Kenichi let out an audible laugh as Julian's stomach grumbled, but he tried to hide it with his hand. "Don't worry, we're almost to the restaurant." He promised.
"oh boy do we have a lot of catching up to do for you with movies." He said, only slightly dramatically, "Well, I mean, that is if you like them of course."
His smile faded as Julian asked what he knew of the situation and about his new roommate. When he had heard the story, he remembered thinking back to his own parent's reactions to his coming out, how they weren't great, but at least they let him stay at home. "Um... I mean. I know you got kicked out for coming out. And that you're a smart kid, and you'll be going to UW... uh... but otherwise I really don't know much, besides what we've discussed since meeting, and the obvious things like Jordan's your brother..." He spoke honestly.

Julian was relieved by Kenichi's reassurance that they were nearly to the restaurant. He was pretty sure that food would at least help him feel more functional, probably not better but more able to cope with everything.
He did manage to muster a small smile at Kenichi's comment about movies and say, "I think that I'd like that. Even if I don't like all the movies I, um we? watch, at least I'll be figuring out what I do like. It will be something to do."
Julian was relieved that Kenichi knew the basics of the situation, though he was a little off. He sighed and dropped his head back against the the headrest of the seat. He mumbled, "Getting outed, but close enough. Wasn't going to tell my parents until after I was out of the house, maybe not until after college. Didn't get that chance. I knew that they wouldn't react well to me being gay too after everything with gege."
He sighed again and said, "You got the rest of it about right though. No clue what I want to major in, and my options are now wider and muddier than they were because before I was planning to major in something in the overlap between what my parents wanted and what I was actually interested, which makes up a pretty small set of choices, now I have so many options that I've not even thought about. Probably not something in STEM though. Don't know if that will confuse Jordan. I've seen him like twice since he got kicked out, it's going to be weird seeing him so much. We've emailed, it's not like I don't talk to him. It's just. Weird."
He bit his lip and said, "Sorry, I'm babbling. This is not how I expected all of this to go."

"No, I'm actually just going to make you sit in a dark room and watch them all yourself." Kenichi joked, not even keeping a straight face for a minute before he let out a soft, bubbly laugh. "I'm joking... yeah, we'll watch the movies together." He added.
He pulled into the restaurant parking lot and parked the car. "It's okay to ramble. It sucks. I'm sorry to hear about what happened. On the one hand, I can only imagine this was pretty traumatizing for you. On the other hand, this gives you the opportunity to pursue what you want to do in life, and get closer to your brother. So there's some silver linings there, they're just really hard to see right now." He gave Julian an awkward smile and then climbed out of the car, sticking his hands in his pockets and sauntering towards the restaurant. "You know... I thought I had it bad when I came out to my parents," he began once he was sure Julian could hear him. He realized he didn't know if Julian knew he was gay. "All my friends - I grew up on Bainbridge Island - that came out, their families took it really well. I told my parents and they just kind of... pretended it never happened. In 8th grade, I brought my at-the-time boyfriend home, and my little sister blabbed, and my parents forbade from bringing boys home or staying at boy's houses until after I left the house. But then I met Jordan, and felt lucky." He paused, "I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm not necessarily thankful to your parents, cause well, they're assholes, but like..." He laughed, "Now I'm babbling."

Kenichi's laugh was a good laugh, and Julian smiled at his teasing a little bit, feeling tentative but a little bit more hopeful.
At Kenichi's comments about there being some silver linings, Julian nodded and told him, "It's nice in a way to have the chance to really choose what I want to do for me, and I'm glad I did running start because it means I don't have to worry about getting behind my age group if I sort of wander around between classes trying to figure out what I actually want to do, since if I already had a major, I could probably graduate in two years. If I take a year to decide on a major, I can still graduate early probably, and my scholarship covers summers, so there's that too."
He focused for a minute on them getting seated and looking at the menu, even if he had a go to order the first time he went to these sorts of places, and it was on the menu, so he wasn't really dithering to decide. Kenichi wasn't straight either, had had at least one boyfriend, that was good to know, and a relief in a way. Finally, he figured out a thing to respond to and said softly, "Just because Jordan and my parents were a kind of bad extreme, it doesn't make it not suck how yours treated you. I mean, at least we did get something clear cut. It's not something where we're going to spend years in an awful push and pull interaction trying to make our parents see it our way."
He was annoyed at himself to feel a prickle of tears as he was saying that, and he rubbed roughly at his eyes for a second, glad that the tears didn't actually spill over again. He was glad for the temporary distraction of ordering, but then he didn't even have the distraction of pretending to look over the menu anymore. He glanced back up at Kenichi, looking for something to ask about, and said, "You've lived with my brother much more recently than me, what's living with him like? What's the house like?"

Kenichi was happy to see he got Julian to smile with his teasing, but the conversations they were having were bittersweet at best. He decided he'd try to find a way to bring the conversation back to light teasing and not so filled with emotions.
As they got into the restaurant and were seating, he took a moment to decide on a food before looking back to Julian. "That is lucky, it gives you a chance to explore classes you maybe otherwise would have had a chance to without getting behind your peers. And you've got a scholarship, and a place to live, so you don't have to worry about finances right away. If you ask me, you should try classes you have an interest in, just to see what it can offer you." He smiled, "But of course, I've never been to college so maybe don't take my advice blindly." He said jokingly.
His smile faltered at Julian's next comment though. He pretty much pinned how he felt about his parents - it was like a push and pull interaction every time. He was still filial to them, but every time he talked to them, even if he brought up something LGBTQ-related, they would just pretend they didn't hear him. It wore him down after a while, and so eventually he just stopped telling them anything. His interactions with his parents now felt empty. He simply hummed a response, deciding it was time to delve away from that topic for now.
The server interrupted their conversation, and Kenichi was actually thankful for the change of topic once they ordered, though he had a feeling Julian was more desperate to change the topic. "Uh... It's.. alright? I guess." He stammered, letting out a laugh. "All of us are at about the same levels of tidiness, so we balance each other out pretty well. We either keep to ourselves or hang out together, usually those hangout times are at least somewhat planned, but occasionally we'll just all like, watch a movie in the living room together or something. The house is nice, I guess. I tried to rearrange the room so you can fit your things in, and while I don't think you'll have too much trouble with that considering how little things you actually have, if you find yourself wanting to rearrange the room, I am up for discussing it. Just... putting that on the table."

Julian nodded and said softly, "That's what I'm planning to do. In the next week or so, I'm going to go in and meet with someone at the registrar's office and work on a schedule. I'd had one, but I'm going to want to change some things."
When Kenichi offered the possibility of rearranging the room, Julian looked down with a tiny smile on his face and said, "I'll keep that in mind, but I'm sure that it will be fine. We can discuss it after a little while and see if there's a configuration we think will be better."
Julian was relieved to be able to eat and focus on just his food for a bit. He was starving, and he knew that there was a little it more driving left to be back to his brother's place. He hoped that he'd be able to settle in OK. Kenichi seemed nice, and Julian was excited to meet his dogs, and maybe to get a chance to go look at art and watch some movies with his brother's friend.
((OOC: I feel like this thread is wrapping up, we should figure out what we want to do next with them.))
