Kit had the day off, and knew that his brother also did not have school that day. He had just gotten paid the Friday previously, and he had already paid any bills he had, so he wanted to get to spend it on his brother. He chatted with his mother over tea while waiting for his brother to show his face, chatting excitedly about his plans for the day, as long as Lek didn't already have any plans. It had been too long since he'd even seen his brother, since by the time Lek would get home from school, Kit was headed off to work to help set up and open the club, and would also occasionally just leave early to catch some time with friends (and bonus points if Devi was there). His mom wished the two of them had fun before having to leave for work, and Kit bid her goodbye and went about cleaning up the kitchen. He had woken up unusually early for him (especially since he'd started working nights), so he wasn't expecting Lek to be up when he'd gotten up, but he still hoped his brother would be up soon. Lek had been awake for a little while, but he'd not finished the book that he'd been reading last night, so while he could hear the vague sounds of his mom and Kit talking in the kitchen, he snagged it from his nightstand so that he could finish the last chapter. He finished just after his mom left, and he padded out to the kitchen in his pajamas and slippers, the book tucked under his arm so that he could put it back in the library bag.
He greeted his brother, "Good morning," in carefully practiced Thai because he liked making his brother proud of how much Thai he'd picked up at this point. He switched back to English to ask, a little bit excitedly though trying to keep it reserved in case he hadn't heard Kit correctly, "What are you doing today?"
He put the book into the bag and went and grabbed his own cup of tea, sipping it carefully because it was still warm. He waited to find himself something to eat to see what Kit would say, just in case Kit was planning to take him somewhere with food.

Kit grinned as his little brother greeted him in Thai. "Good morning." He paused a moment before continuing, "Well, I don't work, and you're off school today. Therefore, I was hoping you'd want to hang out with your big brother today. I was thinking of going to The Market and we could shop and eat and drink good teas and stuff." He offered.
He had noticed Lek put a book into the book bag, and gestured toward it, "Was your book good? I feel like you've been reading a lot faster and uh... more, lately." He said. "It's good." He added, realizing his original words could have sounded wrong somehow.

Lek smiled at Kit's suggestion and chirped, "That sounds like a lot of fun. I'll have a small breakfast so that I've got lots of room for yummy things at the Market!"
He grabbed one of the granola bars that were mainly for mornings that mom or Kit had to drop him off at before school care because of schedules. They would hold him for a while, but they weren't heavy enough to disrupt his appetite. He could also eat them quickly. He munched on the granola bar as he finished his tea. He answered Kit, "Yeah, I like reading, and I've started being able to go into the middle grades book section at the library and things are way more interesting! I like chapter books, especially the ones with characters more like us. I still have to get Thai books from the little kids' section, but I'm getting better, and there were some poetry books for kids in Thai that the library got recently, and those were actually cool because they were easy words but they were pretty."
His teacher had praised him for reading above grade level, and he was proud of himself. It helped that books were reliable companions, and he could take them with him to his dad's place when he had to visit. That made him think of his last visit, and he decided that he would test something. There'd been an outfit that he'd wanted to wear when his father took him to the zoo, and he'd been scolded and told to change into something more appropriate for the situation, but he thought that it was a nice outfit. Kit would at least be nice if it was actually clothes he shouldn't wear places.
He finished his granola bar and tea and put the wrapper in the trash and the cup in the kitchen so that it could be loaded into the dishwasher once someone who could reach all the shelves had put the dishes away from the last load. He told Kit, "I'll be dressed in just a minute."
He carefully grabbed the long blue and purple swishy T-shirt that he'd gotten the last time he'd been shopping with his mom, and a pair of black leggings that had originally been for dance class but he just thought were comfortable. He grabbed a lightweight sweater that he could throw over it, but he didn't put it on yet. He'd grab his comfy slip on shoes at the door, but he looked at himself. He thought he looked nice, but his dad had said it looked way too much like a dress. He sighed, brushed his hair quickly, and ducked back out of his bedroom.
He went and slipped on his shoes and waited by the door to see what Kit would say.

"That's excellent!" Kit replied in response to his brother's enthusiasm about reading. "Maybe over the summer we can get a easy chapter book in Thai and read it together." He offered.
He looked at his brother from over the edge of his phone as he emerged, noticing the outfit was rather effeminate. He wondered what his dad would have said if he saw Lek wearing it, shuddering at the thought before realizing he possibly already had seen him in it. He hoped not, but his heart ached; he could only imagine what their dad might have said about something like that kind of outfit. "That's a cute outfit, little brother," he began, saying the last words in Thai, "do you think you will be comfortable in that? Other people might mistake for a dress and call you a girl." He was trying to phrase it in a way that showed he didn't mind, but he also didn't want his brother getting bullied by random strangers or misgendered to the point of frustration, either. "If you're okay with that, we can go, but I want to make sure that's okay with you because I don't want you getting upset if it happens a lot."
To be fair, it wasn't like he was in the most masculine clothes, either, with a fishnet undershirt and tight, dark blue skinny jeans. But the shirt he had over the fishnet was the right size for him, and couldn't be mistaken for a dress. He also had on plenty of jewelry, from earrings to rings, so to tell his brother he couldn't wear what he was wearing would not only be mean, it would be unfair. "I'm not mad or anything," He reiterated, "I just want to make sure you're aware of that and okay with it."
((Note: he's wearing a similar top/outfit as his hover (big) picture.))

At the offer to read together, Lek grinned and went to throw his arms around his brother, "Can we? That sound awesome!"
Lek listened to his brother's question about his clothes and lowered his chin a little bit, hiding his eyes behind his hair. His brother really did sound OK with it though. He said tentatively, "I like it. And I don't care if people think I'm a girl sometimes. There's nothing wrong with being a girl, and it's not like they know me. Plus, I like your clothes and Devi's clothes, and I want to wear cool things too."
He chewed on his lip for a second and added, somewhat morosely, "Dad said I wasn't aloud to wear the outfit out of the house, or like in front of him, and I don't get it."
He glanced up at his brother, ready to change his mind and change to another outfit if Kit actually didn't seem OK with it afterall.

Kit laughed and reciprocated the sudden hug. "Of course! I'd love to get to do that with you. It would be a lot of fun, don't you think?" He said with a grin.
Kit nodded, "As long as you're okay with it, then it's fine. I just didn't want you to get upset if it happened." He looked over his brother's outfit, giving him a smile, "It's a very cute outfit on you."
The smile faded as Lek brought up their dad. "Dad... doesn't like anything different from what he considers 'normal.' It is silly, but you should be careful not to push him." He didn't want to tell his brother not to dress in whatever made him happy, but also wanted him to stay safe.
He shook his head as if shaking away the bad thoughts, and gave his little brother another smile, though it had a hint of sadness to it now, "Shall we go then?"

Lek grinned, relieved and pleased that his big brother liked the outfit after all. He muttered, "I won't push Dad about it, but I'd rather just be here where I can wear the clothes I like."
He grinned again, looking up at Kit and said, "Alright, I'm ready to go!"
He took Kit's hand so that they could walk together. He didn't need it; he knew his way around the area and even how to take the bus himself if he needed to, though he always had Kit or his mom with him for the bus, but he was excited to hang out with his brother, and he was pretty sure that it would make Kit feel better if he showed it in a way that Kit could feel and believe was real. He felt bad for mentioning their Dad around Kit though, knowing that for all his struggles with their Dad, Kit had had it worse by far, even if Kit didn't want him to know too much about it. He was glad that they were headed to something distracting.

Kit internalized the comment his little brother made, deciding he'd mention it to his mom. He knew she wanted to protect both of them, and to hear their dad had been berating Lek would not make her happy. He smiled as Lek took his hand, and led his little brother to the bus stop near their home. He leaned against the overhang, still holding Lek's hand, and kept an eye out for the bus. "So is there somewhere in particular you want to eat breakfast? I don't have cash on me right now, but it won't be much trouble to get some if the place you want to go to is cash only."

Lek frowned thoughtfully as he thought about food. He said, "I like trying things. Man Hei always has good pastries for breakfast, or the French bakery, or Piroshki Piroshki. But I wanna try your favorite."
He pouted up at his big brother, hoping that Kit would choose. He didn't want to pick something that Kit didn't like, and he liked trying new things. The Market was always an adventure, and he didn't get to go down there very often.
He asked hopefully, "Once we've eaten, can we go to some of the used bookstores?"

Kit thought for a bit before saying hesitantly, "I also like all those places. Have you ever been to the bagel place?" He asked. He didn't know how often Lek got to go to the market without him, but he presumed there were times their mother had to go to it and probably brought Lek. "They have a lot of bagel options, as well as a handful of cream cheese options, so you can pick how sweet or savory you want your bagel to be." He explained to his little brother.
Kit nodded, "Of course we can!" He said excitedly. "There's always something something interesting in used bookshops."

Lek paused thoughtfully for a second and then shook his head and said, "I have not been to the bagel place. That sounds tasty though! We can go, I like trying new things!"
Lek was excited as the bus pulled up, and he didn't quite drag his older brother through boarding the bus, waiting as patiently as he could for Kit to pay his fare and then heading for the area with some raised seats where they could sit together and clambering up and over to the window seat. He hesitated for a moment then and looked over his shoulder, asking Kit, "Are these seats OK? I like being able to see out and over the rest of the bus."
He pouted a little bit, hoping that his brother wouldn't object to him impulsively making that choice. Kit usually let them do things that he wanted to, but Lek wanted to make sure that it stayed that way and that his brother was happy with him.

Kit followed Lek onto the bus and to the back, nodding, "Yeah, these seats are fine. It makes sense to want to be able to see out and see what's happening on the bus." He smiled teasingly, "And you're small, so you'd need a boost." He teased lightly.
He let a silence fall between them for a moment, Kit staring absentmindedly at some random ad on the bus for a bit, before he spoke up, keeping his voice low so as not to disrupt the other passengers. "Y'know... It's good you like trying new things. It's an important trait to have. You can't know you don't like if you never try it. But also, though I don't expect it to happen today, it's okay to say no if something really seems like something you don't like or don't want to do." He paused, not really sure why he felt like imparting wisdom onto his little brother, or maybe wishing he would have gotten praise for any random good traits he may have had as a kid. He glanced to his brother, giving him a soft smile, "It's also important to keep in mind that your tastes can change, so something you maybe didn't like before, you could like now." He let out a soft laugh, "Just uh... don't shoot this conversation back at me the next time I refuse to eat something."

Lek pouted at his older brother and said, "I'm still growing!"
He hoped that he'd be as tall as Kit, or even taller, but he had no idea if he would be. Kit was far taller than either of their parents.
Lek smiled a little as he listened to Kit ramble. He knew that trying new things was a good thing, but it was nice to hear from Kit. He laughed a little bit though and said, "No, I'm definitely reminding you next time you don't want to eat vegetables. Vegetables are delicious."
He stuck his tongue out at his older brother quickly before leaning on his shoulder, watching things go by out the bus window.

Kit laughed lightly and pulled Lek into a hug. "I know, I'm just teasing." He said lightly, rubbing the boy's arm a bit before letting him go.
"Then I will promptly ignore you and pretend this conversation never happened." He replied to Lek's "threat." He added under his breath, "Or maybe to set a good example I'll try it once. But I make no promises." He watched the bus as it filled up, glad it didn't seem like it was going to get overcrowded today. They'd left around the end of rush hour, so he presumed they'd be fine, and he was glad they already had a seat. "It might get a bit crowded by the time we get into the city..." He muttered to his little brother.
