On the first full day of the camp, all the trainees were brought to the dance practice room early in the morning. They had been divided into provisional groups based on their audition material, but they were going to be given a quick assessment to put them into one of three groups: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
[the dance studio] Taehoon and the head dance instructor had spent the previous day looking over all the auditions and putting together a tentative set of groupings. But the very first thing that they were going to have students do was run through a basic dance audition piece of their choice to confirm their group placement.
Then, they would introduce the song that all the trainees would be assessed on. It was a Yuseong song that had not previously had choreography that Taehoon and the head dance instructor had choreographed something for to have all the trainees learn. On the 18th, they would be reevaluated on it based on their performance, and re-placed into the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced groups.

Taehoon and the head dance coach arrived shortly before the trainees did, and the two of them set themselves up at a little folding table that had been brought in to set in front of the benches.
The two of them were fairly quiet as they sorted out the stack into their tentative Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced stacks, and discussed the ones that they had considered marginal. He waved and said a quick greeting to Thomas when he arrived right before the trainees were due to start so that he could act as an interpreter as needed, but he stayed mainly focused on his sorting task with the head dance trainer.
Finally, as the trainees started coming in, Taehoon directed them to form three clusters for their initial assessment, not bothering to keep the boys and girls separate for this part, though he did notice them mostly sorting themselves so that there was basically a line dividing the girls and the boys in each category.
Once they had all formed their groups, he had them start doing a quick extra dance assessment using a song of their choice.
[[Mod Note: In your replies to this thread, please describe which initial group your character got sorted into, how their dance assessment went, and what dance group they were confirmed to be in afterwards. Once there are a few replies, I will start the next phase, though you will still be able to reply to both.]]

Taijia was one of the first to make it into the dance training room because he had been fully up and ready and had eaten in the small dining hall with plenty of time to do some of his own warmups in the common area between the boys and girls dorms. When they were sent to the training rooms that they had been showed the location of the evening before once everyone was in, he'd headed straight there.
He was both excited and nervous for this stage of the audition. He didn't really know Taehoon, though they both knew of each other. He smiled tentatively when Taehoon sent him over into the Advanced group right away and with an approving smile.
Once everyone was in the room, Taehoon started doing their reassessment, and Tai offered to go first when he asked for volunteers. He requested Seventeen's "Highlight" since it was a song he had practiced enough that he felt comfortable doing it without specifically practicing it in advance. It also gave him a spot to put in an aerial where the original choreography involved one member jumping over another.
The dance coach clapped approvingly, and Tai was sent back to the cluster of advanced students, after he thanked Taehoon and the head dance coach.

Seojin was impressed at the kid who went first from the Advanced group. He was really good, and she was pretty sure that he was the youngest person in the room. One of the things that she'd heard over and over again in auditions is that if she'd started auditioning a little younger, there were a lot of places that would have taken her, even if she'd not quite had the skill level that she had now. However, she'd been in the US at that age, and she was pretty sure that her parents would have never agreed with her auditioning as a middle school student.
She wanted to get her chance to show off too, and she was the first of the girls from the Advanced group to step forward. She had decided that part of her going all out for this audition was going to be to draw on what had inspired her to want to be an idol in the first place, and she'd picked an F(x) song for her dance performance. She had them cue up, F(x)'s "Lachata" which had been the MV that she'd seen that had gotten her into the idea of being an idol. She'd reworked the choreography to work well for one person, but she'd kept in all of the original parts that had made it iconic to her and made it recognizable. The choreography showed off her flexibility, and her footwork was precise and clean. She always felt good after that particular dance routine, and she also could do it without really practicing first because she'd done it so many times.
She was relieved when both of the judges nodded approvingly and sent her back to the Advanced group. It was a good sign. She watched out to see how Anya would do, since she'd actually gotten a chance to talk to the younger girl the day before.

Felix was stunned as Taijia did his dance routine. He really wasn't expecting that much skill from that young of a kid. The girl that went after him - Seojin according to her nametag, was also pretty good. But dancing was where Felix was most confident in his abilities. He had been dancing for six years already, and after passing auditions began learning a more complicated dance than the one he had used. He was already in the advanced group, but he was always looking to do better. He volunteered to go third, and had them cue up BTS' " Blood, Sweat, and Tears." As he finished his routine, the judges seemed impressed, and he was pleased with himself as he was sent back to the advanced group.

Anya clapped a little more enthusiastically than necessary as Taijia did his dance, then nearly just as enthusiastically for Seojin. As the third boy went, she felt like she was being surrounded by advanced dancers. She had made it into the advanced group, too, but she had a feeling it was simply because of how much she had practiced leading up to the audition. Of course, she had practiced a lot for this, too, but was still nervous. She volunteered to go fourth, mainly so that no other people in the advance group could make her more nervous. She had them start playing " Glass Bead" and did her dance routine, the first one she had choreographed herself with a little (okay, with a lot) of help from Taijia. As her routine finished, she was happy to be kept in the advanced group, but she wondered if the imposter syndrome would lessen any as the auditions and training went on. The last thing she wanted was to be bumped down a level, especially since she was here as a dancer.

Taehoon was impressed with several of the dancers. Taijia he wasn't surprised by, but he also already knew about him. Taehoon was also about ninety percent sure that the CEO had already made a decision about Taijia, since he was a whole year below the original age range that the CEO had been discussing. Seojin seemed very promising as well, and Felix, the kid from Argentina, had impressed Taehoon both in his audition video and with his dance here. He was pretty sure that the CEO had some concerns about his Korean level from the notes, but that was fixable. It wasn't like Qiwang had spoken much Korean when he'd been accepted to the company.
Anya was right on the cusp. If he'd not been impressed with how much she'd improved between her audition and the assessment, he might have honestly recommended sending her down to intermediate, but she had a lot of potential. She learned fast, and he knew from Kangwan that she was Taijia's friend.
As the assessment finished, he pulled her aside for a moment and said, in English since he knew she didn't have the best Korean, "You looked a little unsure when we said you were going to the Advanced class. You've improved dramatically since your audition, and I think that you can keep applying that improvement. Keep it up, ok?"
He didn't stick around talking with her, instead arranging the trainees so that the advanced students were in the back, the intermediate students in the middle, and the beginners in the front and said, this time in Korean, with Thomas translating for him, "Alright, we're going to get started learning the choreography for the assessment dance to put everyone on the same level of starting with a new song. You'll have classes going over it, and you'll learn the singing later today."
He got the music cued up and started leading them through the dance routine that he'd helped choreograph for the rearrangement of the song. After leading them through it a few times, he had them try to run it by themselves, one group at a time. The beginning group surprised him in a few places with some of them seeming to get it quite quickly. He mentally flagged those trainees as having potential but not much training. The intermediate group was about what he would have expected. They seemed to have about half of it down, but it was the easier parts, but they could miss a few steps and get back in to the beat. The advanced group was the last that he had go, and he watched them carefully. He wanted to see who was there because they'd drilled a few dances over and over, and who was there because they were adaptable and learned fast.

Tai held out a hand for a high five as Felix came back to the Advance group and said softly but excitedly, "Nice!"
When Taehoon got them started on learning the dance, Tai put all of his focus into that. He'd been praised before for learning choreography fast, and this was definitely a case where that applied. Nothing that Taehoon had put in the choreography was particularly hard. Where the skill would really show was in how well they could execute it and how fast they could learn it.
After they'd run through the dance three times, Tai was pretty sure he could do the whole thing right, though he hadn't filed off all the rough edges yet. He watched the Beginner and Intermediate groups struggling some, and told himself that if he could, he'd help people practicing later if they seemed to need it. He'd done that at the dance schools he'd attended some, though mostly with younger kids.
Finally, it was the advanced group's turn, and Tai felt ready. He was pretty sure that he managed to get all the steps right when they did the dance in front of Taehoon and the head dance coach. He was a little bit surprised though when the head dance coach nodded to him and said, "That's impressive, you've got it down already. If I were the rest of your group, I'd put you in charge of leading the dance practice."
Tai ducked his head, slightly worried that some of the older kids in the Advanced group wouldn't be best pleased with him, but at the same time, he was a little bit proud.

Seojin wasn't surprised after watching him out of the corner of her eye that the dance coach was recommending Taijia to lead the dance for the choreography. She had most of it, but there were definitely some things that were still eluding her and needing practice. At three run-throughs, she had about ninety percent of the choreography down. Taijia clearly had the whole thing. She didn't have an issue with someone a bit over six years her junior leading the class if he was the best, but she wondered about the other kids who were there.
She was relieved when she also got praise though for how well she'd already learned the choreography. Noting that she was one of a pretty small group that got actively praised made her feel like she was actually in the right place at the right time and had a shot at this audition working.
She worried for the people older than her who were in the beginner or intermediate groups for both of their areas. If she and several of the other amazing dancers were having trouble internalizing the pattern quickly enough, but they had until the end of the third day to have it all ready.
