((TW: transphobia))
Samnang had been having a good day. It was fairly slow, he had quite the competent team for his shift, and the mood of customers was... surprisingly good today. There was an adorable service dog that came through earlier, and it excited him because he'd seen the customer before, meaning they were becoming regulars and Sam would get to see the dog more often. Good times all around.
He had forgotten that, as July came closer, he'd begun decorating to celebrate. Not that he could do much while staying within uniform, and as assistant manager, it was imperative he did so, but he still found ways. He got one pin from the Starbucks employee shop, a trans flag in the shape of a heart, and put that on his apron. He also had earrings that were studs, but rainbow colored studs. The beanie he was wearing, though mostly black, also had in small print "trans rights are human rights," but he wore that with the print facing backwards and bunched up so that wasn't usually as noticeable (It was his only hat even close to being uniform approved, he was usually good about making sure the words were hidden). As if that wasn't enough, his name tag was also in colored in with the trans colors.
So when a customer gave him a nasty look before he'd even said 'hello,' Samnang initially assumed it was just the First Grumpy Customer of the Day. "Hello! What can I get started for you today?" He asked the man.
The man ignored him.
"Um... excuse me? Sir?" He said, waving a hand over the pastry case. No response from the man. He glanced to the cashier for a second before shrugging. The cashier's eyes widened momentarily and she motioned to her forehead. Samnang didn't get it at first, until his hand went to his head and noticed his beanie had unfolded and the words had snuck up to the front. "Oh shit." He said under his breath, ducking behind the pastry case and fixing his beanie before trying to get the customer's attention again. "Excuse me, sir. Can I get something started for you?" He tried again.
"I don't want anything from you." The man said, hardly loud enough for him to hear.
Samnang felt like his blood ran cold, but he tried to play it off, his smile looking more forced than before. "If you're just getting a coffee, tea, or pastry, I can prep that for you too." He said in his customer service voice.
"I don't want anything from you." The man repeated. He glared at Samnang, "So stop bothering me, tranny."
"Excuse me?" Samnang asked, his customer service voice dropping. He didn't really know how the man came to that conclusion, as besides his flags, which could easily just be in support, he had been passing for over ten years without error. Even when he let his hair get a bit long, which it wasn't at the moment, he passed. The man moved up to the register and Samnang shuffled next to his cashier. "Sir, if you would like to buy anything I would ask that you please respect all of my employees, myself included. Now, would you care to repeat that?"
"I don't want you anywhere near my order." The man repeated.
"Why, are you afraid I'll infect it?" Sam asked, getting heated.
"Sam," the cashier said quietly, tugging on his sleeve a bit, "Just kick him out, and lets move on."
"I'm not leaving until I get what I came here for!" The man told the cashier firmly.
