((TW: mentions of sexual assault (no details), hoarding))
Face Claim: Heeseung Lee
Xander is 5'10" (178cm) and weighs 135 lbs (61 kg). He's got some muscle as he has a generic interest in sports and outdoor activities, though he's not particularly built, and also tends to make himself look smaller than he is. His skin is naturally tanned and he has naturally black hair. He's been debating dying it another color, but doesn't know what color to choose so he's kept it natural. He usually likes his hair shaggy but not too long, though with some struggle he could probably get a small ponytail on the top of his head.
He has his left ear pierced twice, and his right ear pierced once. He mostly forgets to wear earrings, but does occasionally remember, and has some dangly ones he's particularly attached to. His clothing style tends to be comfortable, and at school he typically just wears sweats with a t-shirt and hoodie, or jeans if he knows he's not going to be doing any sort of exercise at school that day. On days he's going to meet friends, he'll usually dress up a little more and wear jeans and nice t-shirts with a jacket or vest over it. He'll occasionally wear accessories other than earrings, though not frequently.
Xander is quiet and shy by nature, and get flustered easily. He sometimes has a lot of emotions and lashes out at people, but that's a fairly rare occurrence, and once he's calmed down he usually apologizes to the person he lashed out at. He's been working on not doing that with his therapist, but it's still a bit of a work in progress. He quick to defend others, especially more often than he defends himself. His memories of most of his childhood are fuzzy at best. Occasionally he has nightmares that keep him up half or most of the night, and he sometimes gets out of school on those days, other days he appears a little more fluffy and in need of cuddles, while simultaneously seeming more closed off. He gets very anxious around messes, especially ones surrounding mold or bugs.
He's good at sports, though he's never attached on to a single one. Since middle school, he's done a variety of sports when allowed, and is currently in JV Basketball. He's also good at making friends, though he doesn't believe this. He has a very kind, natural smile that attracts people to him. Friends that have done carpool karaoke with him also tend to say he has a nice voice, but he doesn't believe that, either. His weaknesses are being in very large crowds, loud noises, and bigger men. Another thing that is both a weakness and strength is he's good at reading people, but sometimes over-analyzes them and frequently thinks people are upset/angry at him or dislike him. He's bad at showing his emotions, especially ones that he feels make him vulnerable (sadness, pure happiness).
He likes animals (the family has cats, he also likes dogs and many wild animals), coffee and tea, food, music (Kpop, rock/alternative, calming music), and learning Chinese (he chose this over Korean because it's a more common language worldwide). Despite his shyness, he enjoys theatre and choir, and participates in both at school. He dislikes yelling, loud noises, being alone in crowded areas (and in general being in very crowded areas - Pike Place Market during tourist season is basically a no-go for him). He absolutely hates any type of mess. His room is usually very clean, at most messy the bed might be unmade and he didn't put away his school books. He's also afraid of bugs.
Although he has some interest in his birth country (it's how he discovered and got into KPop), he doesn't know much outside of where's he's from since he has his birth certificate still. He's debated learning Korean, and even tried self-study a couple times, but usually gave up. Even though he could have picked Korean as his language to learn, he decided to go with Chinese since it was a more prevalent language worldwide. He is curious what his birth name was, and occasionally debates asking someone to tell him.
ADOPTED MOTHER
Name: Heather Pace (née Adamson)
Birth Year: 1980
Occupation: Elementary School Teacher - 2nd grade
Feelings Toward: Loves her, but occasionally has some teenage-hormone-fueled hatred towards her. Really hopes she doesn't adopt any more of her previous students.
ADOPTED FATHER
Name: Timothy "Tim" Pace
Birth Year: 1977
Occupation: Paralegal
Feelings Toward: Neutral. The guy hasn't done anything wrong, but Xander's been burned by too many men in his past to fully accept him as a parent. The logical part of Xander's brain tells him the dude is perfectly fine and there's a bond there, but who has ever been able to listen to the logical part of their brain.
OLDER SISTER
Name: Alyssa Pace
Birth Year: 1995
Occupation: Data Entry at a company in Seattle
Feelings Toward: They had a bit of a rough start when he first joined the family because he was the first "new sibling," and she had some adjusting to make. Nowadays, especially now that she lives on her own in Seattle, they get along much better.
YOUNGER SISTER
Name: Emma Pace
Birth Year: 2012
Occupation: Elementary School Student - 6th Grade (2022-2023)
Feelings Toward: She's cute, though they don't have much in common. Xander will often sit quietly and listen to music with her.
YOUNGER BROTHER
Name: Elijah Pace
Birth Year: 2013
Occupation: Elementary School Student - 5th Grade (2022-2023)
Feelings Toward: Since Xander is about 10 ten years older than him, they don't have much in common, but similar to Emma, he likes the kid, just doesn't relate much with him. They occasionally hike together over the summer.
Xander was adopted from Korea when he was a baby by a white American family. They gave him his name, and though they held on to his birth certificate, they decided his Korean given name was too difficult and so they didn't incorporate it into his name at all. At some point after the adoption had been approved, his adopted parents began hoarding. It got serious around the time he started school, and the house was condemned and deemed uninhabitable. The couple lived with their brother (Xander's adopted maternal uncle) and his family while they looked for a new place to live. In the meantime, the basement apartment where the small family was living was starting to reflect the home that had been condemned. On top of that, Xander's uncle had started sexually abusing him. Xander's situation wasn't discovered until second grade, where he had Heather as a teacher. CPS was called, and Xander was sent to foster system, along with his cousins. Due to this sudden change, and also coping with trauma, Xander had to repeat second grade.
Xander was lucky enough to mostly stay in Western Washington for most of his time in the foster care system, though he did move a variety of places within that, and had a nearly-five month stay in Spokane that lasted from the end of one school year to one month into the next school year. He mostly kept to himself at foster homes, some due to strict rules for foster kids that bordered on or were abusive, others because by this point, he expected to be punished for being too rambunctious.
It wasn't until he was partway through seventh grade (in Anacortes) that he returned to his hometown of Cedar Beach and joined Heather's family. It was then that he discovered that she had been trying to adopt him all this time, but due to legal things it took a long time. Even when she tried to foster him, the courts were being slow about it, so she just applied for the adoption. She had been a teacher he remembered, because he liked being in her class, even if it was only for six months of the school year. He was sent to counseling soon after being adopted, and it took a while to see results, but they are finally starting to surface. It took him a while to come out of his shell as well, and due to his past, he's become a naturally quiet and shy person. A turning point in his feeling accepted by the family was when his parents noticed a tiny bi pride pin on his backpack, and bought him a flag to hang in his room.
