Jiuk made a face as they entered the dog area, having to remind himself the noise was because there were so many dogs, not necessarily that one dog would be that noisy. A lot of them were cute, not too many fluffy dogs though, which had him pouting a bit. As they came across what looked like a short-haired, brownish husky, and Hwangjung nudged him to get his attention, he let out a small gasp, going to the dog's kennel and cooing at it. "Look at your eyes! Oh my gosh they're so gorgeous!" The dog wagged it's tail enthusiastically at the attention. He stepped away again, not before motioning as if petting the dog, and returned to Hwangjung's side. "I didn't think I'd like a short-haired dog that much, but that one seems very sweet." He muttered to his boyfriend.

Hwangjung smiled at Jiuk cooing over the dog. As they finished their little tour of the dog room, the employee asked them, "So, did you see any animals that you'd like to get the chance to meet in one of the socialization rooms?"
Hwangjung nodded and replied, "Yeah, there were a few. There were two cats, a little tabby on the right hand side when we came in, about halfway along the wall. And then a few more down from her a longer haired black cat. Especially if both of them are OK around other cats, we'd love to get the chance to meet them."
He paused, but judging off Jiuk's reaction he didn't think that he was too far off the mark, and continued, "And then among the dogs, the one that looked like a shorter than normal coat sort of brownish husky. I'd want to know a little bit more about that one's energy and exercise needs as well."
He looked at Jiuk, wondering if he'd missed anything, and leaving a pause for Jiuk to add anything that he'd left out.
The employee said, "I'll just take you over to one of the socialization rooms and we'll get the visits set up and answer any questions that you might have about the animals. I can tell you that that husky mix loves a good run, but whatever he's mixed with does make him a little chiller than a lot of huskies. He likes other dogs pretty well too, so he'd be a good candidate for taking to the dog park."
There was something a little sad in the way the employee said the initially upbeat sounding explanation, and Hwangjung made a guess, "Has he been having trouble getting adopted?"
The employee looked at him, startled, and then said, clearly a bit chagrined, "Yeah. He's actually really well trained, and a little chiller than most huskies, but he's a really smart dog. He can open doors and stuff. He's the sort of dog you can train to do all sorts of things, and he doesn't tend to get into things and make a mess of them, but he is hard to keep out of places that he doesn't want to be kept out of or in places he doesn't want to be kept in."
Hwangjung was thoughtful for a second and asked, "Would you consider him a challenging pet? Neither of us has had a pet before, and we don't want to get in over our heads."
There was a part of him though that was starting to get oddly attached to this dog, and he was trying not to let it get ahead of his common sense. The employee said, "Not really if you don't have little little kids or tons of fragile decorations around your house. Though we'd recommend some enriching activities, things like puzzle feeding. They take a little bit of effort, but they aren't actually hard."
Hwangjung glanced over at Jiuk, wondering what his boyfriend thought of this exchange, and the dog in question.

Jiuk nodded at Hwangjung's questions, seeming to consider the answers they were receiving. "Was he being trained to be a service dog?" He asked curiously at the employee's mention of him being able to open doors and things. "We think so, but we don't have any definitive information on that." The employee replied. Jiuk nodded again, scratching his chin. He looked up to Hwangjung, "I look forward to seeing him in the socialization room." He said with a smile. It faltered a bit as he thought of another question at a realization, "He's part husky, does that mean he barks a lot?" "While he does bark, for being part husky he does not bark a lot." The employee replied. "Ok..." Jiuk replied, not totally sure how he felt about that answer but accepting it. They could probably train him not to bark, too.

The employee brought in the dog first, possibly because they'd been asking several questions about him. The dog walked very politely on leash as the employee brought him in, definitely seeming calmer than some dogs of his type that Hwangjung had seen. Once the dog was fully in the room and the employee had closed the door, she unclipped his leash, and the dog pranced over to them, staring up at Jiuk inquisitively and letting out a low "boof" of a bark. It wasn't terribly loud, and the dog tilted its head to the side, wiggling a little bit.
Hwangjung was impressed by how polite the dog was about it. The employee was standing relatively near him, and she had a sheaf of papers in one hand, and when Hwangjung looked inquisitively, she said, "I've got his files here. He's about two and a half years old, and he's up to date on all his medical exams and vaccinations. Overall, there's nothing complicated with his health, so he'd just be a take to the vet every six months and if something happened sort of dog. He's not a terribly picky eater, though we do recommend going with a mix of wet and dry food for a dog with as much energy as he can have."
Hwangjung nodded along, listening, but also watching the dog wag its tail.
The dog eventually turned his attention to Hwangjung, prancing over to him, and Hwangjung sat down on the floor to get a better feel for what it would be like to be around the dog in a home type setting. When the dog got close enough, giving him a smilar little bark to the one it had given Jiuk, he offered his hand for the dog to sniff, and the pet it a bit. His fur was remarkably dense for how short it was.
The employee added, clearly remembering that Jiuk had been concerned about barking, "He generally barks like that. It's not that loud, and he doesn't usually do it over and over, though he is pretty expressive with it."
The employee stepped out for a little bit, still able to see them through the windows on the room, but letting them get the chance to interact with the dog. Hwangjung looked up at Jiuk from where he was sitting on the floor and said, "I definitely still want to meet the cats, but I do like him. He's a pretty dog."
He got a little headbutt from the dog after that and resumed petting him.

Jiuk pet at the dog after letting it sniff him, smiling at the little boof the dog had given him. He pouted a bit as the dog decided to give some attention to his boyfriend, and it was only then that Jiuk processed the information the employee had about him. "He is definitely very sweet, and seems trained well. Taking him on walks wouldn't be too difficult if I was doing it alone, for sure. I would also like to meet the cats still, but I have already grown quite fond of this cute puppy." he looked down as he felt a wet tongue on his hand, smiling down to the dog, "Yes, I think you're cute." He told him.

The employee smiled at them when she came back into the room and said, "I'll take him back to the dog room for now, and bring in the two cats you were interested in. I'll just leave his papers here for you to look over while you wait."
Hwangjung glanced at the dog's papers, and they pretty much tallied with what the employee had been saying. It made him a touch sad to see that from the record, the dog had been brought back four times, though none of them were logged with complaints, just that he wasn't a good fit for their living space.
He would have to think about it, and he was pretty sure it would be a bad idea to bring the dog home that same day, but if Jiuk was up for it, he was pretty sure that he actually wanted to adopt this dog. He was glad when the employee brought in the two cats. The little tabby seemed adventurous, wandering around and looking at them, but the black long haired cat was more skittish.
Hwangjung watched them get comfortable with the room and stayed where he'd sat on the floor waiting to see if one of the cats would eventually come up to him. He also watched Jiuk to see how his boyfriend was reacting to the cats.
After a bit, the little tabby did amble closer to him, coming close enough to him for him to offer her a hand to sniff, and when she didn't shy away, Hwangjung pet her gently. She was soft, and she purred just a little bit before scampering off again.

Jiuk looked over Hwangjung's shoulder to glance at the papers, resting his chin on his boyfriend's shoulder as he did so. He pouted a little at the sadder parts of the dog's history, and he liked how sweet the dog had been. He straightened up as the cats were brought in, trying to keep himself from just trying to catch one of them to pet. He knew better, but that didn't stop him from watching the two as they explored the room. He reached out a hand slowly towards the black one as it neared him, but it paused for a moment before scampering off. He had to stop himself from jumping as the tabby instead decided to take his invitation, and he waited for a head butt from the cat before petting her. "Do you have any information on them?" He asked the employee softly, the tabby looking up at him curiously.
"Not particularly; they were found as strays, neither of them has seemed to have much experience with humans, but as you can see, the tabby girl has warmed up to them a bit faster. Although the black one is pretty skittish around strangers, once she warms up to someone she's quite affectionate, as some of our volunteers have found out." The employee explained.
Jiuk looked to Hwangjung after at that answer, feeling torn about which one to pick, the two cats or the dog. "what do you think?"

Hwangjung was torn. Cats in some ways seemed easier, but the dog was clearly well trained, and these two cats were skittish and seemed a little bit awkward around each other. He wasn't sure exactly what he needed to know to know what would be best to choose. He told Jiuk, "I'm not entirely sure, but I have some thoughts."
The employee said, "I'll take the cats back to their spots, and the two of you can talk about your choices."
Hwangjung smiled at the cats as she took them away, and then turned back to Jiuk. He said, "I don't think that we should bring an animal home today, though if we can agree and they do something where they hold the animal for us until the space is ready, then I'd be down for that."
He collected his thoughts for a second time and said, "I did really like the dog. He's well trained and not complicated to care for health wise. The cats might be easier in some ways, but I'm not sure. I've never had either. Maybe we should ask if they have any guides on prepping your home as a first time cat or dog owner and see which one seems like it would be more manageable?"
He looked down and said, "I think that if I was making a snap decision though, I'd say the dog."

Jiuk waved goodbye to the cats as they were taken away, looking to Hwangjung as he spoke. He nodded in agreement, "I think you're right. And yeah, asking for guides for both might be a good idea, so we can look over what kind of set up we should expect. As much as I liked the cats, I have to agree, the dog is a sweetheart and although he may be a little too well trained," he chuckled as he said it, "I really like him, and even if he's a high-energy breed, I think he would be pretty well-behaved on the days I would be caring for him myself."
"Quite honestly, before coming here I was pretty convinced I'd make sure we'd get a cat, but that dog just stole my heart, so I'd have to agree."

Hwangjung leaned over and gave Jiuk a quick kiss on the top of his head and said, "Alright, it sounds like we've got a plan. We tell the person that we think we might be interested in adopting the dog, but we need some information on setting ourselves up to be good pet parents. And we see if they have information for dogs and cats since we aren't sure."
He smiled and said, "I'm glad we're on the same page here though. There's a part of my brain that is just like, we could have all the pets, but I don't think that we're ready for that. It's not like we can't have more pets later if we decide we want to, but too many pets all at once sounds like a bad idea."
He smiled more professionally as the worker came back in, and he said, "We're not ready to make a decision today, but we think that we might be interested in adopting the dog. We wanted to know if you had good resources for first time owners for dogs or cats that we could look over so that we could make sure that our home is ready, and also if there's a form or something that we could fill out to start the process of being ready to adopt?"
The worker smiled back at him and said, "He really took to you, so that's good to hear. I'll take you back out to the front and get you started on the paperwork and get you our first time pet owner brochures. If you're pretty sure he's the one you're going for, we have have you fill out the application with a three day hold, and even if you aren't ready to take him home, if you fully sign we can keep him here as a boarded animal for a while while you finish prepping your home. I can also send you with some specific care notes for him in terms of what you'll need in your home."
Hwangjung smiled over at Jiuk and said, "That sounds exactly right. We'll follow you to the front then. Thank you!"

Jiuk laughed, "As much as I'd like to agree on taking all the pets, I think you're right. Especially since both of us will be first-time pet parents, three might be a little much."
He nodded along as Hwangjung spoke to the worker, and listened intently as the worker spoke. He was relieved they could hold the dog for them as they prepped the house, and that they had specific care notes for the dog. He reciprocated the smile as his boyfriend shot him one, taking Hwangjung's hand in his as they headed to the front, feeling excited.

At the front desk, Hwangjung was loaded down with various brochures on pet ownership and what would be needed to properly care for animals, including starter checklists for dogs and cats. He also filled out his half of initial adoption application and stepped aside to let Jiuk fill out the other half.
Once they were finally out the door, he said, "Do you want to go home and look these over? If we feel decisive, we can maybe even go shopping for pet supplies later today. We've been talking about this for a while, and I don't want to keep putting it off if we're ready, though I definitely want to sleep on it for at least one night."
He was pretty sure that there wasn't much more that the house would need to be ready for a dog, or a cat for that matter, especially not a dog as well trained as the husky mix that they'd seen, but he'd also never had a dog, so he figured that he'd need to actually go over the checklists and check the house for anything that they needed to watch out for.

Jiuk finished his part of the application and looked at the load of brochures Hwangjung and given, giving his boyfriend a slow, slightly shocked nod. He hadn't expected there to be so much recommended to prepare for bringing home a pet, and even though they'd been talking about it, it suddenly felt a lot more real and a lot more daunting of an idea. But also, an exciting prospect that potentially, within the next 48 hours or so, they could potentially have a pet. It was a similar feeling he felt when they were closing the sale on the house, excited, but nervous. This was also a big life change.
"Yeah, I think we should definitely give ourselves a night to sleep on it, even if we make a solid enough decision to go pet shopping tonight." He agreed, headed out and towards the car.

Hwangjung made the drive towards home in relative silence, keeping his attention and posture open in case Jiuk had something that he wanted to chat about, but mostly thinking things over. As they pulled into their driveway, he asked, "Do you want to order some food while we go over these?"
He spread the brochures out one their little dining room table once he got into the house, sorting them neatly into cat and dog sections. He was slightly amused just how much more information they'd gotten from the employee on dogs, specifically larger dogs, and including some on the specific dog. He carefully put the basic checklists on top of each pile.
He smiled over at Jiuk and said, "Maybe we should go through cats first just so that we don't get overwhelmed with dog stuff and forget to look them over?"

Jiuk let his mind wander on the drive home, staring out the window and wondering what it would be like when they got a new pet. He presumed it would be an adjustment, no matter if they got the dog or the cats. There would probably be some stressful things involved, but, and this went especially for if they got the dog, he wanted to make sure they saw it through, and didn't give up on the animal after the first (few) mishap that happened.
He followed his boyfriend back into the house, glancing at the packets and nodding at Hwangjung's suggestion. "That sounds like a good idea." He agreed. At a glance, it looked like most of the things on the list for cats was things he expected - cat litter, litter tray, food bowls, and the like. "This all seems pretty straightforward, and while still a lot, nothing has yet thrown me for a loop regarding cats. He poked at the bigger pile for dogs, "I have a feeling at least one thing in here might confuse me. I don't know what yet, but I just get the feeling. Maybe because it's such a larger pile."
