Sungyong laughed a little at the joke and said, "That sounds great. I hope that your daughter really enjoys the class."
He grabbed one more piece of paper, this one a brochure, and said, "Before I forget, if you want to look into it, this has the information about the adult classes, including that adult crash course I mentioned before. That one never fills up, so can always register day of if you decide you want to."
He glanced at the clock and said, "Yeah, I've definitely got enough time to show you over there and introduce you to the people who work there. Depending on how long you want to talk to them, I might have to duck out, but if you wanted to see an advanced session, the most advanced session here, in session, you could come watch for a bit after. The lobby's always open during practices, and there are definitely people who like to watch Liz practice and see what pretty much the top of the field looks like."
He stood up again, wincing a bit as his knee popped audibly and made a mental note that today was not a day for doing jumps himself. Liz got that, and thankfully, she was the TA for his more advanced classes later in the afternoon and he could rely on her to do demonstrations when he needed her to.

Adriel took the brochure, "yeah, thanks for the info, and the pity laugh. I understand if you have to duck out."
He winced a little at the pop, "are you okay?" he asked, unable to keep it to himself anymore. "If you need to stay off that leg for a while I can go find the daycare on my own," he offered, trying to put the other man at ease.
"You've done more than enough with explaining all this stuff for me and saving me earlier. I really appreciate your help Sungyong." He stood up and debated offering his hand again, but decided against it based on their earlier interaction.

Sungyong glared down at his own knee. Then he shook his head and said, "No walking it off helps. It's an old injury, dislocated it coming down wrong from a big jump in practice when I was sixteen and ended my competitive career. It doesn't like when I sit down sometimes."
He didn't love talking about the injury, but he'd gotten better over the years at just putting it out there when it was actually relevant. Plus, it had been in a couple of the interviews that he'd done alongside Liz in the past few years, so if anyone looked him up, and plenty of parents did, they'd find out about the injury soon enough.
He headed for the door, glad that his knee didn't decide to provide further audio track to their discussion and said, "The daycare is over this way. They've got some fun stuff for kids and a good staff."
He led the way through the lobby, waving at a few more students and their parents in passing.

Adriel nodded, knowing that talking about a career ending injury was probably not anyone's favorite topic, so he let it drop. He figured if Sungyong wanted to say more about it, he would.
He followed the younger man out towards the daycare. The more he saw Sungyong's friendly interactions with parents and students, the better he felt about signing Rochelle up for the classes. "It says a lot about you and your team as teachers," he said with a smile, gesturing to the students and parents they'd just passed.

Sungyong smiled a little bit at the praise and he replied, "I like working with kids, and I've got a fair bit of practice. I helped take care of my... nephew since I was 18 and he was a little toddler. I've been working with some of the students here for years at this point. I pretty much only teach kids classes and private students. I let other teachers deal with the adult classes."
He grinned a little sheepishly and added, "I honestly don't know a lot of the parents all that well. I've probably talked to you more just today than I've talked to some of the ones that have had students coming here for a couple of years now. I know my private students' parents OK for the most part."
He was generally pretty shy and reluctant to talk to other adults. Kids were fine though, and he missed Tai enough that it was nice to have all his students around, even if none of them quite filled that sort of role to the same degree.
It didn't take that long to make his way over to where the daycare was. He was glad to see that it wasn't all that busy when he led Adriel in and waved over the head daycare teacher, taking a moment to place her name. He said, tone professional, "Hey Lauren, this is Adriel, he's just signed his daughter up for figure skating classes, and he wanted to see what the daycare was like before deciding if it would be a good fit if she ever needs to stay late."
He turned to glance at Adriel to see how this would go.

"Then I'm honored," Adriel said, a little curious why Sungyong didn't care for speaking with adults all that much, but it didn't raise any flags for him. He knew how people usually viewed adult men who interacted regularly with children: as predators. Being 6'5 and muscular had never helped much either. Single mothers... unfortunately, they'd helped.
He was always labeled as "gentle" and "caring" and "sensitive" which he was, just not in the, 'want to sleep with the single mothers' kind of way.
"Hello Lauren, nice to meet you," he said, extending his hand.
She shook his hand and greeted him. "How old is your daughter? You must be very excited for her to start skating!"
Adriel smiled, "She's six and yes, I am." He jumped right into his questions, "I wanted to know what your hours were and what sort of activities you do? How old are the other kids usually and do you have a consistent group of kids?"
Lauren patiently answered all of his questions to his satisfaction and with complete professionalism.
"Thank you so much for all your help," he said to her, turning back to see if Sungyong had stayed during his inquiry.

Sungyong was glancing at the time, just thinking that he might need to head back when Adriel finished up his discussion with Lauren. He smiled a little bit, waved at Lauren, and said, "You've got good timing, I was about to have to head back."
He turned to leave the daycare and head back towards the rink, fortunately, moving around some had loosened up his knee a little bit he could tell today was just not a great knee day. He said, "I've got to go get my skates on and get on the ice pretty shortly, but we've got enough time to finish that last bit of paperwork, and if you want to see some upper level skating in action, after that, you can."
He added, "And you can definitely change your preferences on things on the paperwork as needed if something changes."

Adriel followed Sungyong back to the office, "yeah, I'll finish up the paperwork if that's okay. I can finish filling it out out there," he said pointing toward where some other parents were sitting. "That way you can get ready without me being in your way."
He gathered the paperwork he'd been filling out, "shall I?" he pointed again.

Sungyong nodded when Adriel pointed out a spot. He said, "Seems like a plan, and it will give you a chance to meet some of the other parents."
He veered off to the office where he'd left his skates, grabbing them and heading out to one of the taller benches near the rink to quickly get his skates on. People were starting to come off the ice from the free session, though it had a few more minutes until it ended. He nodded approvingly, noting that LIz was helping to guide some younger kids off and checking on people who seemed like they might need help. She'd always been a good ice monitor.
With a few minutes until he needed to be on the ice, with his skates on, he stopped by where Adriel had gone to fill out his paperwork and said, "If you're ready for it to be filed, I can tuck it away before I head out on the ice."
He gave Liz a wave as the speakers announced the two minute warning for the end of the free session.

Adriel had taken a few more minutes to fill out the forms but was finished with them when Sungyong came looking for them. "Thanks for all your help," he said with a smile as he handed over the forms.
He waved and headed into the seats, hoping to chat with some other parents about their experiences with the lessons. He was still up in the air about getting on the ice himself, but he was pretty sure Rochelle would make that decision for him.

Sungyong smiled at Adriel and said, "Excellent. I'll got get these filed. I hope that you enjoy chatting with other parents and getting to see some advanced skating."
He ducked back into the office for a moment, tucking the forms into the packet for Adriel's daughter so that they could be processed later that afternoon. Then he headed to the rink itself.
He took off the blade guards that he'd been walking around on, setting them down on the barrier so that he could retrieve them easily later and took off across the ice, skating a few steps forward before swapping to backwards so that he could get warm and get a good feel for the ice that day. Liz joined him on his laps and asked, "New parent signing a kid up?"
Sungyong nodded and said, "Yeah, new kid for the Wednesday beginner's class starting next week. I saw you doing spins earlier."
She nodded and said, "I was working on that new combination spin. It's starting to feel more natural."
He was pleased, and the two of them drifted into companionable silence until the warm-up was completed. He told her, "You've got a bit of an audience today. Do you want to do a run through of your short program and then work on jumps?"
She nodded, handing him her music player, and he went to plug it in to the sound system. They didn't have it turned up very loud. It wasn't noisy enough in the rink, but her music, an interesting instrumentation of Firebird, was easy enough to hear as he started it once she'd taken her starting position.
Sungyong was proud of this choreography. The two of them had worked on it together, and it made good use of how huge her triple lutz-triple loop combo had gotten by placing it on one of the sudden rises in the music. She was right, the combo spin was starting to look better. She'd struggled getting the movement to go smoothly from a sit spin to a layback at first, and Sungyong had debated suggesting that they switch it, but now that it was actually coming together, the range of movement it presented made it much more visually interesting. He clapped for a moment and gave her a thumbs up as she finished and said, "That's looking good, but your flip edge is still a little wonky. We should run that first probably."
They spent the next fifteen minutes drilling Liz's jumps, starting with the flip and moving on to the various other solo and combination jumps that she used in her programs. After her small growth spurt the previous season, it was good to see her jumps getting back to being fully stable again. The growth spurt had given her the extra little bit of strength needed for her lutz to start actually looking really good though.
Once that wound down, they switched to footwork, and Sungyong looked over to their audience, curious to see who had stuck around. There were of course a lot of the students who liked to watch Liz practice, some of whom were clearly aspiring to actually join her in the more advanced competitive levels eventually. This was only a thirty minute training session, though they'd spend more time later, and Liz would be on and off the ice all afternoon.
Soon enough, after Liz and Sungyong had worked through some of her footwork sequences to wind down, the zamboni driver was waving from the side, and the two of them cleared off the ice so that he could resurface it before the next public session started. The rest of Sungyong's classes for the afternoon would be after the second open session. He told Liz, "I'm probably going to need you to demo jumps for the advanced class today, my knee was complaining."
She nodded, used to this turn of events, and said, "I'm going to go work on my homework during the resurface."
He looked around to see if there was anyone who needed to talk to him, and most of all to see if Adriel was still there, since he was curious if the man had stuck around.

Adriel had started chatting with some of the other parents, especially those with younger kids in tow. He figured those kids would either be potential friends for Rochelle or potential students in his class if they were younger. He asked about the classes and how the kids and parents felt about them and was feeling very good about his decision.
He had been chatting with one mom in particular who had a six year old boy with her, when she hurriedly hushed him and pointed to the rink.
Adriel redirected his attention and was impressed with Liz's skill. He watched the interaction between her and Sungyong and was happy to see them getting along so well. Sungyong seemed much more comfortable on the ice and with someone younger. He also seemed to know what he was doing and was very patient and kind.
He looked down at the list of required and suggested supplies, noting the difference between the two and planning his next few days around getting the required equipment so Rochelle would be ready for Wednesday.

Sungyong made his way over to where Adriel had been watching, glad that the other man had stuck around. There was a small part of him that felt like he'd rushed Adriel through the registration process, but the other man had seemed enthusiastic. That he'd stuck around to watch was a good sign on that front.
He greeted a few of the kids who were watching the zamboni smooth the ice excitedly while they waited for the ice to open again. He also nodded to a few parents on his way.
When he got there, he asked, curious, "What did you think?"

Adriel grinned at the approaching Sungyong and stood up, respectfully. "That was impressive, she's very talented and you look like you were born for the ice," he said.
He waved as some the the parents he'd been chatting to started to clear off, "and everyone seems really nice. I'm overall very impressed with the facility and the rink and daycare staff." He made sure to not mention the front desk staff and just hoped that girl was a fluke.

Sungyong was relieved that clearly everything else had gone well after what had to have not been a great first impression of the facility at the front desk. He shook his head at the comment of looking like was born for it and said, "I promise, it's just a lot of practice. I've been skating since I was six and spent about forty hours a week on the ice as a teenager."
He added, "I'm glad that everyone has seemed friendly at the rink. That's the type of environment that we try to promote."
He wasn't entirely sure what else to say, but realized that there were definitely some of the parents around who had done the adult crash course and made a point of skating with their kids at least some of the time. He asked, "Did you get a chance to talk to any of the other parents about skating with their kids?"
