Face Claim: Đoàn Thế Lân (Grey-D)
Yang is not particularly tall, at 164 cm / 5' 4", and he's quite slender and wiry as well. He weighs a fair bit more than he looks like he should because a lot of that is muscle. Both of his ears are pierced twice, and he likes to wear hoops and little dangly earrings most of the time. He keeps his hair mostly long, but shorter on the sides and usually pulls it up in a ponytail or bun.
He has three main scars: one that isn't terribly big but is noticeable because it made a notch in one of his eyebrows, one from his elbow to his wrist on his right arm that is slightly jagged, and one on his back from shoulder to shoulder. He generally doesn't like explaining any of them.
He's got several tattoos, and is working on sleeves. Most of his tattoos are of flowers or plants, but there's a little bit of sea life and birds in there too. Among his tattoos are a sea urchin that was added to the sleeve that is slowly being built up on his right arm that covers part of the scar, and a lotus flower between his shoulder blades. His most recent tattoos are fronds of seaweed that finally finished covering up the scar on his arm, and a small dragon curled around a succulent in a pot in the small of his back.
Pure of heart, dumb of ass, but also stupidly smart: Yang is a bit of a conundrum. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, gets very attached to people, and is a complete idiot about noticing his own feelings about... pretty much anything. He's also absolutely brilliant about pretty much everything else (whether he wants to be or not).
Yang is approximately always spoiling for a fight or argument. He just... likes to argue with most people. Except the people who he is a very specific type of protective close with. And those are generally people that he's willing to fight other people for.
Yang's entirely personality comes out loudly. He's a bit brash and kind of in your face, but it's also kind of a cover for the whole very bad at expressing and understanding his real emotions.
Yang is kind of scared of relationships, all types of relationships (family, friend, romantic) because once he latches on, he latches on hard, and once he feels betrayed, he has a really hard time coming back from it. He can be loud and brash and in your face, but he's also incredibly sweet and caring to people he adores.
He's a good cook, but is very very fond of spicy food to the point that many people can't eat his preferred cooking.
He loves flowers and plants, but he's not very good at taking care of them.
He loves tattoos, and he's in the midst of working on sleeves of (mostly) flowers.
He's queer as hell, and doesn't like letting people forget it.
MOTHER
Name: Thahn Nguyen
Birth Year: 1979
Occupation: Nurse
Feelings Toward: Uncertain, tense. His mother does keep trying to find common ground, but she's also disapproved of most of his choices since he was 13.
FATHER
Name: Tong Du
Birth Year: 1973
Occupation: Accountant
Feelings Toward: Tense, frustrated. His father has kept him at arms length since he came out, and that doesn't seem to be getting better any time soon.
TWIN SISTER
Name: Cam Du
Birth Year: 11/21/2020, technically a day older than him
Occupation: pre-med student
Feelings Toward: They have never gotten along, to the point where they didn't even share a room as infants, and their parents sent them to different private schools for middle and high school because they had so many issues being in the same elementary school. Cam was born before midnight, and she will never let Yang forget it. As adults, they have a slightly better relationship than they once did. Cam has all of their parents' approval.
ROOMMATE / BEST FRIEND
Name: Nika Moon
Birth Year: 1999
Occupation: College Student
Feelings Toward: The sister he wishes he had. They bonded over their immigrant experience and queerness, and Yang is baffled by the fact that people regularly think that they're a couple. She's probably the single person he trusts the most, and he's intensely protective of her, but they are also capable of good natured bickering. They met in their shared math class when Yang was in seventh grade and Nika was in eighth grade.
ROOMMATE / FRIEND
Name: Hyojae Park
Birth Year: 1999
Occupation: Florist
Feelings Toward: Feelings, they are definitely a thing. Yang is intensely protective of Hyojae, kind of desperately wants his approval, and is very nervous of making him nervous (especially since he definitely made him nervous when they first started getting to know each other). Hyojae is dead center in Yang's protective streak, and he got into at least one fight on Hyojae's behalf when they were in high school (and he will attempt to murder Nika if she ever tells Hyojae this). What are feelings, Yang just doesn't know. They met after Hyojae became friends with Nika in high school, while Yang was still a small (even smaller than now) angry eighth grader. (To be clear, Yang absolutely has an enormous crush on Hyojae.)
ROOMMATE / FRIEND
Name: Kayden Shichiro
Birth Year: 1998
Occupation: IT Tech
Feelings Toward: Slightly awkward. They became friends through sharing their only friend (Nika) in middle school, and they just never quite figured each other out. Yang likes Kayden, and cares about him, but in a sort of abstracted way. He is keenly aware of being two years younger than Kayden.
ROOMMATE / FRIEND
Name: Lore Chesire
Birth Year: 1999
Occupation: Student / Paraeducator
Feelings Toward: Lore and Yang made friends in middle school after getting in a fist fight, but they didn't get to know each other well until after Nika befriended Lore. Yang occasionally gets misfiring protective-over-Hyojae angry towards Lore, and then they're grumpy at each other, but they tend to bounce back pretty quickly. They bond over their shared interest in tattoos.
ROOMMATE / FRIEND
Name: Quinn Chesire
Birth Year: 2003
Occupation: Student / Barista
Feelings Toward: Intensely protective, actually get along quite well. Yang will fight you if you hurt this kid. They have a fair amount in common, and Yang appreciates not being the baby anymore. He helps Quinn with his homework, but it's a secret. He barely knew Quinn before the kid moved in to the household, but they've gotten really close.
Yang was born in Turkey to two Vietnamese immigrant parents, forty-five minutes after his twin sister and half an hour after midnight, meaning that the two of them don't actually share a birthday. They haven't been able to share anything else since either, from childhood room (Yang's crib got moved to the living room), to toys, to friends.
The family moved to the US and started the immigration process when Yang was nine years old. Fortunately, he'd already started learning some English, and he had a fair amount of natural facility picking up the language. Less fortunately, he and Cam's relationship got worse starting when they moved to the US, and when their parents were looking at getting them into private middle schools, they decided that they would encourage the twins to go to different schools.
Yang ended up attending Lakeside. He did well in school and didn't really enjoy or care about it, focusing more on art, and as he discovered it make up and hair styling. Even so, he was a straight A student. He didn't really have friends until he ended up sitting next to Nika in their shared math class (where he was the only seventh grader). The two of them bonded, especially over their similar immigrant experiences, and not too much longer over their discovery of both being queer.
Yang was really annoyed the next year to be left behind in the middle school. He was even more annoyed when Nika made a new friend in high school (Hyojae), and Yang adored him, even though it concerned him that he seemed to kind of intimidate the older boy.
High school was a time of overwhelming emotions, a lot of anger, and a really rough coming out to his family. They did not take it well, nor did they take his academic disinterest well, but he didn't get kicked out. There was a shouting match when Yang decided not to apply to four year college, and he takes some community college classes here and there to appease his parents (on their bill). They still aren't really OK with him not being straight, but they've not cut him off completely either.
Yang started working at a make up kiosk at the mall right after he turned eighteen, and he's studying to get make up artist and stylist certificates. He was incredibly relieved to be able to move out of his parents' place and in with his friends. He's been working on getting full sleeve tattoos (another fight with his parents), and on acquiring plants to bring home to Hyojae who is actually good at taking care of them. Yang loves plants, plants do not love him.
