Taijia got the kimchi out of the fridge and put it on the counter while Kangwan was filling the bowls with rice. He grabbed two pairs of chopsticks along with spoons from the cupboard, and when he took a bowl back from Kangwan, he held out one of the sets of utensils. He said firmly but with a smile, "You should serve yourself first because you're a guest."
He pointed to the jar of kimchi, and waited patiently for Kangwan to serve himself before he would get enough of the kimchi for himself. Hwangjung had gotten a really big container of it because it was something that all of them would eat and was easy enough to turn into a meal.
He asked curiously, "Are you actually from Korea, or did you grow up here like my Uncles?"

Kangwan nodded, pulling some of the kimchi out and putting it into his bowl. He stepped back a little, somewhat surprised at how independent Taijia seemed to be. He blinked a couple times before realizing he was asked a question. "Um... I actually just came from Korea recently..." He said slowly.

Taijia looked excited when Kangwan said that he'd come from Korea only recently. He grinned a bit around the first mouthful of food he had taken, raising his hand to cover his mouth after it occurred to him. He asked, "What's it like there? My uncles say that they'll take me to visit someday, but they can't yet. My dance teacher sometimes goes there because he's a choreographer, but even though Uncle Hwannie writes songs that get sold in Korea, he never goes, so they can't send me along. I want to see what it's like because I've heard Uncle Jin and Uncle Sheng's stories of visiting when they were my age."
He sighed a little bit, stream of chatter stopping for a moment as he focused on the important business that was his food, but another though eventually occurred to him, and he asked, "Do you like it here?"

Kangwan gave Taijia a simple eyesmile, though his mouth remained closed, also holding a bunch of food. After he swallowed his mouthful, he let out a short laugh, "Since I went into training at nine, I'm probably not the best one to ask." He admitted honestly. "But food is a lot cheaper, and clothes are more expensive. Also public transportation is a lot better than here..." He tried to think of other basic differences, but his eyes got a bit darker at the last question. "I do... Enough... I suppose. Korea's still my home, though." He said softly, almost a bit sadly.

Taijia looked thoughtful then. He ate a bit more, thinking over what he wanted to say next as he did so. He finally asked, "You're in one of the groups that Uncle Hwannie writes for sometimes, right? That was what you were training for? What was it like?"
He tried not to show quite how curious he was about it. He liked his Uncle Hwannie's music, and dancing, and singing was fun. He sometimes wondered if something like that would be something he would want to do, but then it was also kind of scary. He'd never even visited Korea yet, but Kangwan had starting training when he was only a little bit older than Tai.

Kangwan waited for another question for a couple seconds before deciding it was safe to take more bites, and even after the questions, he took the time to finish the food in his mouth while he contemplated his answer, though he did nod. "I am, yes." He said finally. "Training is really not easy, but if you have a passion for singing or dancing, it's worth it. For me, I love singing, but I wasn't good at dancing. It's hard when you can only do one well." He paused, thinking over his words and how to phrase it properly, "The ones who came in because of their looks were different than the ones that came in because they wanted to sing or dance." His mouth twitched down a bit, feeling like it felt like he was looking down on a couple of his band mates just by saying that. "It's not always the case, but sometimes..." He took a breath, "I guess it's kind of like, if you want something in this world, you have to work for it, no matter what, so it was worth it to me to sacrifice no field trips, and very little sleep, in order to have the chance to learn to compose, and sing." He explained carefully.

Taijia nodded thoughtfully after Kangwan's explanation, thinking about the characters in some of his favorite books that he read with Hwangjung who had to fight really hard for things they wanted, sometimes even when they seemed impossible. He mulled over the thoughts quietly, focusing on finishing his food with a little thoughtful crease forming between his eyes. He thought that he might want to try for something like that, something that would let him keep dancing a lot.
When he finished his food, he carefully picked up his bowl and chopsticks and took them over to the sink to rinse and put in the dishwasher. He looked expectantly over at Kangwan, a small smile on his face, and said, still with a tone of interest in his voice because he was curious about what sort of homework a big kid like Kangwan had, "Should we go do homework now? The sooner we finish the sooner we can dance, but I still wanna see what your homework is like."

Kangwan finished off his own bowl, standing up and going to rinse it off before looking to the young boy as to what to do with it. He smiled when Taijia mentioned wanting to see his homework. "Yeah, we can get started on homework. I could use some dancing practice anyway, so I'm looking forward to it too." He admitted honestly.

Taijia led the way to the living room, with its old, slightly battered, but still clean and very functional couch and its area set up for Taijia to study with a little table. He looked around for a second, wondering where Kangwan would sit, and eventually said, sounding slightly uncertain, "I do my homework in here usually, though sometimes in my room."
He dug his things out of his backpack that his Uncle Jin had brought in from the car, and started in on his homework, bored by it, but motivated by the promise of dance practice and maybe seeing Kangwan's homework later. Second grade math was so boring though. He'd been doing harder things with Uncle Jin and Uncle Sheng, and he could do the homework in his head without having to show the work the way his teachers wanted, but even if he got the right answers, they got mad if he didn't show the work.
He filled in a row of multiplication, first putting down the answers, then going back and showing his work. Eventually he glanced back over and Kangwan, wondering what the older boy was working on and if it was any more interesting than what he was stuck doing.

Kangwan followed and sat across the table from him. Small as it was, Kangwan thankfully didn't have to lean down too much to do his work, so he figured he'd be fine for the hour or so they were sitting there. He watched as Taijia pulled out his homework ('So little work...' He thought with a sigh), and pulled out his own math homework, figuring if Taijia needed any help, he'd at least be in the right mindset, not that boy looked like he was struggling. He found the page he needed before checking which questions needed to be done. "You don't seem to have any trouble at all; did you ask about being put in a more advanced math class?" He asked the boy curiously. For him, he was comfortable with the math class he was in, it wasn't too easy, but also on his off days, it wasn't so hard he couldn't stop paying attention for an hour or a day. He had a feeling he definitely wouldn't be able to get through all his homework if Taijia was this fast with everything, but at least the head start and not having to do math would be a plus.

Taijia made an irritated face and said, clearly frustrated by this fact, "I'm already in the advanced math group at school. The teacher keeps telling me I'm too young for my grade as is, but I've seen the stuff the kids older than me are doing and at least it's sort of interesting, like I have think about it more."
He pouted a little bit and said, "Is your math homework more interesting? Can you show it to me since I'm done with mine?"
He paused for a second and said tentatively, "I'll do my social studies reading and the questions for it after."

Kangwan blinked a few times in surprise, muttering a simple "oh..." before looking at his own math homework. "I suppose. Maybe you can even help me." He said, fully joking at the last part. His homework wasn't necessarily hard, especially since math was his last class and it tended to be fresh in his mind still by the time he got to homework. He turned the book so Taijia could look at it. "This could be over your head though," He said, not meaning to make it sound as demeaning as it came out.

Taijia puffed up his cheeks a little bit, bristling just a touch at the last comment, and said, "I won't know if you don't tell me what you're supposed to be doing."
He looked down at Kangwan's paper, pouting just a tiny bit, and looking to see if he could spot something, anything, to prove himself. He didn't know exactly what Kangwan was supposed to be doing, but near the end of one of the problems was something that he did recognize, and though he didn't entirely know how Kangwan had gotten to the division problem, he did know that the answer was wrong. He pointed to it and said, pout coming through a bit in his voice, "You divided wrong here."
He looked up at Kangwan out of the corner of his eye, trying to judge how the older boy would react, and whether or not he would actually explain the math. He went back to staring at the page, starting to notice a pattern and then said, "Does the letter stand for a number you're trying to find so you have to reverse the other math?"

"Sorry, sorry..." Kangwan replied, laughing off Taijia's indignant response. He waved the boy off, about to explain when he looked at the question Taijia said he did wrong. He looked it over, and sure enough the kid was right. He felt his cheeks heat up, adn went about erasing from that part to his answer. "How silly of me!!" He said, trying to laugh that off as well, but not succeeding as much this time.
He nodded, looking at the directions in his book. "Yeah, something like that. " He said simply, biting his lower lip. He pointed to a formula in his book, "We have to use this formula for it though, and it's a bit confusing..."

Tai stared at the formula. He knew all the parts, since Yunjin had taught him square roots and squares earlier in the year. He stopped pouting, curious again, and asked, "Can you show me one, and then I can try it?"
He fidgeted with his pencil. It looked like Kangwan had gotten through a fair amount of it, but there were still several problems to go. He said, somewhat solemn, "I promise I won't show you what answer I got until you finish the problem too, that way it won't be cheating."
