Saehwan and his dog, Jeonsa, were waiting outside in the front yard for Sparrow to show up to pick them up for going hiking out on the Olympic Peninsula. He'd bribed Sparrow into being willing to do a longer hike with the dogs along the beach and then back along the bluffs above it at Fort Worden with the prospect of spending the afternoon in Port Townsend and getting ice cream at Elevated and maybe tea at the fancy tea shop. He had his Discover Pass in his hiking bag, since he wasn't sure if Sparrow had one of his own, and he'd packed enough water that he would be sure that they were hydrated, otherwise he'd just packed his normal hiking kit, with snacks, a first aid kit, basic emergency survival gear, and some spare clothes.
While he was waiting for Sparrow to arrive with the car, he had Jeonsa run through a series of tricks to burn some energy off; otherwise, she would be a pain in the car, and they'd have to make more stops than he'd hope to. She'd be able to move around some when they were on the ferry, but she wouldn't be able to be too excitedly active there because there would be people around, but she did like standing up at the front of the boat in the wind. If Saehwan was lucky though, she'd be ready for a nap in the car after the ferry, which would mean a much simpler trip up to Port Townsend and Fort Worden.

Sparrow was behind schedule by the time he got into his car with his dog, Aera. He knew this, but getting up this early was hard. And he didn't know what to prep, so he just grabbed a water bottle and the portable water dish for his dog, as well as some doggy bags. He fed his dog and then let her run around in the backyard as he fed the cats, noticing they seemed to have collected another stray during the night, as an unfamiliar cat was now sleeping peacefully in the sun. "Hello there, friend." He said to it softly. It was fluffy, so he really wanted to pet it, but didn't want it to run away, either. He'd leave a note for Cappy, and maybe later it could be brought to the shelter so they could check if it had an owner. He added some treats for Aera, and probably also Jeonsa, into his pack, wrote the note to his roommate letting him know he'd possibly have no service for most of the day and telling him about the cat, and then headed out.
He texted his brother a simple, on my way and started the car, giving his dog an ear rub as he buckled her leash into the seatbelt holder. He headed off to his family's home, arriving pretty quickly and parking the car and getting out. "Sorry I'm late. I didn't want to wake up." He dead-panned.

When Sparrow pulled up at last, Jeonsa had finally decided she was done running around for the moment. He laughed a little bit at his twin and told him, "Sounds like you. Don't worry, you gave this little hellion a chance to not be going stir crazy in the car. If I keep her walking around on the ferry, she'll probably be ready to nap for most of the trip out to Port Townsend."
He hoped that Sparrow was actually going to be up for the hike that he had planned. He'd double checked that there would be shorter options, and he knew the last point to turn off before the long stretch of the beach with no ways back off it, but he really wanted to make this hike at a good time of year, when he could get a good low tide, and this was a good day for it.
He loaded his and Jeonsa's stuff into the car and clipped her harness to one of the belts in the back, settling her car dog bed that migrated between friend's cars for going out to the wilderness to hike. Jeonsa was mostly pretty good at car etiquette, as long as she wasn't hyper, and then she let everyone know that she was bored. Saehwan was pretty sure that she was ready for the trip.
He asked his twin, "So, are you ready for this hike and then the best ice cream you've ever had?"

"Excellent." Sparrow replied with a laugh. "Jeonsa, hello." He said, bowing playfully to the dog, only to get his face licked. He scrunched up his face and straightened back up, wiping his face with a jacket sleeve. "Aera is a lot calmer than Jeonsa, but I don't think she'd mind getting to walk around while we're on the ferry." He said, looking to his own dog.
He gave his brother a full smile as he mentioned ice cream, "If the ice cream is that good, I'll do anything." He said cheekily. His face quickly changed into an overdramatic pout, "but it better not be too hard of a hike! You know I don't exercise." He clutched his chest, eyes closed, still being dramatic, "But... if it looks like I'm headed towards the end, just... remind me of the ice cream." He opened his eyes are Jeonsa licked his hand, and his smile instantly returned. "Yes, hello, I'm trying to be dramatic to your owner here." He told the dog bluntly.

Saehwan laughed at his twin's dramatics and said, "Come on Mr. Drama, let's go catch the ferry. I checked on the internet and it looks like the lines aren't bad right now since you still managed to be early despite stalling. If you want, we can stop for crepes in Kingston to fuel you up before the rest of the drive."
He gave Jeonsa a stern look and said, "Behave darling."
She settled down into her seat, showing off that she did in fact know how to behave in the car.
Saehwan grinned at Sparrow and said, "I'll be sure to remind you if you start griping, and exercise is good for you. I know that you take Aera on walks, so this shouldn't be too too bad, and the views are going to be incredible. And in case the dogs decide to dunk themselves in the water at some point, there are towels in what I stuck in the trunk."
He was better at restraining his squirming excitement over his dog, who was now happily licking Aera's face in the back, clearly excited to see her sometime playmate, though thankfully tired enough from her earlier workout not to be straining at her harness or being loud.
He leaned back in the seat, getting himself to settle a little bit, it was a long drive, and he could walk around on the ferry, but he wanted them to get there quickly so that they had more time for the hike and to have fun in town afterwards. He asked Sparrow, "So, how have things been with you recently?"

Sparrow got back into the car and began driving, perking up at the mention of crepes. "Ooo! That sounds good. I want some crepes. Gotta have something to burn off, right?" He only half-joked. He glanced into the rear view mirror as if it would let him see what his brother had packed, but he only caught a glimpse of their dogs licking each other's faces, causing him to smile. "You really came prepared, huh?" He mused, before adding, "Aera goes on walks, yeah, but it's typically not ones long enough to qualify as hikes."
He thought over how his life had been recently before actually replying, "It's going alright. Cappie got some girl so he hasn't been spending as much time with me, which kinda sucks, but..." He shrugged, "He's allowed to date. The shelter is going well, and our cat enclosure attracted a cute fluffy kitty last night, so hopefully we get to take care of it. It's been busy, I guess. How about on your end? And how's dad?"

Saehwan laughed and told his twin, "Of course I came prepared. I do this sort of thing nearly every weekend, and I know you don't so I needed to be prepared enough for both of us."
He was a little bit surprised at how Sparrow talked about Cappie dating. He'd always wondered a little bit if his twin had a crush on his best friend, but he'd also figured that not asking about something that was one of the bright points in Sparrow's life was probably best. He said, tone light but also sincere, "Clearly that just means that there's more time for the two of us to hang out, huh?"
Saehwan paused for another second when the conversation turned to him. He started with his animals because that was easy. He said, "Well the animals are good. As you can see, Jeonsa is as full of energy as ever, and Hwanghu is probably going to need a new running treadmill soon because I think that she's started to wear out the wheels on her current one, but I finally got the outside cat run done, so she can do laps if she's really bored. Plus, I took her backpacking last month, and she had a great time. Though running into other hikers with a cat on a leash gets great reactions. She also spent good chunks of the hiking perched on top of my pack though."
He had to pause for a little bit to think of what else to say, finally going with, "I finally have confirmed got all of my classes for the fall, so I'm going to graduate after that quarter unless something goes dramatically wrong. Just have to start looking for jobs now, but I think that I can probably find something with one of the departments that I did internships with."
He took the longest to touch on that last question. He said, "Um, he's dad. We've only gotten in one argument in the past week, so that's good I guess. He's been feeding himself fine. Mostly we've been giving each other enough space, which is good."
It was almost funny that he was the one still living at home while Sparrow had moved out considering their respective relationships with their dad. He was relieved that they had made it to the ferry line because he could change the subject a little bit, saying, "Nice, it looks like the last ferry is letting out and there's almost no line, so we should make it on to this one."

"Right, right..." Sparrow muttered. His brother had always been the more athletic one of the two of them, which looking at it now was a bit ironic since Sparrow was always the more high-energy of the two of them. "I guess it's good, at least one of us knows what supplies we'll need.
He smiled, "I guess it does! If you'll make time for me, of course." He said, only half-joking.
At the mention of Hwanghu wearing out her kitty treadmill, he cooed, "She has always been a hyper one... I wonder if she'll lose energy in old age, it seems like she really won't. Oh! We actually had one donated to the shelter, but we have nowhere to put it, did you want to take it off our hands? I'll give you the family discount." He joked for the last sentence, sticking his tongue out a bit to show he was joking about payment. "It's out of the packaging but looks brand new otherwise."
"That's great that your classes got approved! So exciting that you'll be graduating soon. Once you graduate maybe you'll actually have time for me. You can make me hike more if I like this round. Good luck with getting a job, I hope you get your dream job!" He said enthusiastically, giving his brother a thumbs up. He let the conversation about their dad fall to the side, knowing he had the better relationship with their father of the two of them.
"Even better, there's a spot available almost as close to the entrance as we can get." He said.

Saehwan said, voice a touch serious, "I'll always make time for you. You're my twin."
He dropped the serious tone when they turned back to talking about the animals. When Sparrow mentioned the cat treadmill, he said, "If you don't want it, I'll happily take it off your hands. She's a pretty high content Bengal, and that means she's probably going to be this active well into old age. And then she'll only stop because her body stops letting her, and she'll probably be grumpy about it."
Saehwan tried not to squirm in his seat in excitement as they got to the ferry. The ferries had been one of the first things that had sold him on the Seattle area. He liked being able to just go across the water that easily, and the Peninsula and the Islands were beautiful.
He told his twin, "I'm glad you're willing to try going hiking with me. I'll keep the pace not too fast. It's fun that way because we can look at things, and I won't tire you out."
Once they were fully on the ferry, he said, "Let's get the dogs up to the deck so that we can go stare out at the water and stuff."
He was already reaching back to clip on Jeonsa's lead, and she'd perked up at the possibility of getting out of the car.

"I know, I was just teasing you," Sparrow said softly. He grabbed Aera's leash and pulled her out of the car, the pit bull wagging her tail as she looked around. "Sounds like a good idea." He agreed, letting his brother lead the way to the deck of the ferry. Being on the ferry brought back memories to when they had first moved to America, he remembered how much Saehwan hated the idea of moving, but then was excited about the ferries.
Finally, he returned the conversation to Hwanghu. "When she gets to that point, come talk to me. Hopefully by then I can give you suggestions on how to make Hwanghu's growing old less of a strain on her. I have some ideas now, but don't deal with the cats as much as some of the others. The most I can suggest to do now is looking into a multivitamin for her, if you haven't already. They have some in treat form, though we don't sell any at the shelter, I've seen them at pet stores, especially the not-as-well-known ones, like Mud Bay. Starting her on something now will help to extend the amount of time she can easily use her body to get rid of the pent up energy."

Saehwan laughed and told his twin, "I already go to Mud Bay for all of both of their food and stuff because you recommended it to me, and have both of them on diets that include dietary supplements as needed because you and the vet both recommended it. Among other things, both of them are very picky about their food and will try to get out and acquire their own of the fresher variety if I don't provide them food they're happy with."
He shook his head and said, "I've sorted out what they like now though, so it's not a big deal, and Mud Bay has freeze dried sardines that Hwanghu will gorge herself on if I don't hide them in a place that requires thumbs to get at. I think that she likes that they crunch. I also have to make sure to get both of them the sausages because they'll fight over them if I don't, even though they're theoretically for dogs. Hwanghu's got more jaw strength than some small dogs that I've encountered."
Once they were up on the deck, Saehwan threw back his head and let the wind blow the hair of his face, this was one of his favorite parts of the ferry. Once he'd breathed the fresh air for a little bit, he turned to his twin and said, "Aren't the Olympics beautiful today? They've got little cloud crowns, but it doesn't look like there's any rain happening out there. Don't worry, I wouldn't take you hiking in the rain, even if I like doing it."

"Right..." Sparrow said with a laugh. He had forgotten he'd already lauded Mud Bay for his brother. "Hwanghu's a character, that's for sure. I'm glad you two are such a good fit though. I knew you'd make a good owner for her." He rambled contentedly. He noticed his brother taking a moment to enjoy the fresh air, looking out to the mountains as Saehwan mentioned them. "Oh yeah, it looks beautiful... And yes, please, don't make me go hiking in the rain." He said, a small laugh escaping as he spoke. He pet Aera as she seemed to noticed they were going to stay in one place for a moment and sat down, wagging her tail lazily. "Hiking in the rain just sounds... mushy." He added as an afterthought, scrunching up his face.

Saehwan laughed at Sparrow's description of what he thought that hiking in the rain might be like, and he replied, "Only if you pick the wrong trail. Soft dirt trails without much cover sure do get mushy in the rain. But paved or hard packed trails might get a little slippery, but you won't sink into them. I don't think that paved trails are as fun, but if someone was trying hiking in the rain for the first time, I'd probably aim for a paved trail. Hard packed and rocky trails are just fine in the rain though. Or softer trails with a lot of cover. The rain coming down through the trees is cool, and they provide a fair amount of rain shelter."
He chuckled and said, "But I know that it's not really your thing enough that I wouldn't drag you on a rain hike unless you actually got interested, and even then, we'd go somewhere like Boeing Creek Park or the hiking trails down near the waterfront so that it would be easy enough to turn back and go home if you didn't like it."
He said, "I'm going to walk some laps of the ferry with Jeonsa so that she's not a brat during the long leg of the car ride. Want to come with me or meet back up here with enough time to head to the car before the ferry docks?"

Sparrow nodded absent-mindedly at Saehwan's explanation of rain hikes, not saying anything out of fear he might accidentally admit it sounded really interesting. Plus, he loved being surrounded by nature, it was just the exercise part of it he wasn't thrilled about.
He looked down at Aera and smiled as she looked back up at him. "I think we can go with you. What do you say Aera?" He asked his dog, who started wagging her tail and tapping her paws. "I'll take that as a yes."

Saehwan didn't have too much to say as they looped the ferry. He smiled politely at people who greeted his dog, which was common enough, he was used to it, Jeonsa was very pretty. The little kid who rushed up, then stopped himself to ask very politely, "Can I pet your dogs? Please?" got a much more real smile out of Saehwan.
Saehwan crouched down to be closer to the kid's height, judging he was about four or five years old, and put an arm over Jeonsa. He said, voice friendly and cheerful, "Sure kiddo, but a couple of ground rules first. Jeonsa here is still pretty young and very active, so she's pretty easy to startle if you don't make sure she knows you're going to pet her. So first, you're going to want to hold your hand out in a loose fist and let her sniff it."
He showed the kid, and smiled as he did as he'd been shown, giggling when Jeonsa licked his hand. Saehwan looked up at his twin to see if he would join in, then told the kid, "Now, it looks like she likes you, that's usually what licking means, either that or you're unusually tasty."
The kid giggled again at his joking tone, and Saehwan continued, "When you pet her, make sure that you don't pull fur or ears or tail. The top of the head is a good place to pat first, approaching from where she can see you, and along the back is the other good area."
The kid very carefully pet Jeonsa, earning a wagging tail and another cheerful lick. Saehwan glanced at Sparrow again and said, "What do you say, should Aera get some pets too?"
The kid's mom, another shy little boy in tow, slightly hiding behind her legs showed up then and said, "Oh no, I hope he's not bothering you. He really likes dogs."
Saehwan smiled up at her from where he was crouched from talking to the kid. He said, "No worries, we also really like dogs, so I get it. He's been very good at patting politely."
He knew that it wouldn't be too long until it was time for them to go back to the car, so he kept an ear open for the announcement.
