After signing a teaching contract (ongoing!) for fifth grade for the next year at Cedar Beach Elementary School, Wooram had gotten a motel room right on the bus line to the main apartment complex in Cedar Beach for a week in plans to try to find somewhere to live. He had his computer up, and slowly figured out formulating a Craigslist seeking roommate post. He'd looked over the listing, and he could probably afford a one bedroom in Ocean Breeze Apartments, but it would be tight, and honestly, he'd rather not live alone, not that he'd mention that to his parents, if they asked, he'd say that he'd found a roommate for saving money reasons, he hoped they just didn't ask. They'd probably not approve of a Craigslist roommate either.
He took a while typing up an ad and looked over it carefully before posting it, wondering if anyone would actually be interested in replying to it.
Title: Seeking Roommate for Ocean Breeze Apartments 2bd/2ba Cedar Beach WA
I'm looking for someone to split rent 50-50 for a 2 bed 2 bath apartment at the Ocean Breeze Apartments in Cedar Beach, WA. I'd potentially be open to other 2 bed 2 bath apartments within walking distance of Cedar Beach Elementary School and a bus stop.
Who I'm Looking For: - Open minded - Tidy and willing to split chores - Not going to be super loud without warning or very often - 20s-30s working adult (though I'm flexible! as long as you can pay your own rent)
About me: - Korean American - Early-mid 20s - Elementary school teacher - Like reading, music, (not too hard) hikes
I'd love to have a roommate I can make friends with! But having compatible lifestyles seems like the most important part.
Email me through the listing, and we can arrange meeting up to talk and see if we'd be a good fit!
- Wooram

Raein was browsing Craiglist again to see if any new roommate want ads popped up. His friend had mentioned that would the best way to find something affordable. But so far, none of them were near enough or he'd send the ad to his friend to check over for sketchiness because, in his friend's words, he was untrustworthy at judging that sort of thing. He saw an ad specifically for Cedar Beach, and his breath hitched. He read through the ad. It seemed legit. He huffed, making a mocking face as he muttered, "you don't know how to spot good ads from bad ones... Aish I can do it myself!" He half yelled at his friend, who would definitely not hear him all the way in Olympia. He moved some hair out of his eyes and carefully sent an email, wondering how people typically started emails from things like Craigslist Ads. He debated for a second looking up "Craigslist response etiquette" before deciding that was stupid and just winging it.
'To: 23445687867432c5768@craigslist.com From: raein29@gmail.com Subject: Seeking Roommate for Ocean Breeze Apartments 2bd/2ba Cedar Beach WA
Hello. I'm also looking for a roommate in the Cedar Beach area, and I'm willing to split 50/50 for a two bedroom at Ocean Breeze.
A bit about me: - also Korean American - also early-mid 20s - middle school teacher - like reading, hikes, exploring, cooking
I hope to hear back from you soon!'
It was only after he hit send he realized he forgot to put his name anywhere in the email. "Oops." He muttered to himself. He moved further up on the bed so he could charge his phone, scrolling Facebook while waiting for a reply, wondering if he'd even get one. He had sent an email to another person advertising a room, but it was going on a week since he'd heard from them, so he'd given up hope. It'd be cool to room with another teacher, though.
((OOC: Aish is Korean for like, "damn" or "ugh."))

Wooram was startled to get a reply back so quickly. He'd been considering going for a walk to stop checking for replies every three seconds, but it looked like it had actually paid off. He smiled as he read the reply. There wasn't a lot in it, but it seemed promising, and another teacher!
He quickly pulled up the yelp listings for the area and spotted a little cafe that seemed to have decent tea. He replied to the email:
Hi! It's great to have another teacher respond!
If you're free sometime today and are in the Cedar Beach area right now, do you want to meet up and chat and see if we'd be a good fit? There's a boba tea shop near the schools that I could be at in the next 15 minutes or so, and I'm free all afternoon.

He realized as he sent it that he'd left his normal signature on, only deleting out his family name, but he shrugged. Someone who didn't want to room with him because of that was not someone he wanted to room with. He did hope he'd hear back from the other teacher.

Raein was pleasantly surprised when he got a reply back pretty quickly, reading over it and then gong to maps to see how far he was from the boba tea shop this Wooram had mentioned. He went back to the email,
'Yeah, I'm free today. GPS says that boba shop is super close to where I'm staying, so maybe we can meet up in,' he paused and look at his clothes, making a face. He was still in his pajamas that he'd been wearing since yesterday night, 'about an hour?' That would give him time to get in a quick shower and choose clothes that weren't... a tank top and pajama pants.
It was only after he hit send, again, that he noticed, again he forgot to put his name in the email, running his hands through his hair. He was already in the shower when his mind seemed to process the signature that was attached to Wooram's email. It reminded him of his favorite teacher from high school. He wondered if Wooram was queer or just supportive. He convinced himself it was probably the latter, but even then, that was good. Maybe one day he'd actually get the nerve to come out to someone. Sure, it'd be weird if it was his roommate he'd only known for a short amount of time, but it was still someone.
He got out of the shower and dried off, looking at the email and ad again. It didn't say anything about LGBTQ+ on the ad, so he probably was just supportive. Raein always got his hopes up too quickly, and then was always too scared to actually say anything. Despite being far away from the town now, he couldn't help but wonder what could happen to him if people knew, and it still scared him. Perhaps living with someone he knew was accepting would help to ease that. Perhaps.
He realized he'd been lost in thought too long, and now only had about 20 minutes left to get ready. He let out a short screech as he realized the time and went to brush his hair, then pulled out a nice, new v-neck shirt and new jeans his friends had bought him just before he moved into the motel. He hadn't had the chance to wear either item yet, so he double checked for tags he missed taking off before putting them on. He brushed his teeth quickly and double checked he had the room key and his wallet and phone before heading out.

Wooram was startled by just how fast the reply came back, read it over and quickly replied,
That sounds great. See you in about an hour. I'll attach a selca so that you can recognize me.
- Wooram Kindness - Peace - Equality - Love - Inclusion - Hope - Diversity
He got himself ready, though he was already dressed for the day since he'd had to go out and get food earlier in the morning. He wanted to have a kitchen and the space to prepare his own food again.
Even though it was a little early, he headed over to the boba tea shop, figuring he could get a plain green tea and sit and poke at the internet on his phone until his potential roommate got there.

Raein was just out the door when he finally noticed there was a new email notification. He opened it and brought a hand to his face, wondering if he was blushing or if the sun just hit his face. "Oh no he's so cute." He muttered to himself. He started walking, shaking his arms as if that would shake away his insecurities and flustered feelings. "What the hell is a selca?" He wondered as an after thought. He got more curious the longer he thought over the email. "Is it some... city slang I don't know?" He wondered to himself, lost in thought but luckily auto-using GPS to get him to his destination.
The boba tea shop was slightly crowded, but not to an overwhelming amount. He looked around for the cute boy in the picture from outside as he headed in, finally spotting him at one of the tables. He took a few deep breaths before practically squeaking, "hi," he cleared his throat, and his voice almost went back to normal, "um, are you Wooram? I'm the one from the Craiglist ad. My name is Raven. Or Raein, whichever." He babbled, realizing this could be his chance to get more use from his Korean name.

Wooram wasn't paying too much attention to the people passing by him, scrolling through tumblr on his phone. He was very slightly startled when someone said his name, but he was half listening for it too, knowing that his potential roommate should be showing up soon. He looked up, and then more up, the other young man was tall. Also very pretty. Wooram had a moment of wondering if the other young man's hair was as soft as it looked.
He smiled though and said, "Yeah, that's me, I'm Wooram. It's nice to meet you Raein. I cam over early so I've already got a drink. Do you want to get something and join me and we can talk about possibly rooming together?"
He was pretty sure that Raein had said an American name first, but he'd not quite caught it, and he figured that it was better to use the Korean name anyhow if it was offered. He smiled, hoping that they were off to a good start, and not quite sure what to say next took a sip of his plain green tea. He was glad that this place had decent tea because he didn't trust adding things to tea most of the time unless it was under very controlled circumstances.

"Um... Yeah, likewise. Um, nice to meet you as well." Jeez, was this what he got for knowing the same people since preschool? A severe lack of social skills? Raein cleared his throat again and nodded, "I uh... Yeah, I'd like to get a drink..." He paused, looking at the menu, then glanced back to Wooram. "Do you have any um... suggestions?" He'd only had boba tea once before, and his friend had ordered for him, so he couldn't remember what he got. Whatever it was, it had been good, though. He was still warming up to tapioca pearls, but they weren't bad.

Wooram tried to smile reassuringly, Raein seemed nervous, which was actually kind of reassuring. Wooram was nervous too, just apparently a little better at staying outwardly calm. He said softly, "I don't entirely know what to recommend because I can't actually drink most of the things on the menu. Friends say that just normal milk tea is really good, or Thai iced tea, or taro which does look really cool because it's purple."
He figured that if this looked promising, he should probably go ahead and explain a little bit on the health things front, so he felt a little bit less weird about mentioning that he couldn't have most of it right off the bat. It wasn't entirely a comfortable topic though. He shrugged and said, "If you've not had boba tea much, maybe try the plain milk tea or a fruit or flavor that you usually like in things?"
He was itching to actually start chatting with Raein and find out more about him to see if they'd be a decent fit. It was a little bit distracting, and maybe a tiny bit worrying that Raein was definitely cute, but Wooram figured that it wasn't a bad thing in a roommate, it was value neutral, just a thing.

"Oh... I see." Raein listened to Wooram's suggestions and thought it over. He knew what his friend had ordered wasn't purple, so at least he could eliminate one things off the menu. Perhaps his friend had ordered him normal milk tea, as he couldn't recall the drink having a particularly fruity flavor to it. By the time he got up to the front of the line he hadn't fully committed to one drink, and had to pause as he was ordering before finally deciding on a strawberry milk tea with... whatever strawberry popping bubbles were.
He waited near the pick up counter until his drink was done, and he tried it curiously before deciding it was good, if not a bit sweet, but he didn't care because he wanted to talk with Wooram more. He was even cuter in person, though, and it was making him flustered. That, and forgetting how to actually meet someone considering the last time he did so was probably his group of friends now living in Olympia. 'Get yourself together, it's not like high school was really that long ago!' He scolded himself mentally, pulling out the chair across from Wooram and sitting down in a hopefully casual way.

Wooram watched Raein carefully as the other young man made his way across the shop and got his drink. He smiled at Raein as he was coming back. Raein was definitely obviously nervous, and he wanted to soothe the other young man's nerves if he could.
He smiled a little bit more fully as Raein sat down and said, "So, um, are you new to the Cedar Beach area too? I was born in Korea, but I've lived in Washington since I was ten. I was up in Friday Harbor, in the San Juans when we moved here cause my dad works there, and then college and a little after I was in Bellingham, and now they've hired me to teach fifth grade for next year on an ongoing contract at Cedar Beach Elementary, so I need a place to live close enough to walk to the school or at least take the bus easily."
He smiled hopefully. He wanted this to work out so that they could go ahead and get to the part where they were considering an apartment and he would have a kitchen again. But he also wanted to make sure that they were a good fit.

Raein sipped on his drink while Wooram talked, happy the other man was willing to start up conversation. "Um..." He began, finally taking his lips off his straw and to speak. "Yeah, I'm new. I um... Grew up in an extremely small town about ten miles south of the Canadian border in Eastern Washington, then moved to Olympia to live with some friends while I did my student teaching, then got a job here. I moved up about two or three weeks ago." He explained. He found it kind of odd that Wooram mentioned he needed to be in a place where he could walk or take the bus to work, but at least knew well enough not to ask about it yet. "Uh, I've never been to Korea, but my grandparents spoke Korean with me, so I'm fairly comfortable with speaking it." He added.

Wooram slipped into Korean comfortably, but knew that they'd probably switch back to English soon enough. He said, slightly laughing through his words, voice fully and thickly in the Jeju dialect, "I'm perfectly comfortable in Korean, but I'm from Jeju-do, so honestly we might have an easier time in English."
He switched back to English and said, "Honestly, these days, I'm completely comfortable in English though. Didn't get that way until I was in high school. I've grown up in small towns all my life, but from what I know of that area, your small town was way smaller than my small towns. Plus I've taken trips into Seattle regularly since I've lived here, and Jeju-do and Friday Harbor both fill up with tourists during the season."
He smiled and propped his hand on his chin, looking somewhat up across the table at Raein, and he asked, "What sorts of things are you looking for in a living arrangement?"

Raein's eyes widened as he heard Wooram speak what he was fairly sure was Korean, but he felt like he didn't understand any of it. He'd only ever heard his family speak Korean, and if not them, then traditional singers from his grandparent's cassette tapes and CDs. "Uhh... yeah let's stick with English." He replied quickly, looking away and fidgeting a bit.
"If it weren't for my grandparents, I'd probably know very little Korean. My mom is from Korea, but since we were in such a small town, she didn't force me or my brother to learn." He fidgeted a little more, playing with the lid of his cup. "But when I started becoming bilingual, I think she was actually really happy. So I kept at it."
He thought over the last question before shrugging, "I admittedly haven't thought much of it, for looking for a roommate... Uh, I guess someone who's clean? And not too loud." He thought over what annoyed him when he lived with his friends. "I guess someone who doesn't like, leave their dishes in the sink for like a week, or..." His face hardened a bit, "I'd really rather not cook. My family runs a restaurant, and when I was in Olympia I cooked and cleaned in exchange for not paying rent since it was during my student teaching. I'm sick of cooking. I mean I'll cook sometimes, or for myself, but I'd really like to not be the sole cook."

Wooram saw the look of panic as Raein was reacting to him speaking in Korean, and he started to giggle, hands coming up to cover his face, and he said in English, "Oh no, I'm sorry. To be clear, I can manage in more standard Korean, but I have a really thick Jeju accent unless I try really hard because I lived out in the countryside on Jeju-do, and I came here at the end of elementary school, so I never really had to do much of anything in Korean outside of Jeju-do. I'll stick to English or take the time to speak in clearer to you Korean. I promise."
He shook off the laughter, smiling at Raein and said, "Some people actually even consider the Jeju dialect a distinct but closely related language, so like, don't worry about it, I know that it's hard to understand if you're not used to it. It's really cool that you managed to be bilingual despite not getting the push to be from your parents."
Wooram nodded through Raein's explanation. He said, "That all sounds good to me. I like to keep a clean space, but not have to do all the cleaning. I'd probably want to draw up some sort of chores schedule, either so we rotated through chores so no one had to do disliked chores too many times in a row, or so that we divided chores up by preference and capability."
He sighed and said, "And for cooking, I'd rather cook for myself. I don't really trust a lot of other people cooking for me because there's a lot of dietary needs to keep straight, and like, I'm willing to let people try once we know each other and they have a pretty comprehensive list, but I'd also end up hovering over the entire process the first several times. If you ever want to cook together though, it can definitely be more fun to cook in company."
He paused thoughtfully for a moment and added, "I'd really love to have a roommate that I can hang out with and talk to some, but I'm a pretty quiet and introverted person who definitely likes to have my own time in my own space. So I guess there's a balance there of wanting to hang out, but also wanting to know that I'd be able to get quiet time and not be bothering someone by not always being up for being social."
He gave Raein a questioning look, trying to gauge what the other young man thought of what he'd said.
