((Admin Note: The site's location has changed since this thread!!))Kangwan played with the end of his sweater sleeve, peeking in before knocking on Yunjin's office door. " Lin-seonsaengnim?" He called. It had been decided about five days ago to let Kangwan try babysitting for Yunjin's nephew, and Kangwan was excited about it because he liked kids, but now that the day had come, he was a bit more nervous about the idea. He'd spent the week trying to figure out ways to avoid going home. Monday, he spent with Mikkie, who was shaping out to be a good friend. Tuesday, he went to the library. Wednesday, to a cafe. Yesterday he'd been out of money and didn't feel like walking to the library again, so he dealt with going home, and ended up claiming he was going to bed by 6pm because he and his father had gotten into another fight. Despite that, things were slowly starting to look up, and Kangwan could only hope this another good new beginning. Plus, a part of him hoped he'd get to meet the songwriter to his favorite song his band had been given, especially since they seemed similar in more ways than their love for music. He took a breath for motivation, finally making a full appearance in the doorway, giving Yunjin a small upturn of the lips, a somewhat halfhearted smile. Tags: Yunjin Lin

Yunjin looked up when Kangwan said his name, and he smiled at him. He said, "Oh good, I was hoping that you would show up soon. I have to leave to pick Tai up in about five minutes. Feel free to grab a seat or have some of the pastries while I wrap up a few more things."
As he shifted around some papers, some going into his bag beside his laptop, some getting a quick note and going in his outbox, some getting stacked neatly in front of his office computer to be dealt with on Monday, he asked, "How has your week been going? Are classes alright? Are people treating you well?"
Finally, almost exactly five minutes after Kangwan's arrival, he zipped up his bag, stood and stretched a bit, and put on his jacket. He smiled at Kangwan again and said, "Alright, let's go. My car is in the back parking lot."

Kangwan nodded, silently going to the pastries and picking a moon cake to munch on. "Oh, lotus paste this time." He muttered, more to himself, in Korean.
He glanced up as Yunjin began asking him questions. "I'm a little confused, but teachers assured me it's probably more because I came in the middle of the semester than anything." He nodded, "I've made a couple friends, too, though a couple of them apparently do something called middle college?" He spoke the last two words in English, "so I mostly have one friend here on campus." He explained, giving a small, soft smile, "But at least it's a friend here."
He grabbed one more moon cake before shutting the package they were in, following behind Yunjin, once again silent.

Yunjin smiled as Kangwan said that he'd made some friends. Thinking about who he knew of who was doing middle college, which wasn't many people, who would have one friend still mainly on campus, he asked, "Would that be Remi and Levi and Mikkie?"
He grabbed the box of pastries as he headed for the door of his office, locking up behind them before leading the way in the direction of his car. He snagged a sesame and red bean pastry before closing the box so that he wouldn't drop it and said, "I bring in pastries for my upper level Chinese class right before lunch because they are all consistently ravenous, and they have second lunch, and they and I focus better with a little bit of food. I even get to put it on classroom supplies budget because it's cultural."
When he got to his car, he pointed to the front seat and said, "If the set up of the seat is really off from how you like it, you can rearrange it, but it's set up the way Sheng and Hwangjung like it, so if it works for you, we're not going to be in the car long, just to pick Tai up from his dance lesson at the gym and then take him home. The elementary school gets off earlier than the high school, so he's been off for a while, and Sheng took him to the gym from there, but he's got lessons to teach until nearly 9 pm."
Yunjin loaded his stuff into the car, and waited for Kangwan to settle in before he started it up.

Kangwan looked at him in shock, "Yes... actually..." He said, a bit surprised. He wondered for a moment how Yunjin knew, but then remembered he was one of the only teachers Remi had nothing but good things to say, and he guessed maybe that was why.
He got into the passenger's seat and was able to get comfortable quickly, shaking his head, "No, it's fine." He assured the older man, though he felt his short stature by how far away he was from the dashboard. He stretched a bit, a little surprised he couldn't reach the dashboard still, and letting out a sigh. "At this rate, I feel like even Taijia will be taller than me." He muttered, more as a joke than anything.

Yunjin took the back way to get to the gym that avoided all of the worst traffic at that time of day, though they did have to wait a frustratingly long time at one of the intersections. As he drove, he told Kangwan, "I know Remi pretty well, since I teach him music lessons outside of school as well as technically being his high school adviser. And I'm the one who sets up the enrollment for the kids who take classes over at the college, so I've met Levi a few times between that and subbing for math classes before she switched. Also, I've seen you talk to Mikkie at choir, so it was a pretty easy set of conclusions to reach."
Yunjin couldn't help but laugh at Kangwan's comment about everyone being taller than him and said reassuringly, "Tai's actually kind of tiny for his age. He's seven and there are five year olds taller than him. Which makes him look even tinier at school because he's pretty much the youngest in his class. Sheng and Hwangjung are just kind of giants. They're 184 and 186 cm. I don't know what they ate to be that tall, or where it came from, but yeah, on the rare occasion that Hwannie drives and I'm passenger, it's weird."
It wasn't long before they pulled into the parking lot of the gym, and Yunjin got out of the car, saying, "Come along in with me. You might as well meet Sheng, um Sungyong, when I pick Tai up, that way if this ends up being a permanent thing, you've already met."

Kangwan nodded, muttering a simple "ah." He supposed that made sense. He smiled at trying to picture Taijia. He seemed like a really cute kid. Then again, maybe it was just Kangwan's bias because he had also always been the shortest in his classes, even compared to the girls. His eyes widened at the mention of his friend's heights though. "Wow... How even..?" He questioned, puffing out his cheeks a bit, envious. He also found that unfair, his mom had been tall, his dad was tall, his brother was tall, and yet Kangwan was the only one to really like milk in his family, though both and his brother used to eat a lot. Still, his heart panged a bit at remembering his brother and mother, and he shoved the thought from mind.
He stepped out of the car, a bit nervous about going to meet new people, but trying to stay positive. Still, he paused, hesitating a little. "Does Sungyong know Korean?" He asked, hoping that even if he did have to speak English, he could do the basics without his mind failing him.

Yunjin snorted and replied, "I have no idea how they ended up that tall, but my pet theory is that they stole my height. I'm taller than either of their parents, and I never caught either of my own parents, though I am really close in height to my mother. My sister was taller than me too. I mean, I'm not short, I just was always the shortest in my family, and the two of them just suddenly shot up like weeds at fifteen."
Yunjin nodded to Kangwan's question as he led the way inside the gym, angling his way back through to the ice rink with a quick wave of recognition at the person at the desk. He said, "Sungyong is half-Korean, half-Chinese, like me, and he speaks both, though he has a noticeable Chinese accent in Korean."
As he pushed open the door to the rink, he shivered a little bit and said, "Sorry, I'm always startled by how cold it is back here every week. You'd think that I'd expect it by now, since I've only been going to pick Sheng up at ice rinks for nearly fifteen years."
He would have said more, but he was interrupted by a blur of excited seven year old bounding over and throwing his arms around Yunjin's waist. Tai babbled in Korean, "Uncle Jin! I started learning a new dance from Ren today, and it was awesome. He said I did a good job for the first day too, and that my flexibility is getting better!"
Then Tai noticed Kangwan behind Yunjin and quieted, staring up at the older boy wide eyed for a minute before very tentatively continuing in Korean, "Your hair is cool."
Sungyong walked up behind Yunjin then, in his skates still, with guards on over them, but waiting for his next class to start. He gave Yunjin a quick hug and said in Chinese, "Tai's very excited about dance today Jin-ge. Expect to hear about nothing else."
Yunjin responded in Korean so that Kangwan would have some idea what was going on, and gestured to Kangwan as he spoke, "Hey Sheng. This is Kangwan, he's the one I was telling you about who's going to come over and babysit, and Kangwan, this is Sungyong, he's going to be at work for another few hours, but depending on how late you stay, he might show up while you're still there. And if this works out in the future, there's a decent chance that you'll see him pretty often."
Sungyong looked thoughtful for a second and then said, "Oh, you're the one who was from a group that used one of Hwannie's songs. Nice to meet you."
He smiled, and before he could say anything more, a surge of late elementary and middle school aged students started coming in followed by parents, and Sungyong stuttered out, "I'd better get back on the ice."

Kangwan noddeed in understanding, his brother was taller than him, but didn't get that way until near the end of high school, so he hoped his growth spurt was just waiting for something. Still, his mother had been short and his father tall, so he was unsure of what to expect in terms of future growth spurts in general.
Kangwan followed Yunjin into the gym, smiling softly at Yunjin's comment about the cold, but also wrapping his arms around his chest. He recognized the Chinese, but never really had a chance to learn it, except for a few common phrases, so he at best caught only a couple words. He breathed a subconscious, but noticeable, sigh of relief when the conversation was switched to Korean. He straightened up, suddenly nervous about meeting someone new as he bowed quickly, "It's nice to meet you too!" He said, luckily able to keep his tone and volume even.
He finally noticed Taijia, smiling as he tugged at a bit of his bangs, "Thanks." He said simply. The kid was really adorable, and although he seemed hyper, he felt like the two of them had similar personalities. (Still, being able to compare himself to a seven year old wasn't necessarily promising to him.)

Yunjin was relieved that the initial interaction hadn't gone terribly, though he knew that Tai was definitely feeling a little bit tentative. He led the way back out to the car, and as they walked, he told Tai, who was peering around him at Kangwan carefully, "Tai, we're going to see if Kangwan is a good fit as a babysitter for you, OK? He knows how to dance, and he's one of my students at school. I'll be home this evening, but I'm going to be working in my study, OK?"
Tai looked at Kangwan, considering and quiet, for a long time once he had climbed into his seat in the back and carefully buckled himself in. He said tentatively at first, but getting more excited as he went, "You know how to dance? Do you want to watch me practice? Maybe you can show me some dances?"
Yunjin smiled approvingly over at Kangwan, relieved that Tai had basically had the reaction that he expected to that bit of information. It wasn't a long ride back to the house where they were living, and he managed to hit all green lights the entire way there, so it only took a few minutes. He told Kangwan, "Let me know if there is anything that you need help getting settled in with. Tai knows where most things are, but I'll make sure you know where the bathroom and the study are. Tai mostly looks after himself these days, but I would appreciate if you would keep him practicing his Korean, since Sheng and I definitely speak to him more in Chinese, and if you are up for it, some dance stuff. There's a room that we've sort of got set up for him to practice in downstairs."

Kangwan nodded, smiling excitedly, "I do, and sure! We can help each other." He said, adding in the last part as a bit of a joke. Although he hadn't been dubbed the dancer, he wasn't horrible at dancing.
As they got to Yunjin's house, he lingered back a bit, letting the actual tenants go in first before stepping inside. "Nice house." He commented simply. He looked back to Yunjin though when the man started talking to him, nodding intermittently. "Should we play a bit first, or should we do homework first?" He asked, just trying to get an idea on what the rules were about that. Back in Korea, he'd do homework whenever he had the chance, and here he'd do homework when he felt up to it, which was sometimes every day and other times not for a few weeks, so his own homework schedule was lacking at best. A part of him hoped by babysitting, he'd also get a better homework schedule.

Tai looked excitedly over to Yunjin and then at Kangwan and asked, bouncing from foot to foot, "Can we dance first? Can we?"
Yunjin gave him a look, one that he'd learned mostly from being a teacher though Tai occasionally gave him good call to practice it, the one where he knew that the person he was looking at knew that they had something else that we needed to do first. He said, voice still gentle, but also a bit firm, "You just came from dance. I know that you're excited, but homework first, for at least an hour or until all of it is done, then you can dance or play."
Tai pouted a bit and looked pleadingly between Yunjin and Kangwan. Yunjin turned to Kangwan and added, "It might be good if he has some sort of snack before getting started on anything though. He knows where things are in the kitchen, and can have pretty much whatever he decides he wants as a snack. You're welcome to eat something too. There's rice in the rice cooker if either of you want any."
Yunjin ducked out to his study to work on grading papers, leaving Tai with Kangwan, though he wasn't far away. Tai pouted after him for a moment, but then perked up. He grabbed Kangwan's hand, towing the older boy towards the kitchen and said cheerfully, "Uncle Hwannie got the spicy kind of kimchi the other day, so there's that and rice for a snack. I don't have much homework today, so I bet I can finish it in less than an hour. It's easy. It's just multiplication and some reading, and Uncle Jin taught me how to do all that in kindergarten."

"Kimchi and rice? Sounds like a good snack. Or even meal." He said, adding the last sentence more under his breath than the previous ones. "Multiplication, huh? I wish my multiplication was easy enough I was confident I'd finish it in one hour..." He mused, though really it was writing out the problems that tedious, he tended to not have too much trouble with school work in general. "So, as soon as the hour's over, we can go dance for a bit, okay? But an hour sounds like a good amount to let the food digest, too." He said, nodding to his own rule (or, rather technically, Yunjin's rule). "And I'll be doing homework too, so you won't have to suffer alone."

Taijia looked at Kangwan curiously, not used to people who seemed like adults to him having homework, though he had some memory of Sungyong and Hwangjung finishing up their degrees. They'd mostly spent a lot of time sitting at computers and arguing with them, though he knew that they'd had classes, but it had been different. He asked, voice full of fascination, "Is your homework actually interesting? Because you're older. Can you show me? I promise I'll do mine fast if you explain yours to me."
He nodded emphatically with the last statement, letting go of Kangwan's hand as they reached the kitchen and pointing out the rice cooker, "Can you get the rice out please? You're tall enough not to have to use the step stool. The kimchi's where I can reach it."
He turned and very carefully took down two bowls from the cupboard and held them out towards Kangwan so that the older boy could put rice in them.

Kangwan contemplated the question for a moment, a bit confused that the question was even asked. "Um... Sure. I don't see any harm with that." He agreed, giving the boy a simple shrug. He smiled softly, a small chuckle escaping as he nodded, "I will." He said, taking the bowls gently from Taijia's hands. "Thank you." He scooped rice into the bowls, filling them just enough so if they put kimchi on top it wouldn't spill all over. "Here we go."
