occupation: Works at his dad's company
Feelings Toward: Sam was always protected by him, but they were never close. He's felt a bit burned by Ricky after Ricky moved out and basically stopped talking to his siblings.
OLDEST SISTER
Name: Kalianne Emily Yun (Kali)
Birth Year: 1988
Occupation: Fashion Designer
Feelings Toward: He feels obligated to love her since they're siblings, but he really has never gotten along with Kali, and she often resorts to using transphobic slurs in those fights, which has led to bitterness and hatred.
OLDER BROTHER
Name: Devi Jonathan Yun
Birth Year: 1990
Occupation: Dancer
Feelings Toward: When Sam learned Devi was like, a real person, and one who protected him from their grandparents as much as he could, Sam has gained a new respect for Devi, and has been curious about properly getting to know his older brother more.
OLDER SISTER
Name: Sophea Elizabeth Yun (Sophie)
Birth Year: 1992
Occupation: Bookstore employee
Feelings Toward: Fairly neutral. She's been taking Kali's side more often than Sam would like. They used to get along well because he and Sophie would nerd out together, but they've drifted apart as they got older. Still, of his sisters, he's closer to her.
OLDER BROTHER
Name: Nicholas Ponleu Yun (Nicky)
Birth Year: 1994
Occupation: Grocery Store Employee
Feelings Toward: He and Nicky used to be best friends. But, something about sharing a room together as they got older began tearing that apart. Once Sam moved in with Devi, his and Nicky's relationship slowly started getting better again.
BEST FRIEND
Name: Jiuk Robertson
Birth Year: 1993
Occupation: LGBTQ+ Center Secretary/Lyricist
Feelings Toward: Once having a crush on him and ruining all of Sams' original ideas about his sexuality, it disappeared just as quickly and he and Jiuk are now just close and good friends. As it started getting used more, Sam was quick to adapt to calling Jiuk by his actual name rather than Z. Jiuk is Sam's longest friend outside of his siblings.
History
Samnang was born Samantha Erica Yun on April 11, 1996 to two Cambodian parents, preceded by three older brothers and two older sisters. He was a healthy baby, but by the time he passed two years old, he began throwing extreme and occasionally violent tantrums. His parents and doctors were puzzled, and it lasted until he was about three years old and could talk in longer sentences, saying he didn't want to wear dresses. He began telling his parents he was a boy. At first his parents just thought it was because he was close to his brothers and he was confused, but they realized they'd have to face the facts as Sam would constantly yell that they weren't buying him the right clothes, the right toys, or calling him by the right gender pronouns (in less eloquent, kid words). They took him to a psychiatrist, who said he might have gender dysphoria, and suggested they try letting him dress and act as a boy. His parents were reluctant at first because they feared social stigmatization, but eventually agreed as Sam's tantrums only kept getting worse. They were amazed and elated to find the tantrums stopped almost completely. After extensive research, they realized if this was what path their child wanted, they should accept it, or face the chance of losing Samnang all together.
In middle school, Samnang got interested in skateboarding, as well as violin. He began taking lessons after school for the violin, and would use the internet to learn skateboarding in his spare time. However, as time went on, his passion for violin faded while his passion for skateboarding grew. With his birth name still on the attendance sheets, he often got picked on and teased, though he was too ready to fight anyone that tried to physically bully him. He began finding solo hobbies to get through middle school, often hiding in a corner somewhere reading or taking photos, or in a classroom teaching himself songwriting. After learning which school in the district his classmates were going for high school, he intentionally went to the opposite school.
At fifteen years old, his parents finally registered Sam as a boy, and legally changed his name to "Samnang," meaning "lucky," as suggested by Samnang himself after saying he was lucky to have such a good, understanding family (mostly). Also around that time, the doctor suggested it would be wise to begin hormone blockers, if that was what Samnang really wanted. Throughout the rest of high school and into his time at community college, Samnang typically kept that he was assigned female at birth a secret in order to protect himself.
In July of 2016 he got a double mastectomy, colloquially known as "top surgery." Then in 2018, he got a total hysterectomy. He's been back and forth on whether or not he wants bottom surgery, but has been looking into it more recently.
He went into community college right out of high school, as he was unsure what he wanted to do in his future. After taking every class he possibly could, he eventually graduated from community college with an AA degree in Public Communications. He's been stalling on going to a proper four year college until he knows exactly what he wants to do, and if it will even require a four year degree. After getting promoted to manager in early 2021, Sam is perfectly fine with his current job.
