Farmer’s Market days were one of Viviene’s favorite days. She didn’t have to dress up for work. She didn’t have to worry about messing something (someone’s life) up. She just got to sell her produce, which she spent a lot of her free time tending to. Growing produce was something Viviene believed everyone could do. It would make food healthier for everyone. Plus, it was a lot cheaper than going to the market and wasting money on the waxed produce.
It was in the low 50s, which was cold for Viviene. She was bundled up in a mustard colored knit sweater. She paired it with a pair of dark blue jeans and some black cloth shoes. Her short hair was pulled back in a low ponytail, revealing her tiny black hooped earrings. Viviene was makeup free today, which her skin was thankful for. Her pale face was given color by her rosy cheeks. Her cheeks were redder than usual due to the cooler temperatures.
In her petite hands was a warm Styrofoam cup of coffee, which she had gotten from one of the other venders. She stood alone at the Clausen booth, her siblings off doing God-knows-what. She blew gently on the hot coffee, hoping it would cool down to an appropriate drinking temperature soon so she could warm her throat up.

Dakota and his mother’s, along with Dakota’s dog, went to check out the produce booth. It was among the first booths that they went too because they wanted to go there before all the good fruits and vegetables were gone. Unlike some children, Dakota liked most fruits and vegetables, so he was happy to check out the produce stand.
They looked around. When Dakota saw some peas and corn, which happened to be his two favorite vegetables, he signed to his mother’s, asking for some. They answered yes, and they got some. He mothers then looked around and picked out some of the produce they wanted. Dakota then saw some apples, which was even more exciting than the corn and the peas. He put his hands into the view of both of his mother’s, to get his attention, and asked if they would make apple pie with him, and they agreed, and they picked out some apples for it. His Mommy was soon getting some money out.

►Leos' morning had started out the same as most mornings with coffee and the local newspaper. While most people his age had switched from actual newsprint to electronic news Leo still treasured the printed word. Something about feeling the paper brush through his fingers as he sipped his coffee at his dining table while the morning sun beamed through his windows reminded him of his father and how Leo would watch his dad do the exact same thing in the mornings before going off on his way to work. Leo didn't technically have work today, he wasn't expected in the office, but that didn't mean he wasn't planning on spending his day working. Cases had a tendency to pile up and become overbearing if left for too long but that wasn't why he was going to be working today. In the time since moving to this new town, Leo hadn't met many people. He had always had a problem with being sort of a shut-in and he always thought it was because he was so dedicated to getting through Harvard but that he didn't have Harvard he had his job. He loved his job more than he thought most people loved their spouses. His job was important and he was out there helping people get a fair trial but this morning, he was putting his imaginary superhero cape down and going to the local farmers market, where he was hoping to meet some of his neighbors and local people.
Leo quickly finished his last cup of coffee as he looked down at his watch. It was still early in the day but Leo wanted to arrive before noon so he could find a place to park and walk around and see everything the place had to offer. He parked his car where the instructed parking was and started to walk towards the entrance of the farmers market. Leo pulled his dark blue cardigan around his long white button-down shirt and blue tie as he walked, buttoning up the cardigan most the way up but leaving the last three buttons and the very top button undone. Even though it was almost Spring here it was still a bit too cool to wear spring clothes, and Leo always felt more comfortable in a button-down and tie with slacks and oxfords then he did in any sort of casual wear unless he was out hiking.
When Leo entered the farmers' market he was amazed by how big the event seemed to be for this area. In New York, there were massive farmers but since Leo lived and worked in Lower Manhattan and his favorite farmers market was in the Upper East side he didn't go that often. The one great thing about moving away from New York was the lack of traffic, the only bad part, was now having no excuse for not driving himself places. New York's parking being as miserable as it is Leo and his family had a driver Leos' whole life. It was definitely easier than trying to find parking and the subways were always a bit sketchy, especially at night.
As Leo looked around from stand to stand, he noticed someone that he actually knew, Viviene Clausen. The future psychiatrist who had helped him on one of his cases a few months back. His breath still got caught in his throat a bit as he looked at her. She was just as beautiful and her smile seemed to shine brighter than the afternoon sunshine. Leo quickly ran his finger through his hair and started walking towards her booth. He had really hoped to get to know Viviene since the last time they had met but even since Leo had been left by his ex he had become a bit awkward in the dating area of his life. He smiled slightly at the ground as he stood in line waiting to talk to her and buy some fruit. He wasn't exactly sure what he was planning on saying to her but knew if she didn't recognize him, he could just buy his produce and move away from her booth quickly without embarrassing himself.
"Hi." He said a bit nervously when he finally reached the front of the line. "Can I uh, get 6 of the red apples, please?"◄

Viviene was a pretty awkward person when it came to interacting with other people. She was a fairly quiet person, someone who liked to sit back and watch other people. She did, however, find that children were easier to talk to than most adults. They saw things through another mindset, which Viviene found fascinating. She didn't remember much about her thought processes as a child, but it was interesting interacting and working with children, digging around in their brains. They were also much more resilient when it came to hardships. That was something Viviene admired.
She noticed the little boy and two women roaming their little stand, and she gave them a small smile. She also had a weakness for animals, and they were walking their dog around. She picked up a big, red apple, bending down to the height of the little boy. She gave him a big grin, holding the apple out to him.
"Another really great thing to do with these apples is make apple chips."
She told him. She straightened back up, knees cracking as she did. She noticed the tall guy before he even got in line. They had worked on a case together a few months back, and she has not stopped thinking about him. He was so intelligent. His mind was intriguing to her. He also seemed to be a kindred spirit. He was just as awkward as she was with people, or maybe just around her. He was also not bad on the eyes, but Viviene refused to let herself think in such shallow ways.
She kept glancing at Leo as the line moved along, heart racing with each step he took towards her. When he made his way up to the front of the line, she had to peer up at him. Her big doe-eyes gave off an innocent look, and a shy, sweet smile came to her face.
"Hi."
She greeted. She bagged up six red apples, picking the best of the bunch. She somehow thought he would judge her based off her produce skills. Once she finished bagging them up, she handed the small, cloth bag to him. She didn't believe in using plastic.
"These are on the house, Leo."
She told him, forcing her smile to get bigger in order not to creep him out. She wanted to seem cool and collected, but she wasn't sure if her face was really portraying that. As she overthought her smile and word choice, her pale face flushed red with embarrassment and anxiety.
"It's really good to see you again."
She blurted out, unsure if that was an appropriate thing to say to someone you barely knew or not.

Dakota reached for some apples, and the women at the stand handed one too him, and said something. He looked to his Mama, who was closest to him, and she translated it. He did not know what apple chips were, but he kind of wanted to try some now.
He smiled, and signed thank-you to the women, which was always a fun sign to do because it was similar to blowing a kiss, and his Mama told the women what he said. He then asked what apple chips were, while his Mama translated again. Dakota started picked out some more apples, and putting them into a see-threw woven bag that his Mommy was holding open for him.
Afterwards, his Mommy opened up her wallet, and said something that he could not hear. He presumed that she was just asking how much it was or something like that, and that was why nobody bothered to translate it for him.

►Leo stood quietly in line behind the small boy and his mother he tried hard to stare when he noticed that the boy was communicating with sign language. Leo always had a problem with people staring at him as he was growing up, mostly because he was growing so fast he constantly looked under fed, but he couldn't help but wonder what life must be like for this boy. There was no way he wasn't constantly getting wide-eyed looks of confusion from most people as his mother had to translate for him. He gave a small side small as he watched the interaction between the mother and son. He didn't seem at all bothered by the fact he needed help to speak to the world. Leo could feel his heart swell as he thought about how well this boy would do in life if he continued being this way.
Leo smiled sweetly as Viviene greeted him. He tried hard to not let the butterflies in his stomach distract him from what he was trying to do, complete a full conversation with her without bringing up something completely embarrassing to him. He managed to get the first few words out, asking her for a few apples. He breathed a sigh of relief as he managed to not choke on any words or stutter as he spoke. It was only one question but the first sentences for him were always terrible. Leo was pretty sociable when it came to anything having to do with his job. Board meetings, trials, cocktail parties that included sucking up to clients? Those all seemed like a walk in the park compared to talking to anyone outside of his work safety zone. Here, in the world away from work, he was vulnerable to get hurt again. Opening his heart up to anyone new, even just friends, was terrible for him. So instead he had shut himself away and thrown himself into his job but now standing in front of Viv he started to wonder what all he had given up by being scared to say anything to her about his feelings.
He pulled out his wallet as he situated the bag of apples under his long and lanky arms. He raised his eyebrow as she turned down his money before he could even get it out. Leo wasn't exactly used to being around people who weren't as well off financially as he was. He felt uneasy thinking about how hard she had to work to take care of herself when she's still a resident but he was sure turning her down wouldn't be the nicest thing to do.
"Oh," He smiled as he situated the apples under his long and lanky arms.
"Well, thanks Viviene. I'm sure these are going to be great. Loads better than anything I've ever tried to grow." He chuckled a little as he shifted his weight from foot to foot. He knew he was eventually expected to keep the line moving on but didn't want to leave yet. He could feel his hands start to sweat as he tried to think of ways to say, Go out with me some time, without saying it that bluntly. He could feel his anxiety start to bubble up as he stood their in their brief moment of silence.
"Do you want to go out?" He blurted out the same time as she had said something to him. It didn't register to him what he had said until it was already out of his mouth. He felt his face glow red from embarrassment. He was supposed to have one conversation without being weird and now he was asking someone out after 5 minutes of talking. He quickly tried to recover.
"I mean-" He paused as he wiped the sweaty palm of his free hand on the front of his pants.
"Only, if that's okay. We could do whatever or we don't have to. It's up to you." He stammered on and on. He could hear how much anxiety was in his own voice. He smiled softly as he tried to convince himself to not drop everything and run.◄

Viviene kindly took the money from the boy's mom, waving to the boy before helping the next person in line: Leo. Viviene never had to worry about money; her siblings took care of that for her. They paid for her schooling, and they gave her whatever money she needed to make it through the week. Viviene was spoiled in that sense. Once she started her career as a psychiatrist, she would start making good money and would be able to repay her siblings for their generosity. Now, getting them to accept the money would be pretty hard, seeing as they babied her to an extreme point.
"They are a lot better than anything you can get in store. I grow them on my own land, so there are no pesticides and no wax coating to make them appear shinier."
She told him. A healthy, easy lifestyle was important to Viviene, and she would gladly talk to anyone (talk their ear off, too) about it. She was also pretty proud of her produce. She went to great lengths to make sure her crops and animals were well taken care of.
"I can always show you how to take care of plants. I kind of have a green thumb. Years and years of practice."
She told him, beaming with pride over that fact. She knew that living in the cult and being forced to take care of crops and animals probably wasn't the most normal thing in the world, but she was kind of glad that was how she started out. It turned into a passion of hers. It was also something she could to help destress after a long day at school or the office.
At his next ramble, Viviene's cheeks turned a bright red, making its way to her forehead. No one had ever asked her out before. She had never thought of herself as the type of person to go on dates. She also had two overbearing siblings who probably scared people off so that she could focus on her future career. They were very strict about that part. When he finally stopped rambling, she let out a small, nervous laugh, and she peered over her shoulder quickly before looking back at him.
"Well, don't tell my brother, but I would love to."
She whispered, voice kind of shaking. She had no idea what to wear or what to do on a date. She had never even had a first (real) kiss. Great. Leo was going to think she was pathetic. Twenty-six and never been kissed. Not really a big prize to win.
"I could, uh, show you how to make a plant not die."
She added, not really sure how first dates were supposed to go. She wasn't one for going out to dinner, so that was off the table.
"Or I could make us dinner. I do that a lot at home, so it wouldn't be ..."
She trailed off, swallowing hard. The words were leaving her head as she stood there, mind racing about what to do and how to act.
