((TW: Mention of child abuse and neglect))
Face Claim: Pil Seojin/Bì Shūjìn (Bii)
Jesse is of average height at 5'8" (173 cm) and weighs 170 lbs (77kg). He looks neither skinny nor overweight, and doesn't appear to have much in the way of muscles, though he's stronger than he looks. His hair is naturally black, but he keeps it dyed to an auburn color. He has big, dark eyes that show his kind nature. He has a few freckles here and there, the most obvious ones above his eyebrow and then on his chin. He has a few scars, mainly from working in a cafe, others from back when he was a kid, and one from a surgery he got to remove his appendix when he was ten. He has one piercing in each ear lobe, and no tattoos. He's been thinking of getting a falcon tattoo for his son (part of Rhys' Asian names mean "falcon"), but hasn't yet fully committed to the idea.
His style of dress is usually somewhere between casual and formal, not quite dressed up enough for white tie events, but would look out of place at say, a sporting event. He prefers dark jeans, button downs, and sweater vests to more casual wear, though on days he only plans to work around the house, he can be seen in shorts and tank tops or t-shirts.
Jesse is introverted and thinks a lot more than he speaks. He listens well but doesn't offer advice as readily, and is usually the first to ask someone if they actually want the advice he may have or were just venting. He cares a great deal about his son, and his staff has learned Jesse will, and has, dropped everything if Rhys needs help. He's not quick to make friends, usually keeping people "acquaintance-zoned" long after the other person thinks they're good friends. He doesn't really know the reason for this, though he suspects it's his ex's fault.
He likes spending time with his son, coffee, watching movies, animals, and visiting museums and art galleries. He can make some mean latte art. He also enjoys hiking, biking, playing drums, guitar, piano, and also likes to draw and paint occasionally. He loves his cafe and it's obvious how much he cares for it to almost anyone. He was at first nervous about becoming a boss, but he's grown to view his employees as family (There's only like... ten of them. And he treats them as such - after he started making a solid profit, he bumped their pay to well above minimum wage and introduced health care benefits, as well as a bonus for the employees who stuck with him through the rough beginnings of starting a business).
He dislikes his ex, and people who, for whatever reason, try to justify child abuse or neglect. He understood his ex had post-partum depression, but if she knew she wouldn't be okay enough to care for him, and that seemed to be the case, she shouldn't have taken priority custody over their son. He also dislikes rude customers, for a variety of reasons, and is quick to stick up for his employees over the customer. He also doesn't like cheap coffee, Starbucks, and math.
His hobbies pretty much all involve coffee in some way, shape, or form. He likes trying new cafes (especially since it means he can help support another small business), learning about coffee, practicing latte art, or sharing his coffee with friends, the latter of which was more common when he lived in the same state as his friends. He loves spending as much time as possible with Rhys, and will push anything to the wayside if Rhys asks him. A random hobby he has, that he picked up from his dad, is woodwork, though now that he's living in an apartment he doesn't get to do it as often. He definitely had a blast when designing his cafe, though.
His goal was to open a cafe and move to Washington, so he's happily living his dream at the moment. Having a bit more money secured would be nice, but he knows businesses take time and so he's anxiously playing the waiting game. His next goal is to buy a house to call his forever home, but that is still a long term goal.
MOTHER
Name: Sara Wu (nee Kim)
Birth Year: 1955
Occupation: Retired (Previously a secretary)
Feelings Toward: She always babied him, even as an adult. While he occasionally misses the doting and attention, Jesse often got frustrated with her constantly viewing him as a child. He does miss the help she would provide with raising Rhys.
FATHER
Name: Robert Fènchéng Wu
Birth Year: 1955
Occupation: Semi-Retired Immigration Lawyer
Feelings Toward: He was hardly home as Jesse was growing up, which led to some resentment when he was a teen. However, now that he's older, he truly understands the good his dad did for so many families. Even though his father went into retirement at 60, he came out of retirement to help families through the current political climate, and Jesse is very proud of him for it.
OLDER SISTER
Name: Jenna Jae Wu
Birth Year: 1980
Occupation: Doctor
Feelings Toward: Jesse's older sister was... exactly what one would expect from an older sister. She took care of him and protected him and in the same breath she'd tease him. They get along fine now, but still have definite sibling energy about them.
SON
Name: Rhys Hayako Wu (alternative names: Zǎozi, Maerin)
Birth Year: May 12, 2013
Occupation: Elementary School Student (5th grade for 23-24 school year)
Feelings Toward: Loves him and would do anything for him. He loved that between him and his ex's native languages Rhys was multilingual, and he's trying to keep that up, but doesn't know enough Japanese to help him.
EX-GIRLFRIEND
Name: Reina Sako
Birth Year: 1985
Occupation: Police Officer
Feelings Toward: Sadness, dislike, regret. Lots of mixed feelings, he really wishes their path didn't go the way it went, but it's not like he can, or is willing, to turn back.
Jesse was born to a second-generation Korean-American and a first-generation Chinese-American in Nevada, preceded by a sister five years older than him. He had a fairly average upper-middle-class childhood, and was interested in various sports, instruments, and hobbies as he grew up. He can still play piano, drums, and guitar, and enjoys hiking and biking, as well as other hobbies such as painting, drawing, and photography.
When Jesse graduated high school, he went to college like he was told, but got through a semester before telling his parents college wasn't "for him." They were upset, but as their daughter was in graduate school and headed to medical school, they eventually agreed to let him quit. Despite quitting, Jesse had gotten a job on campus at the bookstore, and so he still spent a lot of time at college even though he was no longer attending. He oftentimes would check out textbooks that seemed interesting and would read them on his own time, which he argues should really count for something. It was while he was working in the bookstore he met Reina, who was in her last year of school. At first it was just a casual encounter, but then she began showing up more often, until eventually she asked him on a date.
They hit it off. Within a year, they had moved in together into a small one bedroom apartment, and were living happily. After two years, he proposed. Then, they started getting into small fights. She assumed his parents would pay for the wedding since they were better off than her parents, and she was planning an elaborate, hundreds of dollar-style wedding. When he explained to her that a lot of his dad's work was pro bono, aka free of charge, and his family would have barely had enough to support both children going to college, she said he was still privileged and his parents should pay. Eventually, after a talk with their families, his parents agreed to pay for the wedding, but it couldn't be quite so elaborate. (It was around this time he did a lot of research to learn about privilege, and now has a better understanding that he did, in fact, lead a fairly comfortable life growing up, and he works hard to know his place and return the favor when he can).
Their marriage ended up getting pushed back multiple times for various reasons, to the point that, when they welcomed Rhys into their life at 28, they still hadn't been married. Jesse kept insisting, especially while she was pregnant, that they could get legally married now and have the ceremony later, but she refused. Her stubbornness should have tipped him off something was strange with her. After the birth of their son, Jesse was forced to take care of him alone while Reina dealt with post-partum depression, and she couldn't even look at her child, let alone care for him. Since Jesse had to care for his son and fiancee, he lost his job, and eventually they lost their apartment, despite his parents trying to help him keep a roof over their heads. He moved back in with his parents while his fiancee and Rhys moved back in with hers. He reluctantly agreed to let her have their son during the week, and then he'd get him over the weekend. It took one visitation rotation to notice something was wrong with Rhys when he got his son and the boy was malnourished and bruised. He took pictures, and had his dad help him contact a lawyer that could help him get solo custody over his child. Come Monday, he refused to hand Rhys over to his fiancee, and told them they were done. Naturally, she threw a fit. To this day, he doesn't know if the abuse was at the hands of his ex, or her parents. Luckily, from what he can tell, Rhys doesn't remember the abuse, and it didn't seem to affect him developmentally (Rhys is rather shy and nervous when meeting new people, but it could be argued he picked it up from his dad, who is also rather introverted). Right before the court process began, the lawyer recommended he get a job again to look better to the courts, and his mom agreed to take care of Rhys while he worked. He ended up working at a local coffee shop, and fell in love with the job.
In 2018, as the court proceedings came to a close and Jesse was granted full custody, he decided it was time to get out of there. With one final bit of monetary assistance from his parents, he put a down payment on a small vacant building in Washington, a place he visited with his family as a child and fell in love with, and began the process of having a cafe built. Once it was completed in mid-2019, he bid his family goodbye, and he and Rhys took the trip to their new home. They've lived here for a couple years now, and although at first it was lonely, and a bit rough as the cafe was taking off, Jesse has now garnered enough business he has some money left over to spoil his son or have a bit of his own fun these days.
