Anbai was relieved when Adriel took their outfit well, blinking slowly and frowning slightly at Rochelle's mistake, but not holding it against her. She was still young, after all. "It takes practice. I forgive you." They told the girl, giving her a smile. Anbai was about to agree on getting glitter when their stomach protested to stalling on food any longer. They held a hand over their stomach and let out a short laugh, "I guess I will just have get glitter next time. I appreciate you being willing to share, though." They looked to Adriel, taking in his outfit finally, "nice look." They quipped. Finally, Anbai looked to Anlan, "I guess I am also famished." They said quietly.

Adriel looked down at himself then smiled, "thanks. I'm glad I wasn't left out. I would have felt out of place to be the only one not in purple."
Rochelle walked with her father and asked, "so if your pronouns are they/them, why do you use 'I' when talking?"
Adriel didn't think this was a rude question but it almost made him laugh because she'd pretty much answered it while talking. "My pronouns are he/him and I use I when I talk about myself. I don't refer to myself in the third person as he or Adriel, right?," he tried to explain. "Sorry, Anbai, that question was meant for you, I shouldn't have answered it. I apologize."

Anlan nodded with a little grin at Adirel's comment about not being left out of the purple and said, "I was going to try to give you a hint, so I'm glad that you caught on."
She led the way down the hallway, chuckling at Rochelle's comment and gently elbowed her twin, saying teasingly, "I mean, you could always use the royal we, xiaowang*."
She was starving and was glad that the restaurant wasn't far and didn't tend to have much of a wait since they were getting there early.

Anbai let out a soft laugh at the Rochelle's question and Anlan's resulting comment. They waved a hand in Adriel's direction, "It's fine, you're spot on." They shook their head at Anlan, "could you imagine how my students would react if I started doing that? They'd probably roll their eyes every time I used it."

Adriel perked up when the word "student" came up. "Students?" he asked, "do you teach? I work at the elementary school."
He followed the siblings to the restaurant, holding Rochelle's hand in the new and unfamiliar place.

Anlan put in a request for a table for four, making quick small talk with the host, since she and Anbai were familiar enough faces here.
She snorted at Anbai's comment and told her twin, "They're teenagers, of course they'd mock you about it, on the other hand, it might amuse them, and I'm sure that some of them would even get the pun."
She added, "Not that I'm actually recommending this course of action, it would be exceedingly silly."
She winked at Rochelle and said, "Don't you think that it would be silly for my twin to do that? I was making a small joke about it with our last name though, once we're sitting, I can show you the characters and properly explain what they mean, but our family name means king or royalty in Chinese."
She gave room for her twin to explain what they did, figuring that it would be good for Anbai to have the chance to talk to another teacher who was positive and accepting. She knew that they had a positive relationship with a few of the other high school teachers, but it was also weird because a lot of the teachers were the ones who had worked there when the two of them were students.

Anbai nodded at Adriel's question, still amused but deciding not to comment on their twin's words. "Yeah, I teach World History at the high school. I'd like to eventually focus on Asian history, but that would require get a PhD to become a college professor and I'm really not about the being-a-student life." They explained honestly. It wasn't that they disliked their job, quite the opposite, they loved it, and their students were great about 90% of the time, but they did have a preferred focus in history and the generic world history taught in high school wasn't completely it. Perhaps they would have talk to Yunjin about creating Chinese and Korean history courses. They decided to file that mental note in for later. "Which grade do you teach?" They asked Adriel, giving him a smile.

Adriel let go of Rochelle's hand so she could engage with Anlan while he listened to Anbai. "I find it funny how many of us teachers really aren't 'about that being-a-student-life.' I'm also not a huge fan of going back to school."
He thought about his history knowledge, "definitely not my best subject, but it sounds like your students are lucky to have you. I teach kindergarten. I can't say this without sounding creepy, but I like the little ones." Adriel winced, knowing that came out completely wrong. "I like to catch them in those formative years, because it's so interesting to see those wonderful brains at work as they discover and learn new things, and you get to help establish a baseline of love, openness and tolerance."
He realized he was gushing and smiled awkwardly, "sorry, I'm a bit of an early education nerd."

Anlan nodded at Adriel's explanation and said, "Honestly, it's really good to see kindergarten teachers who are willing to tackle hard subjects with kids at the appropriate engagement level. We've got a much younger brother, and I definitely saw a lot of teachers who didn't do that as well as we would have hoped, especially because he gets SpEd services. But it sounds like you and Anbai are on the opposite ends of age ranges that you like to work with. I'm on your side on this one, the little ones are fun to work with."
They were seated pretty quickly, and Anlan only briefly glanced at the menu, already knowing what she wanted from long familiarity with their favorite local Thai restaurant's menu. She smiled at Rochelle and pulled a little notebook and pen out of her purse, before saying, "I told you that I'd show you about the characters for our name if you're interested. Once you've figured out what you want to eat, I can show you."
She added for Adriel's benefit, "I'm happy to help with picking things from their menu. Our family has eaten here so many times that I know it mostly by heart at this point. Fair warning, their spicy food is actually and truly spicy."

Anbai sat down next to their sister and glanced at the menu for a second before returning their attention to Adriel. "I do know what you mean, though Anlan is right that I prefer the older kids... Which, now that mention it also sounds a bit weird." They said with a wince. Anbai waved their hand, "Anyway, the little ones still have so much imagination, it's like... They still believe in magic, while the older ones are much more jaded. They've seen some realities of the world and don't have that magic the littles have." Anbai agreed with what Anlan was saying about Davey, but they had never really been the one that was close to Davey. It was mostly better now, but they still felt awkward around their little brother.
They glanced again at the menu, checking if there was anything new they might want to try before deciding on the default option they always chose. "We can also recommend something if you're having trouble picking." They added on to their sister's comment.

Adriel nodded, "I'm sorry your younger brother went through that. I hope he's found some better teachers now."
He took a look at the menu, unsure of what to get. "If either of you have recommendations I'm happy to take them. Rochelle doesn't do spicy," he told the siblings.
"I can to!" Rochelle said, raising her voice at her father.
Adriel set the menu down and turned his attention to his daughter, "Butterfly, I feel upset and sad when I hear your voice raised."
Rochelle looked around, looking to Anlan and Anbai for a way out of her father's "feelings" conversation. When she found no escape she sighed and crossed her arms across her chest. "I was mad you told them I couldn't eat spicy food. It makes me sound weak."
Adriel nodded, "I understand. I'm sorry I told them something you didn't want them to know. If I ordered something spicy would you eat it?"
Rochelle shook her head, "too spicy," she said quietly.
"Is there a reason why you think eating spicy food makes you strong and not eating it makes you weak?"
"I just don't want to be teased," she whined.
"I don't think they'll do that, but you can ask them. Do you know what they're thinking? Do you think that maybe you're putting words into their mouths and thoughts into their heads? Are you worried about what they will say or what they might say?" Adriel asked, offering her his hand.
Rochelle sighed again and dropped her arms, putting one hand in her father's giant paw. "I can ask them..." she turned to face Anlan and Anbai, "is it okay if I don't eat something spicy?"

Anlan watched the exchange, and she smiled down at Rochelle, saying, "Of course it's OK if you have something that isn't spicy. It's going to be you eating it, so you should eat something that you would enjoy. There are plenty of foods that I don't like, and I wouldn't want someone trying to make me eat them, and I don't expect everyone to have grown up eating spicy food the way I did."
She gently indicated on the menu in front of Rochelle, "The Pad Thai is really good, it's a noodle dish with a peanut sauce, and it's not spicy unless you order it that way. Most things on the menu can be ordered at the level of spiciness you want too, though there are a few things that are always spicy."
She glanced up at Adriel, making sure that she'd read the situation appropriately.

Anbai was really pleased with the way Adriel handled Rochelle. They knew kids should be talked to like little adults, but they never knew how to actually simplify into words a little kid would understand. This was part of the reason they were still somewhat awkward with Davey, and also why they chose the older grades. They nodded in agreement with their sister's words. "I also have plenty of foods I don't like. And do you want to know a secret?" They asked, leaning slightly over the table to be closer to Rochelle. "I don't do that great with spicy foods either. I like spicy food, but sometimes it's really too spicy. I usually have to give my food to Anlan when that happens." They said to her in a stage whisper.

Rochelle nodded and turned back to her dad, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, daddy."
Adriel smiled, "thank you for apologizing. I accept. Can I have a hug?"
Rochelle scooted closer to her dad and tried to wrap her arms around his waist, because of his size and muscle mass, it didn't work, but she squeezed him nonetheless.
"So strong!" Adriel said, hugging her back. "Would you like me to order you Pad Thai like Anlan suggested?"
Rochelle nodded and let her father go, "yes please."
"Okay. I think I'll do the yellow curry, but not very spicy, because I'm not good at eating spicy foods either."
