Saehwan had just gotten back from a camping trip, and he'd not had the time to make it to the grocery store on his way home or before school, which meant that he was in need of caffeine and a snack as he got off his bus home from UW and had none at home. Starbucks was right there staring at him, so he went in for the first time since probably high school. He'd been to the Starbucks near the UW campus plenty, but not this one.
He wasn't the only one who had had the same idea, so it took him a while to get to the front of the line. The person running orders looked kind of familiar, but so did a lot of people in Cedar Beach. He'd probably gone to high school with the guy, maybe an upper classman?
He got to the order and flashed a smile at the familiar person, and ordered fairly efficiently, "I'd like a grande green tea latte, half sweet, and a piece of the gingerbread."
That would hold him until he could get to the store and get home and make dinner happen, and it wouldn't be too terribly expensive. Now that he was right in front of the other man though, he looked really really familiar, and Saehwan was trying desperately to place him.

Samnang was nearing the end of his shift, and he'd spent a good portion of it in the back, due to phone conferences, an interview for a new potential barista, and other tasks, and he felt bad because he knew his cashier and barista were suffering today. It had been busy, like line-to-the-door busy, all morning, and they had had two call outs, and Sam had been lined up for conference calls today for the last two weeks. He went about duties as customer support, prepping new coffees, getting the food, checking the condiment bar, and cleaning what he could.
He let out a tired sigh as there was a break in the line. "Okay, I think it's calmed down." He told his coworkers as he wiped his forehead. "Sorry I was gone so long."
"You came at just the right time, I think." The barista said over her shoulder. "A second longer, or rather, one Pike more, and we would've been in real trouble." The cashier agreed. Sam grinned at them. "You two did great. Thanks for sticking it out. You," he pointed to the cashier, "go on your lunch. I'll ring until you're back. Then if it's not too busy after, you can practice on bar." "Okay," The cashier said chipperly as she punched out for her lunch and headed to the back. Sam signed on to a register just as the line started forming again, and he mentally groaned as he gave the first customer a smile.
Some time passed, and he gave a small wave to the mid-shift shift lead, but was in between customers so he couldn't yet say hi. The next customer seemed really familiar; this wasn't uncommon, he grew up in this town and so anyone who had gone to school here and was around his age could be familiar. He couldn't remember his name, but he remembered it was not English. Something bird. His mind wanted to say bird bird, but that a) seemed unlikely and b) seemed silly. "Wait a second..." He spoke out loud, that sparking his memory. "Aren't you Saehwan? Right? Sae Saehwan?" He waited to type in Saehwan's name in case he was wrong, but he was pretty sure he wasn't. Though it explained the bird-bird, because of Saehwan's last name, and English name, though he honestly couldn't remember which bird was Saehwan's English name. The other cashier had come back and taken care of the line, and was now taking care of the coffees, so under his breath, Sam hesitantly added quietly as he pointed to his name tag, "It's Samnang, from GSA in high school."

Saehwan grinned at Samnang and said, "I was just trying to place you man, it's been forever. And yeah, that's me, you got the right twin and everything."
He glanced behind him, surprised that the line seemed to have dissipated during the brief exchange. He'd had a thought, and toyed with it for a few seconds, but he'd been lonely recently, with his brother not living at home and busier with other things, and none of Saehwan's close high school friends had stayed in the area. He'd liked Samnang pretty well in school, though they'd not known each other super well. He said, feeling like he'd paused maybe a moment too long, but hoping that it wouldn't come off as awkward, "We should catch up sometime. I didn't know that you still lived in town."
He figured that there actually were a decent number of Cedar Beach kids around their age who still lived there, but he felt like he didn't run into a lot of his crowd around town much, even the ones who hadn't left immediately after high school. It wasn't like he didn't have buddies to go hiking with and stuff, but they weren't the kind of people he could sit around and talk with the way he could with his twin when they both had free time.

Samnang grinned, "Yup! I'm still here. And uh... As someone who was called every brother's name by teachers we shared, I'd like to think I can pride myself on telling you two apart and keeping your names from getting mixed up. But also, you two literally did everything possible to not look alike if I remember correctly." Samnang said, still grinning. The smile faded slightly as his eyes drifted towards the line and noticed it was growing again. "Anyway, your total is $4.75. Also I'm off in like ten minutes if you've got time and want to catch up..."

Saehwan handed over his rarely used Starbucks card. He glanced around and was surprised by how many seats were free considering the size of the line that had been in front of him. Most people must have just been grabbing something and going. He looked back to Samnang and grinned, saying, "I'll just grab a seat and wait for you then. It would be cool to get the chance to catch up, though I'll have to grab the dog for a walk before too much longer, but you could join for that if you wanted."
He added with a little laugh, "It wasn't so much that we were actively trying to be super different as that we're really just that dissimilar as people. All that same was used up on our appearance or something. Actually teachers did a better job on average than classmates too because Sparrow and I took really different classes. But like, you don't even look that much like the brother that I kind of know. Like enough alike to not seem confusing that you're related or anything, but not cookie cutter faces either."
Once he'd gotten his card back, he headed to wait for his food so he wasn't holding up the customers who had gotten in line since he started his order. He kept glancing at Samnang while waiting for his food and then nabbed a table where he could easily see the other man while waiting for him to get off work. It was nice to be getting a chance to catch up with someone.

Samnang nodded, saying quickly, "Yup, sounds like a plan. And yes please, I love dogs." He had always wanted a pet, but never asked for them because he always assumed his parents would have said no, considering how many kids were in the house already. At this point, he figured he could just get a pet when he got his own place, or found someone to move in with that would be okay with it.
He laughed softly at Saehwan's explanation of him and Sparrow - right, that was the other brother's name - being different, nodding in agreement about his own family. He couldn't help but wonder if Saehwan was talking about Nicky or Devi, now that he knew Devi was like, an actual human, and one with interests, some even similar to Sam's. But he could wait until he didn't have a line of customers to ask. He added a chipper, "talk to you soon," as he handed Saehwan his card back, and then called to the next customer in line once Saehwan was far enough away from the register.
With two cashiers, the line died much quicker this time, and Samnang signed off his register, tapping the other cashier on her shoulder and telling her to try being on bar on for a bit, telling the barista on bar as well so she could keep an eye on the line, adding, "Once Jason punches in, go on your lunch." He waited until he got affirmation from her before heading to the back and greeting the shift lead. "It's been pretty busy today, but those two are killing it out there. I've got Katie practicing on bar, and then Rae is going to go on lunch once Jason gets in. I... am about ten minutes past my scheduled time, and I've got a friend waiting, so I'm out of here. Everything else is in the logs." With that, he punched out and took off his apron, slinging it over his shoulder and going to the register, glad the line had stayed dead long enough for him to get a final drink. "Hmmmm I should make it hard, right?" He teased,"since you're learning still?"
"Noooo," Katie whined back.
Samnang laughed, "grande blonde flat white."
"That is hard," Katie whined more."
Samnang laughed again, giving his numbers to Rae and heading to the hand-off plane. "Better you learn on me than a customer though, right? Make sure you make the shots ristretto, it's an extra shot, try to avoid too much foam." He coached as she made his drink. As he was handed his drink, he took a sip, giving her a thumbs up. "Presentation could use a little work, but the taste is spot on." He praised. "See you guys!"
He went to sit across from Saehwan, giving him a grin. "What's up man? Also I'm curious which of my brothers you kind of know." He dead-panned.

Saehwan had finished eating and was still sipping on his drink when Samnang made it over to his little table, drink in hand. He smiled at Samnang and said, "Not too much. Busy school stuff because I'm nearly done with my degree."
He paused for a second, thinking about the question, then said, "Actually, I think that I know two of your brothers. I was in math class with Nicky for the two years we overlapped in high school. Devi's one of your other brothers though, right? I've, uh, met him through some community events and stuff, but I don't know him super well."
He wasn't exactly sure which of Samnang's siblings he got on with, so he didn't mention that Nicky had been kind of a pain in the ass in high school, or that Devi was quiet, but he liked him pretty well, and he definitely didn't mention where he knew Devi from precisely because he knew that stuff was weird with family for Devi, though somehow he suspected that Samnang wasn't the problem, at least not on purpose. Of the brothers he'd met, he liked Devi quite a bit better than Nicky though.
He opened the possibility of a new topic and asked, "So other than working here, what have you been up to the past few years?"

"I feel it." Samnang sympathized, nodding as he recalled his time in school. "I just recently graduated, finally, so I totally get the busy with school life."
"Oh!" Samnang began, a grin breaking out on his face, "Yeah, I think you did have some classes with Nicky, and yeah, Devi's another one of my older brothers." He chuckled,"I uh... recently found out Devi was a real person with like... a personality. I've learned a lot of things I'd kind of forgotten about him, and so we've trying to bond more." He laughed, "Mind you, this all started with my time attending a drag ball, so uh... it's been an interesting ride."
He thought over what he had been up lately, and shrugged, "I mean... not much? If you remember Jiuk - he was also in GSA, very quiet. Went by Z in high school. Anyway, I still hang out with him a lot, or uh... I'm really into skateboarding lately? And then I still like anime and Asian dramas. Oh! I've been really into learning languages, I took like... five? While in college. I can speak Korean now!" He said excitedly, then added, quieter, "but not fluently so if you decide to speak Korean at me be nice." He returned to his usual volume, "I also took Mandarin, Thai, and Khmer." He shrugged, "Okay so I guess only four languages." He paused. "Other than that, just working here. I'm assistant manager now, and there's a rumor going around the manager is going to have to transfer soon because her wife is potentially relocating to Florida." He playfully brushed off a shoulder, giving Saehwan a cocky look, "So you're probably looking at the future manager of this fine establishment." He said jokingly.

Saehwan grinned and spoke in slow, simple Korean, "That's an impressive list of languages. Are you keeping up with practicing now that you're done with school?"
He switched back to English and said, "Well, if I have a friend managing the place, I'll have to remember to come in here more often. I'm pretty sure that this is the first time I've been in this location since high school."
He thought over Samnang's babble of what he'd been up to and said, "I go by the skate park sometimes when I'm taking Jeonsa or Hwanghu on walks because it's near the access points for one of the good waterfront trails. I don't think that I've seen you there, but I also didn't know to look out for you."
He grinned and added, "Oh, right, do you want to see pictures of my pets? I think that I mentioned earlier that I will probably need to go collect them for a walk at some point, but you're welcome to join me if you want. I'll have to warn you though that Jeonsa takes kind of intense walks, comes with the territory of being a husky-Australian shepherd mix. I don't take Hwanghu out everyday because she can technically get the exercise she needs at home, but she likes walks, and sometimes it's gratifying to see people's reactions to a leash trained cat."

"I'm trying to," Samnang replied back in Korean, punctuating the sentence with a grin and short laugh.
"Even if I don't become manager, you should come visit more often. I mean, I know it's Starbucks and there's a thousand better options around here but even so! I'm here." He said, straightening up and sticking his nose in the air for only a moment before chuckling again.
"I tend to be there in the afternoons, so depending on when you go..." He began, fading out. "And even then, it's random, when I decide to go. So we could've easily continuously missed each other." He changed the subject, "And yes, I'd love to see pictures of your pets. Especially your cat on a leash. That's great. If you don't mind, I'd love to join you on a walk."

Saehwan grinned and said, "It would honestly be great to have company on the walk."
He pulled out his phone and flipped open to a picture album of his pets. He showed the first one to Samnang and said, "This is Jeonsa, she's an Australian Shepherd and Husky mix, and she's very well behaved but also very energetic. She definitely makes sure that no matter what, I get out of the house every day."
He glanced up and Samnang, checking for a reaction, before flipping to the next photo, one of his cat. He said, "And this is Hwanghu, she's very good at keeping up on walks, though she tends to decide to just perch on my shoulders a good chunk of the time too. She and Jeonsa get along, and they're both very smart animals, so that means they get into trouble sometimes."
He glanced up at Samnang again, before flipping through more pictures, some of which Saehwan also featured in, of the animals out camping with him.

"Excellent, it's settled then." Samnang said, grinning at Saehwan as he nodded. He looked at the pictures and let out an enthusiastic, "wow! They're so gorgeous!" Now he really wanted a pet, especially if they could be as pretty as those animals. He enjoyed looking at all the pictures, a grin seeming stuck on his face as they looked through them. "That's so cool that you have a dog and a cat to spend time outdoors with. If I got a pet, I think it'd be fun to teach to skateboard." He said, only half-joking on the last part. He'd seen enough videos to know pets could learn to do it, and how great would stranger's faces be when they saw him skateboarding with a pet? Or maybe he'd get an animal he could train to rest on his shoulders while he was skateboarding. That would also get some great looks.

Saehwan gathered up his things and stood, stretching a little bit as he did. He wasn't the greatest at sitting still, so he was definitely ready to get moving again. He grinned at Samnang and said, "Want to head out then? I can finish my drink on the way. I'm sure that they'll be excited to meet you. Both of them are good with people."
He thought about the logistics of teaching an animal to skateboard and said, "I could see how that would work, teaching an animal to skateboard, though you'd have to find a pretty well coordinated and trainable animal probably. Just getting one to ride on it would be easier most likely. Is that something that people do?"
He grinned again and tilted his head, gesturing towards the doors, "You ready?"

Samnang stood up and dumped his drink in the trash - it was mostly ice at that point anyway - and then nodded to Saehwan. "Yeah, I'm ready." He laughed a bit as the conversation veered to skateboarding animals and nodded, "There's plenty of videos across the internet of animals doing it. I'm assuming some of them, especially the cats, see their owners doing it and want to mimic them. Hence, skateboarding pets. Heck, just on my break I saw a gif of a dude skateboarding and pulling his dog on a skateboard behind him. It's entertaining to watch."

Saehwan led the way from the Starbucks down the street towards his dad's house. He said, "I'm still living with Dad, though we mostly avoid each other at home. It's kind of funny because Sparrow and Dad get along, and I've always had a bit of a contentious relationship with Dad, but Sparrow's the one who moved out first."
Saehwan thought about the skateboarding animals a bit more and said, "Honestly I bet either Jeonsa or Hwanghu could learn to skateboard given the opportunity and motivation, but I'd probably have to relearn myself first. I've not touched a skateboard since Australia, so in like a decade. I wasn't super into it, just had friends who were, and it didn't end up being something that I picked back up here."
He was half tempted to ask Samnang to teach him how, it would be an excuse to hang out with him, but Samnang didn't seem to need much help being convinced of something to do together. It was nice to have someone have just made time in their day to hang out with him.
