"I like the violin." Remi muttered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. He kept his own tea cup near his lips, blowing on it softly, as he reached for the new piece of music Yunjin wanted him to learn. He sipped a bit of tea, only to jerk a bit as it was still too hot, but his eyes remained glued on the piece. It seemed slow at first, but as he keep reading, it picked up and a smile formed on his face. "Yeah, ok." He said once he got to the end of the piece, seeming to approve of it.
Elena blinked a couple times, but John smiled and leaned forward, taking the sugar spoon from his wife. He glanced to Yunjin. "Of course. I was the same way when I first moved to London, honestly. I'll let you try it how I grew accustomed to it. Though it's nothing like Asian teas," he explained, gently handing off a tea with a bit of cream and sugar. "In most black teas used in Britain, the cream and sugar are meant to compliment the flavor much more. Try this." He said with a smile.

Yunjin nodded at Remi's assessment of the piece and told him, "It's a long piece, so we are going to approach it one movement at a time. Part of the reason this is an excellent piece for where you are right now is that it starts out somewhat slow while introducing new techniques to you, and then maintains many of the same musical motifs as it speeds up. It basically does as a piece as a whole what I was having you do with the current piece by playing it at half speed first. This will be a bit of a challenge, but I fully believe that you can rise to it."
He turned to Elena and John, maintaining his smile and said, "Since Remi has expressed interest in looking into a local youth symphony, this piece would also provide a good starter audition piece, which applies also if he at some point chooses to attend community college or University and decides to try out for the orchestra there. Also, before he forgets or I forget, I've given Remi an little excercise ball used for hand stretching. He mentioned that his hand was still giving him a bit of trouble after his injury, and I can let you know where I get them, or just replace them for him as needed."
Once he'd gotten all of the relevant information out of the way, he sipped tentatively at the cup of tea that John had passed to him. It was strange and sweet, though not bad, as long as he didn't try to think of it as e same tea that he usually drank. He smiled and said, "It's good even if it's not what I'm used to. Rather like a desert."

"Once my bloody hand gets better this piece will be no problem at all." Remi told Yunjin assuredly, growling a bit as he seemed to be reminded of the stress ball, picking it up and tossing it up and down a couple times before using it properly.
"That would be lovely. We didn't even think of stress balls." Elena admitted, getting comfortable in her spot on the floor across from Remi and Yunjin. She looked to her son, "Speaking of which, I haven't heard any mention of you wanting to go college. Have you even applied?" She asked him.
Remi rolled his eyes, knowing what she was doing. He talked so highly of Yunjin, she was trying to bait the teacher to give him a "go to college" lecture. "No mum, we've been over this." He stated simply. "I don't even know what I'd focus on in college-" His mother opened his mouth, and he gave her a sharp look, "and for the last time I don't want to major in psychology."
Elena closed her mouth, pouting a bit. She'd been trying to push that focus since Remi was a kid, but she wasn't against him resisting. Still, she wanted to to at least have a college degree. She sighed and returned her attention to Yunjin. "I suppose you can think of it like that. I'm glad you enjoy it, then!" She told him happily.

Yunjin laughed a bit and shook his head, "I'm not surprised that it didn't occur to either of you. It's more a physical therapy sort of thing than an actual medical fix. It's something that I learned about after I strained a ligament in my hand in high school, which eventually got better, but it took some strengthening of the area around it. But it should help at least some. If the hand keeps bothering you, someone who is actually a physical therapist might be able to help more with that sort of thing."
Yunjin decided that it probably was best to get off this topic of conversation, so he sipped his tea a bit faster than he might have otherwise. He set down the cup softly on the tray that the tea had been brought in on, and he turned to Remi, checking to see if he was done with his own tea, then asked, "If you're ready, we could go ahead and start with the first eight bars of the first movement, and work through it a bit at a time for the rest of the lesson so that you have a good grasp of the entire piece in pieces. Your practice can be the old piece and trying to put the first movement of this one into a coherent whole."
He had a thought about something to mention to Remi, about school and possibilities to go further with music, but he could tell that Elena asking him about it was grating on his nerves, and he didn't want to put forth the idea in front of her, especially in case Remi wasn't interested.

Remi nodded, finishing his tea and reading more carefully over the beginning of the piece to make sure he could get the notes right. Then he played through the first eight bars without the bow, just making sure his fingers were right. Finally he glanced to Yunjin, "I think I got it." He said simply.
Elena gave a little pout that Yunjin hadn't been baited, but sipped on her tea, looking forward to seeing her son play. John decided to move back towards the kitchen, if anything to give the two some space while they practiced, but soon tapped on Elena's shoulder. "I know you want to watch our son, but don't you still have other appointments today?" He whispered to her, seeing Remi was about ready to start playing. Elena looked at her watch and made an "o" face, mouthing a 'thank you' to Yunjin, and a 'goodbye' to Remi and Anya before she was out the door.

Yunjin listened as Remi played the first eight bars, noting places where Remi struggled with the rhythm of the piece or the fingering. He waved a good-bye to Elena, but was mostly focused at this point on his student. He nodded when Remi finished, "Good, the rhythm was off in places, and there were a few places that you will probably need to drill the fingering a bit more, which I can point out to you in a moment. Let's go for the next eight bars now."
When Elena was out the door, and John seemed well clear of the room where they were holding the lesson, Yunjin said conversationally to Remi, "If you are interested in pursuing music long term, and you want to try to give yourself a leg up in that, there are schools that are basically Universities entirely focused on music. Julliard is the most famous, but there are quite a few others, generally they get called conservatories. They wouldn't make you complete the same sort of distribution requirements that a standard university would if you were majoring in music, and they are generally a fast track into international level symphonies if that is something that you would look into doing. I'm not going to get on your case about figuring out what you want to do next, but I can get information on application requirements and some of the possible options if that is something that you decided that you were interested in."

Remi went over the next eight bars first with just his fingers, now hesitant because he thought he was good on the first eight bars and even he caught where he messed up. He glanced up as Yunjin began talking. He sighed from the first three words of his speech, but then perked up. "Really? There's colleges like that?" He asked in disbelief. His violin seemed momentarily forgotten, and his eyes were wide as he looked at Yunjin. He nodded quickly, "Yeah. Yeah I'm definitely interested, I didn't even know that was a thing."

Yunjin nodded and replied, "I'll get some of the current requirements to apply for you, since I've not looked at them in a long time, so I don't really know what they are. The biggest thing though will of course be continuing to practice if you want to get into a conservatory, since auditions are one of the most crucial parts of the process."
Yunjin worked them through the entire piece, eight bars at a time, and when they got to the end of that, the time for the private lesson was starting to run low. He glanced at the wall clock after Remi had finished the final eight bars, and Yunjin told him, "We're getting a little bit short on time. I'd like you to keep practicing the piece that you've been working on for a while, and I'd like you to try to put together those eight bar long chunks. Remember to watch out for the tricky bits with double notes, since those were giving you a bit of trouble during that first play through."
He smiled at Remi and said, "Before we wrap up, I should probably check in with whichever of your parents is still around, just so that we can confirm that lessons will be ongoing at this time and such. Have you got any last questions?"

Remi looked down at the sheet music, seeming intent on learning the new piece even though Yunjin seemed to want him to take the practice of that piece slow. "Yeah, sounds good." He said simply, going back to the end of his tea, but wincing as it had gotten cold. He shook his head, but gave Yunjin a smile. "Except for overbearing parents, this wasn't half bad. I hope we can continue private lessons." He told Yunjin polietely.

Yunjin said firmly, "I would be happy to continue private lessons with you. We just need to sort out the logistics with your parents, and with you. They of course also weren't yet sure if they were going to want to sign Anya up for something."
He muttered quietly, "I hope that I made a decent impression on your parents as a responsible adult at least."
