In the afternoon of the first full day of the audition camp, the trainees were brought to the big vocal practice room, so that they could be assessed into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced groups for Vocals or Rap. They had been asked to self select into a group, or join a small group who wanted to do both.
[group singing practice room]
The same Yuseong song that had been used for the dance assessment had been rearranged to have parts for the male trainees and parts for the female trainees, and they would be learning that piece for their assessment over the next few days, but just like with their dance assessment, they were first being classed off their initial auditions as well as a quick vocal test with the head vocal coach and Kangwan. They were also shown the smaller practice rooms where they would be able to practice independently. [individual practice room] They were instructed that these were also a good place if they wanted to practice guitar or keyboard without disturbing others.
As Kangwan came into the practice, he bowed to his singing coach, exchanging pleasantries. Kangwan felt a bit nervous about being viewed as a trainer, but he hoped it was something he'd get used to quickly. The singing coach prepped him for what to expect, correctly assuming Kangwan wouldn't really remember his audition and first few days of training very well.

Tai was a little bit less certain as they moved from the dance assessment before lunch, to the singing assessment afterwards. While he knew that he was technically sound, he also hadn't had his voice break yet, and he worried about sounding too childish. He was a little bit reassured by having Thomas appear in the singing studio around the same time that the trainees started to make their way in, and having Kangwan there was reassuring as well.
He was a little bit surprised that he had been initially sorted into the Advanced group for singing, especially since he probably would have put himself into the intermediate group. He wondered how the people who had categorized themselves as not being sure if they wanted to do vocals or rap (as opposed to people who did both) would handle the day. As the reassessment went on, he got a little bit more sure of himself, and after a few other people in the advance group had sung for the head vocal coach and Kangwan, he stepped forward.
He got them to cue up the back track for Uniq's "Falling in Love" which he'd realized he could do a little bit of a show off performance with after his audition because there were Korean, Chinese, and English versions. He liked it as a song to sing partially because it was all in pretty high register, which meant that he wasn't fighting with the bottom notes. He noticed as he made mistakes in the performance, going slightly off pitch a few times as he switched from Korean, to Chinese, to English between verses, but he hit the high notes, and when he looked at Kangwan and then the head singing coach, they were both nodding approvingly, and he got sent back to the Advanced group.
It occurred to him then that growing up with his Uncles, he might have developed slightly overly high expectations of vocal competence.

Post by Woo Seojin on Jun 16, 2019 23:35:34 GMT -8
Seojin wasn't surprised precisely when she was initially sorted into the Intermediate group in the vocals room, but she also knew that she could do better than that. She'd been focusing on her singing in the months since her audition and the camp, trying to polish the edges that would have made her not be placed into the Advanced group based on her initial audition.
As she listened to the Advanced group's reassessments, she thought, I can do that. She wanted to be known as a dancer who was also a good vocalist someday, and this was the first step for that. Continuing her theme, she'd picked a song that she knew that she could do well with, specifically, Luna's "Free Somebody."
She couldn't really help herself from dancing along a little bit as she sang, but she also grew more confident as she cleared the high parts, where her naturally slightly lower register voice made it a little bit harder. She didn't want to get stuck being made to do rap because her voice was a little on the lower side when she honestly had no confidence in getting the hang of rap and she knew that she could be a decent singer.
She was relieved when she saw the vocal trainers giving each other a considering look and then leaning over to talk seriously in hushed tones. The head vocal coach told her, "Congratulations, you're moving up to the advanced group. That was very well executed."
Seojin bowed deeply, saying, "Thank you," very respectfully, and she mostly managed to keep herself from bouncing over to the cluster of Advanced trainees. She was pretty sure that she would be one of the worst vocalists in that section, but she also was pretty sure that she could hold onto her spot.

Felix went from dance to singing and felt a lot less confident in this subject. He had been intially sorted into the beginner group for singing, but was told if he went for rapping he could probably move up to the intermediate group. He wasn't really sure if he had the charisma needed for rapping, but there was classes for that too, as long as he made it through this training process. Still, from his audition to now he had been doing vocal training, even going into choir for this school year, so he hoped he could improve his status level in singing. Even so, it wouldn't be the end of the world if he was assigned as a rapper. He had chosen to sing G-Dragon's "Heartbreaker," which would allow him to also display his rapping skills. He had admittedly spent a lot of his time focusing on memorizing the lyrics, so he hoped the work he put into singing was enough. As he finished his assessment, the two coaches discussed for a moment before telling him, "I think in singing you are still at beginner level, but for rapping, you're definitely at the Intermediate level. I see you are in the group that wants to do either singing or rapping, would you consider just going into the rapping group?" "Uh... yeah. I can do that." He replied back. I guess I'm gonna be a rapper.Kangwan gave him a reassuring smile, "Idols will often start off in one position and then slowly join in on other positions. Just being a rapper for now doesn't mean you'll never get to be a singer." Felix nodded, giving him a bow and a smile. "Thank you, sunbae."

Anya went into the practice room when it was her turn for reevaluation, nervous but thankful for the familiar face with Kangwan there. After a lot of debate, with Taijia, with her family, with her singing coach(es), she decided she really wanted to 'wow' the judges, especially after getting place in the beginning singing group - which, to be fair, until the audition, she hadn't been focusing on her voice, but it was still a letdown when she got critiqued during the audition - she had chosen to sing Amber's "Borders."As she finished the song, she waited anxiously as Kangwan and the singing coach discussed in what felt like rapidfire Korean. Finally, they separated and Kangwan was grinning. "You've really improved," the head coach began, "You've still got a ways to go, but I think we can agree to bump you up to the intermediate group." Anya perked up, "really? Thank you! I will not let you down!" She promised them.
