Timur felt like an idiot. Sure, he'd woken up late this morning so he rushed out of the house. But, somehow, despite his keychain feeling lighter than usual, he had forgotten that the house key and car key were momentarily disconnected as he had brought his car in for routine service the day before. And he didn't even realize until now, about nine hours later, as he got home from work. He debated texting Inkar to come help him, but remembered his sister had commented something about having to be out until late today and wouldn't be able to answer her phone. He sighed and sat in the hallway, debating if he had any errands to run to waste time. He'd call the apartment manager, but the office was dark when he drove past it, suggesting they had already closed for the day. Allen emerged from his apartment for an afternoon walk, camera on its strap around his neck, and was surprised to see his handsome neighbor, Timur, he reminded himself, sitting dejectedly in the hall.
He blinked a few times, trying to figure out the situation. Timur looked like he wasn't sick or hurt, so he settled on the most likely option. He said, voice much clearer than the last time they'd spoken, "Hi Timur! Is everything alright? Did you manage to get locked out?"
He hesitated and then added, "I was about to go on a walk. If you've got a while to wait and wanted to join, I wouldn't mind having company."
He didn't add that he would actually like Timur's company. He wasn't sure if that would be weird pressure or not.

Timur looked up and saw Allen there, and he gave the other man a sheepish smile, "I did indeed." He stood up somewhat ungracefully and hesitated before speaking. "I'd um... I'd like that." He said simply, looking away from Allen. A part of him was panicking a bit, but it was also happy. His cute neighbor wanted to spend more time with him? Excellent! But also, Allen was cute and Timur didn't know the first thing about flirting or finding signs that someone else liked you. His boyfriend in college had confessed to him, so flirting or picking up on flirting was really beyond him.

Allen smiled at Timur and said, "Excellent, I suspect I'll be much better company today than last time we talked."
He held up the camera a little and said, "I like getting the chance to go out and take pictures of nature, so I will warn you in advance that my walks tend to involve a fair bit of random stopping when I see something interesting. I take photos of people for a living though, so usually taking photos for fun involves taking photos of things."
He headed for the elevators, glad for having company, and asked, "Other than getting locked out, how was your day? I don't think that I caught what you do last time we talked."
He wanted to keep the conversation as light as possible, get to know Timur a little bit better, but there was a part of him that was definitely tempted to flirt, to see if maybe Timur actually seemed interested. He couldn't help but like someone who would go to the trouble of helping the neighbor they didn't really even know, and also Timur was definitely good looking.

Timur smiled hesitantly at Allen's joke, muttering a "great!" and hoping it sounded more enthusiastic than he felt it did.
He let out a small laugh at Allen's warning, "That's fine. Just don't let me, accidentally trip over you or something." He followed Allen to the elevator.
"Oh!" Timur exclaimed, realizing they indeed hadn't talked about their careers until Allen just mentioned it. "I'm an aerospace engineer." His smile widened, "I'm on a team that works on spaceships and satellites, so it's always exciting."

Allen smiled listening to Timur's explanation of his career. He said, "Working on things that go into space sounds super cool. What's the most interesting thing that you've worked on to you?"
He led them out of the building once they got down the elevators and started them on the path towards the commons, always a decent walk, and the flowers were nice at the moment. He asked, "And what about outside of work? Are there hobbies that you particularly enjoy?"
He found himself wanting to find something to suggest doing with the other man, give himself a chance to see more of Timur.

Timur hesitated as he thought of his favorite project so far. "I got do a little bit of work on SpaceX, but I have my opinions that don't make it the coolest thing I've done, so I'd have to say getting to help a bit in the design of Perseverance, the Mars Rover. It was like, the tiniest bit of help, but it was still really cool." He said excitedly. He had been on a team that brainstormed what kind of motor it should have to survive the Mars duststorms, and gave one idea that was considered, but in the end another was chosen.
He put his hands in his pockets and thought again before speaking, giving Allen a nod, "I like listening to music. I'm Korean but I was born and spent the first ten years of my like in Kazakhstan, and often spoke Russian while there, so I listen to a lot of non-English music. I also like looking at art and stuff. Like regular art-art and things like comics and manga, too." He furrowed his eyebrows, "People for some reason get surprised when I say that, since I went into a STEM-based field. But really, what I'm doing has a creative element to it too, so it's not that weird." He rambled. He looked to Allen, "How about you, what are your hobbies?"

Allen grinned, listening to Timur talk about his work, and said, "That's fascinating. It sounds like interesting work to be a part of."
He nodded along, listening to Timur's interests and said, "We have some overlap. I was born in China, though I moved here when I was pretty young, just about to start elementary school. And I too like listening to music not in English, though some in English as well."
He paused when he saw some nice flowers in someone's front yard on the way to the Commons, and snapped a quick picture. He grinned and said, "And this is one of my other main hobbies, though I enjoy a lot of arts and writing. I guess that my job and my hobbies overlap quite a bit, but for work, I'm a fashion photo-journalist, and in my spare time, I take these sorts of nature photos, and my writing veers more towards the creative. The photography overlaps nicely with enjoying taking walks and gentle hikes."
He thought for a moment and added, "I read a lot as well. It was a good hobby when I wasn't able to be as active, and I enjoy it a great deal."

Timur smiled, "I enjoy it. I'd like to have my name on a cool project one day, though. It'd be cool to be able to look at something even remotely life-changing and say, 'I helped to make that.'" He looked down sheepishly. "I guess that's a lot of engineer's goals, though... Or heck, a lot of creative people's goals."
"Ah, that's cool. I was the only one of my siblings to be born in Kazakhstan, so it feels like I've grown up in a completely separate world from them, and... not just because the next oldest after me is still nearly ten years younger than me." He paused when Allen did, watching him take a picture. "I take a lot of pictures on my phone, but I've never even had so much as a digital camera growing up. It cool you got to make your hobby your career though. Well, mostly. I'd imagine that distinction is an important one for you?" He asked curiously. He'd always been warned against turning a hobby into a career, not that he had a hobby he was both good at and interested in pursuing as a career.
"What kind of books do you like to read?"
