Inkar had so far been enjoying the Gender and Sexuality class that she was taking for her minor. It was an interesting class and to date, she'd done a lot of readings, participated intermittently in class, and written essays which was getting her a pretty good grade. The first thing the professor had done when she'd arrived in class though was announce a group project. In theory, Inkar didn't mind group projects, but a lot of her classmates lived on or around campus, and that meant that if they wanted to work in the evenings, she would either have to risk unpredictable evening bus schedules, beg her parents to let her use the car (and find parking), or beg a ride from Timur. None of these were unsolvable problems, but she didn't like any of the solutions much. She was hoping that the professor would let them find their own partners and she could seek out someone else who lived further from campus and would get scheduling concerns.
The project itself sounded interesting. It involved investigating how a space in their community interacted with gender and sexuality and either made it a welcoming or non-welcoming space. She winced when the professor started reading off pairs though, clearly just going down the alphabet, and hoped that she'd luck out and get someone else who lived a ways off campus. Finally the professor got to the Ms and read off, "Nika Moon and Inkar Mun."
Inkar looked around for the other girl, trying to place what she looked like. She was pretty sure that Nika sat further back in the class than she did (Inkar needed a new prescription, she'd been sitting at the front for everything).

Nika was loving her class on Gender and Sexuality Studies, but no one loved group projects. She had really hoped she had left that behind in high school, as she somehow had managed to avoid them until now. She didn't want to deal with someone who lived on campus, and if that was the case, she hoped they had a car so she could get them to come to her instead of vice versa. She didn't really know what Inkar Moon looked like, at least not from the front, but she recognized her from various other activities from the class, and her eyes honed in on the girl looking around for her. As everyone began moving to meet their partners, she let out a short groan as she noticed the two desks beside her instantly filled up, while the desk near Inkar remained empty. She picked up her notebook and (rainbow) backpack and went up to the other girl. "Inkar, right? I'm Nika." She said, giving her a smile.

Inkar smiled up at Nika, her eyes almost immediately settling on the backpack, and the smile breaking into a full grin. She replied, "Yeah, I'm Inkar, and you're my same last name but spelled differently buddy in the class because that messed the teacher up during the first week. I like your backpack!"
She was glad that she was wearing her bi pride colors bracelet that day because it meant that she could semi-subtly shift her sleeve so that it showed, and hope that Nika would notice. She figured that she might as well start getting logistics out of the way, and she said, "So I live off campus, still with my family over in Cedar Beach. Saves a lot on housing costs, but it means that since I usually take the bus, it's easier for me to only be on campus during the actual daytime."
It was a statement, but she asked it in a kind of questioning tone, hoping that Nika would be fine with working together during the middle of the day on campus unless she also lived over closer to where Inkar did, or like drove and would be willing to do a lot of the going back and forth. She hoped that Nika would be alright to work with, especially because the other girl was cute.

Nika's smiled broke out into a full grin at the compliment on her backpack. "Thank you!" She said chipperly. She leaned back into her seat with a sigh of relief, "Oh thank god. I was hoping I got someone else who lived off campus and-wait, did you say Cedar Beach?" She waved her hands as if saying it was too easy. "I also live there. This group project just got ten times easier." She said, relief obvious in her voice. She glanced over to Inkar, observing the other girl. She was pretty, cute even, and... Her eyes narrowed in on something, a bracelet Inkar was wearing, and she wondered if the colors were intentional. "I like your bracelet." She commented simply.

Inkar grinned, full of relief, when Nika said she also lived in Cedar Beach. She said, "That's a lucky coincidence. My place is in the 3800s block of Ashgrove Way, but honestly anywhere in town isn't a bad walk, and I'm pretty relieved not to be paired up with someone who lives on campus and doesn't drive. Also, unless there is literally no better option, we shouldn't try to study at my place, way too many younger siblings underfoot."
She shook back her sleeve to show the bracelet more fully and said, "Thanks! A friend got it for me after Pride last summer, said it was an early birthday present because he wasn't going to be in the country for my birthday."
She flopped onto her arms on the desk and asked, "Have you got any thoughts on places in Cedar Beach that would be good to do the project on? I mean, we've got the LGBTQ+ Teen Center, but there's a lot of pretty queer friendly places in town, though maybe my perspectives are a little skewed from who I spend time around."

"I live on Cedar Beach Road, so downtown is also quite easy to get to." Nika told Inkar with a grin. She leaned back in her chair as she thought of places that might be good, her eyes watching Inkar as she explained how she got the bracelet. "Oh, that's cool." She replied simply.
"The LGBTQ+ Teen Center seems like a good option, but I agree there is a lot of other fairly queer friendly places that isn't as obvious as the teen center? Y'know?" She said, not really sure how to put it. She made an exaggerated frown and mimicked weighing two options. "I think it'd be more exciting to find a place that doesn't have their stance in the name, and therefore it's less obvious, but I also say if we can't find anything, we just go with the center." She paused, looking back to Inkar with a cheeky grin. "That's my vote, at least."

Inkar nodded and said, "I kind of agree about picking someplace a little less obvious, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Helps that I've got an easy connection for the teen center, one of my best friends' older brother is the manager there."
She thought about it for a moment and added, "Driftwood, um the dance studios that offer a bunch of community classes, but also the club for that matter especially since they have an under 21 queer night, is another local queer friendly place, and I guess that's a little less obvious since they aren't officially a queer establishment even though they do drag nights and stuff. That might be another option. You have any ideas?"
She jumped back to the topic of where to meet and said, "If you like boba tea, we could try meeting at the place near the high school, as long as we don't go right after the school day on a school day, it's usually a pretty quiet place to study. I would do my homework there sometimes when I was doing running start at CBCC and had a weird school day because I still had a few classes and sports at the high school."

"Wow, that's awesome." Nika said, an impressed look on her face as she nodded in approval. "So we can keep that in mind if we maybe run into any hurdles with other ideas?" She suggested.
"Oh yeah! I forgot all about Driftwood." She agreed. "I think that might be a good one to try to get in touch with. Especially since it's essentially an LGBTQ+ space without directly saying so."
"I will never not be down for boba tea." She said seriously, but broke out into a smile a second later. "I like that idea. And if I remember correctly, or rather if we're talking about the same boba tea place, it's not too far away from the main stretch of downtown if the place does end up infested with high schoolers."

Inkar smiled, glad that she'd thought to suggest Driftwood. She asked, "Do you think the club or the dance studios? I don't know anyone who works at either directly, but I know people who know people. The kid that I used to babysit did classes at the dance studios, and they're essentially run by the same main group of people to my understanding. They seem like they'd be pretty open to the idea of the kind of presentation we're working on."
She nodded to Nika's question about the boba place and said, "Yeah, that's the one. It's easy enough to get to a bunch of other things, but I've never seen it get truly chaotic as a place to study. I still meet friends there sometimes, especially the friend who is still finishing up high school."
Continuing to think about logistics, she asked, "What's your schedule like? I'm mostly on campus Monday, Wednesday, Friday, but those days are pretty long with classes. I've got a decent break for lunch though, right after this class, and a bigger one on Fridays because only about half my classes have a Friday session."

Nika thought a moment, considering which would be better for the project, before finally saying, "I think the dance studio would be best. It's much more all-ages friendly than the club, and though that isn't part of the requirements, I feel like it's one that would be more appreciated." She lowered her voice, "Especially since I can hear about three different groups discussing random gay bars in Cap Hill." She said with a roll of her eyes. "So I feel like it'd be welcomed."
"Ah, good to know. Okay then, that can be our meeting place." She said with a smile. She thought over what days would be best for her, nodding after being quiet for a little while. "Fridays at any time work for me, and I'm also usually free on weekends during the day. During the late afternoon and evening I work on the weekends though... Weekends being Friday and Saturday in this case."

Inkar nodded and said, "Good point. Even though the club does LGBTQ+ teen nights, they aren't age inclusive all the time, and I'm not old enough to go when it's not the teen nights. So that's an obstacle. Not that I'd be trying to go there to drink anyhow, it doesn't mix well with sports stuff."
She thought over what Nika had said about schedules and said, "Weekend morning might be best then. I get out of training around 8:30, so I can exist with people around 9:00 or later in the morning on weekends, and honestly I could use good reasons to be out of the house and not being asked to watch any younger siblings."
She thought about it for a moment and then said, "Want me to see if I can make a contact at the studio between now and this weekend, and then we can meet to come up with interview questions and stuff?"
