Seojin had settled in to the dorms at Dreams Ent pretty rapidly. She didn't mind sharing a room with the other girls, though she did feel a sense of responsibility for being the oldest. She was a little farther from her high school, but it was only about forty minutes (a train to a bus), and they both came very regularly, so she left an hour before she needed to be at school, and she had yet to be late.
In the mornings, she generally practiced alone, since she needed to be up before just about anyone else to get to school, though she did regularly overlap with Tai, who also generally practiced before school. In the afternoon, after school, was when the more intensive practices were, but today was a weekend, which meant that she didn't have to get up as early, but she was still there before everyone, except Tai who she had seen heading back to his dorm presumably to eat breakfast.
She started up some music in the practice room and ran her dance warm ups. The schedule on the door hadn't said that it was reserved for Yuseong to have choreography practice, so she knew that she was free to be in there, though if one of the Yuseong guys showed up, she'd be sure to double check if they needed her to go to one of the smaller practice studios. So far, she'd not seen much of anyone other than Taehoon though, and he didn't seem to mind practicing in the same space as trainees and occasionally giving them tips. Seojin had decided that this was a positive part of Dreams Ent being such a small company.
She hoped that someone else would show up before they had official practice time in an hour and keep her company. She had mostly bonded with Anya of the other girls so far.

It was the weekend, but Jane got up at about the same time as she would if she had had to get ready for school. She had not planned to sleep in. She figured that she could use the fact that she did not have to go to school to get in some extra practice. Jane went to the bathroom, got dressed, brushed her hair and put it up, and walked to a training studio. During this time, she got to thinking.
Jane wondered if she really deserved be here. She had been into dancing and singing ever since she could remember, but she had not started taking dancing and vocal lessons until she was thirteen. Prior to that she had been in school choir for multiple years, and had been learning dance moves from online videos for most of her life. She knew that some of the people here had been taking real lessons since they were little kids, which she would have done if she had had that option, but still. She had had two dance instructors, back in England, who had both agreed that Jane had more natural talent than most, but this did not seem any fairer, not that her life had ever been fair.
More importantly, brother would never have allowed it, which was a fact that kept on eating her up inside, even though knew that he was no longer on earth so he could not have her anymore anyway. She kept on reminding herself that he did not own her anymore, although this had not fully sunk in, despite the fact that it had been a long time.
When Jane approached the door, she heard music, so she knew that somebody else was already there. She walked in and saw Seojin. Jane had not interacted much with Seojin, but she had seemed nice. Still, Jane knew that nice people were not always nice, as her brother was both the nicest and meanest person she ever known, but also the only person who she had ever known well. Jane cast Seojin and smile, and began warming up nearby. Shortly after she started, she stopped and froze for several seconds, and then bounced back to reality, and cursed herself.

Seojin saw Jane seeming to struggle a bit with whatever she was doing for warm ups, and she paused her own music and went over to near the other girl. Once she was sure that she was in Jane's line of vision so that she wouldn't surprise her, she asked, "Is everything alright?"
She paused, glancing around. Taehoon had gone off to practice somewhere else, or maybe to a schedule, so it was just the two of them in the studio and a while to go before they had actual scheduled practice. She asked, "Do you want to work together? I can help with anything from the routines that we've been learning that you might be struggling with."
In the group practices, they'd been working on establishing a baseline of all the trainees' choreography, which meant that the dance trainer had been using her and Tai as their demo and assistant students. She'd been relieved that the dance trainer was also pulling the two of them, along with sometimes some of the other very advanced dancers, for smaller training sessions to help hone their skills farther.
She smiled at Jane again, hoping that it would come across as friendly and welcoming. Jane was the one of the other female trainees who had been the most distant, and if Seojin was going to be a good leader, she would have to be able to work with all of the other trainees well.

Jane told herself that, since her brother was dead, maybe he would be okay with her doing this program. She had not moved away from him to do it. He was not even on this earth anymore, or maybe he was. It seemed like she was always with her, controlling her life from beyond the grave.
Jane was a little surprised when Seojin showed up, even though she had known that she was there, but not very. “Oh, hi,” she said, nervously. “I-I’m fine. I’m just thinking about things, whi-which I probably should not be thinking about.”
“Um… sure, thanks,” she said when she suggested working together. She was nervous about this idea, as she had never done much working with others. She also knew that she should, and doing it was probably the only way to learn how.
It occurred to Jane that her brother probably would not be okay with her being here. She would probably have to build relationships with other people. She was sure that he would hate this. She reminded herself that he did not own her anymore, again.

Seojin smiled at Jane again. The younger girl seemed a little bit off kilter, but Seojin knew that moving to a whole new country and living in a whole new way could be disconcerting. She wasn't going to push too much if Jane didn't want to talk about her problems. She didn't know Jane that well yet. Figuring that she should make good on her offer, she went back over to the music and started up something with a steady rhythm that the trainers sometimes used during warm up. She said, "I was still just getting warm, so I wasn't doing a specific routine yet. Why don't you join me for some of the footwork drills we were doing with the trainers this week?"
She knew that Jane had come in with some dance training, so she asked, curious, "What styles of dance did you do before auditioning?"
She hoped that chatting about a shared interest would help Jane settle into talking to her a little bit more. She wanted to do her best to be friends with the younger girls and have them know that they could come to her with questions, but that was especially true for the foreign trainees, even if they spoke fluent Korean, because settling in to a new place that didn't run the way they were used to was going to make it hard for them. Even if some of the Korean trainees were transferring schools, they were still in the same system, and the food would be about the same, and everyone around them spoke the language they were used to.

“Sure,” she said, with a nod. She preferred to dance on her own, but she knew that this would probably be better. She knew that she had to get more used to working with others. For years, dancing had been something that she did by herself, although her brother would occasionally join her. When she took dance classes, she had had to dance with others, but when it came to simply practicing she was always alone.
She paused, when Seojin asked her a question, before answering. Back when she learned dancing just from online videos, she had learned various different types of dance styles. Some of them she had learned a lot of, and others she had learned only a little bit of. The three that she had done the most of, were also the three that she had taken classes in for about a year and a half, before coming here. “Mostly Jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary,” she answered. “What about you?”

Seojin started up the music that they'd been using for their training drills, but she talked as she practiced a bit, trying to keep the atmosphere relaxed. She said, "I started with ballet, but I've focused more on contemporary and modern on that front. I'm a contemporary dance major at Yego, but I've studied a lot of other things. Some jazz and hip-hop too, a lot of b-boy because it's fun, a little bit of tap, but I didn't like how loud that one gets. I've done a fair bit of Korean traditional dance as well, and I've taken all the classes except the major project in that that my high school offers. Trying out new styles is one of my favorite things though."
She watched how Jane was doing in the mirror as she watched her own steps as well, and she said, "If you're ever struggling on something with what the dance trainer is showing us, or a choreography we're learning, or with Korean stuff too, you can come ask me, OK? I've actually taught a fair number of dance classes in the past few years, it was how I afforded my own dance classes."
She tried to stay soothing in her tone, having noticed that something seemed off with Jane, but she didn't know quite what. She tried a slightly different approach and asked, "How are you settling in in Korea so far? I know moving to a new country can be hard. I lived in the US for middle school, and it was hard going there, and then hard again coming back, though at least this direction I was coming back to a place where they spoke the language I was most comfortable in."

Jane practiced, while she listened as Seojin talked about the different dancing she had done, and she thought about a lot of things that she did not plan to mention, and even seemed like a bad idea to mention. For example, the fact that she hadn’t liked tap-dancing very much either, but that was because she had tried tap dancing in regular dress shoes and wished her taps were louder. Also, there was the fact that she had done a fair amount of ballet and korean traditional dance by herself, but never with other people. Or the fact that she really liked swing dancing and tangoing with her brother, but she hadn’t done that since he died. “I like trying out different dance styles too,” was all she said.
Jane was a bit surprised when she mentioned that she used to teach dance classes to pay for her own classes. Jane had got the impression that most of the girls here were really privileged. Actually, she tended to suspect that most of the people she encountered were really privileged, and she wasn’t sure why that was, but it seemed like she had been that way for most of her life. “Thanks. Sounds like you’re more experienced than me.” Jane was pretty sure of that.
Jane felt put on the spot by what Seojin said next, but she was also kind of glad that she was caring about her. “Okay, I guess,” she answered. “It’s just kind of scary.” It was also lonely, but she didn’t mention that. She had been scared and lonely since before moving here, but it seemed even worse now that she had even more things to be afraid of.

Seojin responded, "It's good that you like trying out lots of styles. That's what a lot of kpop dance is in general, mixing a little bit of this and a little bit of that until you get a cool result. Some specific dances might lean more heavily into one style or another, but it's a mix. I think that right now, the trainers are trying to get everyone up to speed on kpop dance, and getting a comfortable mix, but I suspect that once people have been here a little bit longer, we'll start delving into some more style specific stuff to try to figure out the styles that work best for each group."
When Jane mentioned it being scary, she nodded and said gently, "It'll get better the longer you're here. You'll get more used to it and the differences. It's going to vary from person to person, but I know it took me about six months to be comfortable with my environment when I moved to the US. Settling back in to Korea when I moved back was more like three months, but that was coming back, even though it had been like four years. If you need help with something, you can let me know, OK?"
Jane didn't seem super comfortable talking to Seojin about whatever was bothering her though, so she tried to move on to a different topic of conversation, "Did you like many kpop groups before you auditioned? I'm trying to get more of a feel for what all of us like music wise because I do suspect that it's going to influence our concept and style as we get closer to debut."

Jane nodded when she talked about mixing dance styles. That did make sense. She was actually excited by the idea of mixing more dance styles. It did sound a bit complicated, but it also sounded fun. She almost did not bother voicing, but she felt like maybe she should so that she could talk about something, instead of just listening. "That sounds fun, actually," she said.
“Okay,” she said, although she knew that she probably would not. Still, it was nice to have the offer. The biggest struggle that she had had with moving here was that she knew that her brother would not have allowed it, and she had felt like she had belonged to him ever since their parents died. She kept on trying to tell herself that she did not belong to him anymore, now that he was dead and reminding herself that her uncle had said the same thing when she was worried about moving here, but the feeling that she still belonged to her brother just kept on creeping up. She also had that problem with the possibility of making friends, even though she did have a desire to make friends, even if she was not sure how to go about that.
Jane was glad when she changed the topic of conversation. “Yeah,” she answered when she asked about kpop groups. "Gfriend and Cosmic Girls are my favorites."

Seojin was glad to get a response that actually gave her more of an idea of what Jane liked. She smiled and said, "Nice. That definitely makes Gfriend a popular choice. I know Anya likes them since she used them to audition with and knows a decent number of their dances, and so do I. So does Tai for that matter, but obviously he's in the boy's group. Cosmic Girls are good too, but they're a big enough group that we might honestly have a little trouble doing a good job covering their dances, it would be a fun challenge though."
Seojin was definitely suspecting that they'd end up going for something at least a little bit cute as a group all things considered, though she hoped that they'd do something more in the Gfriend realm of cute where the dances were intense enough to be interesting and not just cutesy.
She asked, "Do you know any of the Gfriend dances? That would be fun to do once we've gone through drills if you'd want?"
Seojin hadn't learned "Fever" yet, though she'd been meaning to, because it had come out around the time of the audition camp and she'd been busy, but she knew all the other title track dances, so she figured that she probably had it covered. She figured she might as well add though, "I haven't sat down with the choreo for 'Fever' and learned it yet though I've been meaning to."

Jane was glad that Seojin seemed to also like what she did. Jane wondered if she should be caring so much about what other people thought, and decided that she probably should care about what people she was working with thought. If she made it big, although that seemed unlikely, then she would have to care what fans thought too.
“Good point,” Jane said when she mentioned the issue with covering Cosmic Girl’s. Jane herself tended to not like covers of songs and dances that she liked very much, probably because she kept comparing them to the original. With something that a lot of people liked, that might be an issue. There were some cases though, although not very many and only when the original was not that great when she liked a cover better.
When Seojin mentioned not knowing the dance for Fever, which Jane did know, she felt like she should say something. “I know that one,” Jane said, shyly. After Jane said that, she feared that it may come off as bragging. She added, “but I’m sure there’s plenty you know that I do not.”
Jane wondered if she sounded really dumb. She remembered her brother telling her, many times, that she was dumb and helpless, and was lucky to have him to look out for her. Words: 220

Seojin smiled seeing the positive reaction from Jane. She said encouragingly, "Awesome, if you already know it. Give me a few minutes to watch the dance practice, and then you can lead running through it. It shouldn't take me that long to learn, but I'm sure that you'll have it down better."
She pulled out her phone, pulling up the dance practice video and stretched herself out for a moment in preparation, then, as she watched the dance practice, she went along with the moves, making a mental framework of the song and choreo for herself. She prided herself on being able to learn choreo quickly, but it definitely helped that she knew these sorts of dances well, and Gfriend choreo was complicated enough to be interesting, but it made a lot of sense. There were a few places where she paused, went back and went over what they'd done again, but a few minutes later, she put her phone back.
She turned to Jane and said, "Alright, I'm ready when you are."

"Um... okay," Jane said. Jane did not want to argue with her. Seojin’s reasoning for wanting Jane too led made sense.
She was not comfortable with leading. When dancing with other people, she had never led. She had not really wanted too.
While Jane was waiting, she thought. She knew that the fact that she was uncomfortable leading was just one example of why she should not be here. She told herself that she should. She tried to think of reasons why she should, but she kept on thinking about reasons why she shouldn’t.
She remembered, years ago, when she had told her brother that she wanted to be a professional dancer. He had laughed at her, and told her that she would never be a professional anything, and would be nothing but his little girl forever. She had believed him then, and a part of her still did.
Jane was pulled back to reality, when Seojin spoke, but Jane failed to comprehend what she had said. "Sorry, what?" she asked, feeling dumb.

Seojin could tell that something was still a little off from whatever had been bothering Jane. She said softly, "I'm ready if you are. Let's face the mirrors, and I'll get the music cued up, and when you tell me that you're ready, I'll get it started, but you can stand in front because you know the dance already, and I'm still learning it. Sound good?"
She started doing what she'd said, hooking the tablet up to the sound system so that she could play the music and getting the music ready to start. She set it up with a small delay so that she could get herself into position. She watched quietly to see if Jane would get herself set up while Seojin was getting everything else ready. She wasn't sure how well Jane would respond to being asked if she was alright. The younger girl was very private with everything, and Seojin didn't want to push her to socialize more than she was ready to.
She gave Jane another smile and said, "Alright, all set up when you're ready."
