Face Claim: Kim Wooseok
Josh is about 175 cm (5'9") making him the second tallest in the group, but not terribly tall by Kpop standards. He's very slight and has long arms and legs for his height though, so people often think that he's the tallest of the five of them. He's got fairly pointed features that go back and forth well from pretty to cute (people also often do not guess that he's the eldest of the group). He's got dark brown eyes and naturally dark brown hair, though it's been bleached to reddish brown for so long that he sometimes almost forgets that's not its natural color. He doesn't have any piercings, but he does often wear necklaces, and is especially fond of choker style necklaces.
In public, especially in front of fans/around strangers, Josh is good at being outgoing and a little bit silly. He can be serious when he needs to be, but he's not afraid of looking silly to get the people around him to laugh.
Especially as a leader, Josh tries really hard to make sure that he gets everything done as well as possible and makes things flow smoothly for the people he's responsible for. He does his best not to burden the others with his problems if he can help it.
Josh is a very private person. He doesn't like to let other people know his secrets, and he's very good at keeping secrets for people. Granted, this is partially because he's a little bit scarred because of his parents kind of finding out some of his secrets and reacting badly when he was in his teens.
Josh is kind of living his aspirations right now. He's the leader of a relatively successful Kpop group, and he gets to sing, dance, and perform in front of fans. He's doing the stuff he loves the best, and he's got a good group of friends in Yuseong. He dreads the idea of after Yuseong though because he has no idea what his "what next" would be.
He loves cold weather and snow, which is something that he discovered after moving to Korea. He's got a bad habit of chewing on things when he's nervous (the most common victims being his sleeves and his hoodie strings), and between that and the love of cold, he got nicknamed "Snow Leopard" by his fans. He adores the nickname, and uses it on social media at least some.
Josh is very fearful of people finding out his secrets, mainly that he's gay, but also that he got sent to Korea as a punishment in his teens. (It turned out OK, but the fact that he basically got kicked out by his parents hurts still.) He doesn't like showing negative emotions in front of people, and it takes a lot for him to trust someone enough to let them see his vulnerabilities.
In general, he's a sweet, caring mentor figure to the younger members of Yuseong (and to a lesser extent to the trainees).
MOTHER
Name: Maya Lee Miyeong
Birth Year: 1972
Occupation: Lawyer (tech patent law)
Feelings Toward: He feels rejected by her, and hasn't reached out in a long time. In his teens, he was very angry at her, but these days, he tries to mostly just let it live in the past. He figures that maybe as he gets more successful, she'll be willing to acknowledge him on his terms, but until that point, he's not going to try because it hurts too much
FATHER
Name: Evan Kim Eunyun
Birth Year: 1969
Occupation: Lawyer (business/franchise law)
Feelings Toward: He feels rejected by him, and also extremely distrustful. He's still kind of angry at his dad because his dad did more to undermine his life in his teens. He also doesn't have a great opinion of how his dad was an an older brother.
PATERNAL AUNT
Name: Kim Eunja
Birth Year: 1982
Occupation: Fashion Designer
Feelings Toward: He adores her. When he ended up sent to Korea, feeling very alone and afraid, she made a space in her life for him, even though he's only twelve years older than him, and she made him feel more loved as a relative than his parents ever had in many ways. He's never quite been brave enough to come out to her, but he thinks it would probably be OK if he did. He's just still too scared. They have a dynamic somewhere between Aunt and Nephew and Big Sister and Little Brother.
BANDMATE / BOYFRIEND
Name: Yeo Taehoon
Birth Year: 1/4/1994
Occupation: Dreams Ent Idol, Yueseong's main dancer
Feelings Toward: Taehoon is the only member of the group that he really ever lets see him vulnerable, and it's more because Taehoon has had an uncanny ability to notice that he was upset from the start. He felt very responsible for Taehoon to start with, since Taehoon joined their trainee group so late, and the two of them are able to have serious conversations about all sorts of things. He helped Taehoon with English, and also helped him figure out that he probably had at least one learning disability. He considers Taehoon his second in command and is very grateful to have met him. In the past year, they've gotten even closer than they were before, and Taehoon was the first person that Josh ever came out to. He realized after a bit that he may have been nursing a massive crush on Taehoon for a while. They've not been dating that long (since after Yuseong's first win), and it's still a nervous, giddy sort of feeling for Josh, but he's also worried that it could go wrong so easily, not between the two of them, but with someone finding out.
BANDMATE
Name: Lee Shihyun
Birth Year: 10/31/1993
Occupation: Dreams Ent Idol, Yueseong's main vocal
Feelings Toward: Shihyun is one of the members he is the least close to probably. He's fiercely protective of Shihyun like he is of all his members, but he's mostly accepted that Shihyun is Taehoon's responsibility.
BANDMATE
Name: Fang Qiwang (Kiwoong)
Birth Year: 2/10/1997
Occupation: Dreams Ent Idol, Yuseong's main rapper, university student
Feelings Toward: He is very protective of Kiwoong, especially because he felt very responsible for him when he was first getting used to Korea. He was very glad that Kiwoong adapted so well (and so quickly).
BANDMATE
Name: Kim Kangwan
Birth Year: 10/24/1999
Occupation: Dreams Ent Idol, Yuseong's maknae/main vocal, Songwriter/Producer
Feelings Toward: Kangwan was the first trainee for Dreams Ent, and therefore, the other member of Yuseong that Josh has known the longest. He basically sees Kangwan as his baby to protect at all costs. When Kangwan came out to him, Josh was incredibly torn between reassuring him that he wasn't the only one and protecting the kid if he could. At the time, he decided to keep Kangwan insulated against things like his family situation, and now he can't figure out a good way to tell the kid that he's known he was gay since middle school. He tries his best to be very supportive of Kangwan around everything from his depression to his sexuality, to just the day to day struggles of being an idol. He finally came out to Kangwan recently, after feeling regretful that he didn't at the time that Kangwan first came out.
Joshua Kim Jaeseo was born in the US slightly after his parents immigrated for his father to go to law school. His mom would also attend law school starting when he was about three. Both of his parents had relatively conservative (though fortunately for his overall sanity growing up not Christian) upbringings. Josh was expected to do well in school and do a lot of extra curricular activities (and to do well in those too). They were fine with him doing choir, piano, and dance, so for his early childhood, things went pretty well.
When he was in middle school was when things started to get a little bit out of hand. Josh hung out with a lot of the other Korean-American kids at his school in the inland outskirts of LA, and his family was definitely one of the better off ones. His parents only really seemed to approve of his wealthier friends, especially the ones that presented in "well-dressed" ways. It got worse when Josh started to figure out that he was gay in seventh grade. He knew that telling his parents wasn't a great idea, but it caused a level of simmering resentment.
It stayed simmering for a good long while, but partway through his freshman year of high school, one of his best friends got kicked out of the house for being outed as gay, and Josh tried desperately to convince his parents to let his friend stay with them for a few nights while something was figured out longer term. This backfired spectacularly. Not only did Josh's parents not let his friend stay (and Josh was grateful that there was another friend who was able to do so, though he worried because that friend's family had trouble with keeping enough food on the table for several kids as it was), they also pulled him from his school and cut off his contact with all his friends, deciding that they were going to send him to stay with his aunt in Korea for the rest of his education to help him become a more correct and morally upright person.
Josh was terrified, but in a way, he was really glad to be getting away after all that. He just had no idea what his aunt would be like. She was 12 years younger than her older brother (Josh's dad), and he'd met her once when he was a very little kid and she'd visited the states. All he really remembered of her was a cheerful voice and a penchant for wearing bright colors. When he arrived in Korea, he was too afraid to tell his Aunt Eunja much about himself, but it turned out that she was kind and also interested in a lot of the same things as him (and honestly didn't mind going against his dad's wishes and even sometimes encouraged in). She helped him settle in to high school in Korea (he was able to join 10th grade/first year of high school not too long after he arrived, though after his 15th birthday). She got him into dance and vocal lessons and helped him find clubs for both that he enjoyed.
He was scouted by Dreams Ent after one of their part time employees attended his school's end of year talent show (because one of her younger siblings went to the same school). With his Aunt's encouragement (and willingness to convince his parents), Josh became a trainee at Dreams Ent (their second trainee after Kangwan). He ended up starting to take on some of the leader roles as the trainee group grew, but it wasn't confirmed that he'd be the leader until pretty close to debut.
He has been a bit of a mentor figure to most of the other members of the group, but he's a little bit distant with all of them, except Taehoon and to a lesser, more big brother, degree, Kangwan. He loves being in front of the fans though, and he's fiercely protective of his members. In the past year, he's come out to Taehoon, Kangwan, and Thomas, and he is starting to figure out coming out to other people who are important to him and where he's going with the next steps of his future.
