Kit waited somewhat impatiently at a large table near the back of the cafe. It faced the door, so it seemed like a good place to spot people as they came in. He already had a chocolate milk tea with boba in front of him, and also a small piece of mochi he had gotten from a shop in the mall. He didn't have anything to do at home today, and didn't work today either, so when he was told by the dance crew's leader they were all going to hang out today he was relieved to not have to worry about how much energy he would or would not have by the time they met up. They were meeting up after dinner, but by the time lunchtime hit, Kit was bored out of his mind, and his mom and brother had gone out for the day doing errands. Since this boba cafe shared a parking lot with the mall, he decided it was time to go shopping. Although initally he had gone out in just skinny jeans and a black t-shirt, he had since changed, and was now in a more intricate black tank top with a faux fur jacket. He was even shocked to discover the jacket worked perfectly for the not-quite spring weather, despite looking overly warm (And at the very least, he'd be able to wear it during the winter months when it wasn't raining). The rest of his new clothes were in the trunk of his car, tired carrying everything even just from one end of the parking lot to the other. He had also gottena couple things for his brother, and a coat for his mom, so he didn't feel as bad spending so much. It was about five minutes before they were all supposed to meet that Kit got the first message. Hey guys, really sorry for the short notice, but I actually can't make it tonight! - JenKit huffed in slight annoyance, but didn't immediately reply. A couple other messages came through, one even saying they also weren't coming, but Kit just ignored the messages and played a game on his phone instead. It would really suck if he ended up the only one there, but at least he got some food out of it. After a few more messages came in, he switched over to the messages and added in, but I'm already here... and then switching back to his game. Tags: Devi J. Devi had been at the dance studio teaching a mix of kids group classes and small advanced student classes all day. His phone had run out of battery shortly after he'd gotten the group text about meeting up for a social time with the dance crew and said that he'd be there, but he figured it wasn't worth going home to get his charger and text folks and make himself late. Instead, once he'd finished the lessons and showered at the dance studio, he put on comfortable black jeans and a floaty dark red shirt with an uneven hem with his black leather jacket tossed over the top and walked down to the boba tea place they were planning to meet up with his dance bag tossed over his shoulder. His hair was still a little bit damp, but he'd pulled it up in a ponytail, and it wasn't actively dripping.
When he got to the boba tea place, he looked around, trying to spot everyone else. Kit was there, at a corner table, and he gave his friend a little wave on his way to ordering something because he was suddenly ravenous, and at least a boba tea would tide him over. He awkwardly ordered a hot ginger black tea with boba and while he was waiting for it, wandered over to the table that Kit had staked out. He smiled and mumbled, "Hi. How're you?"
It was a little strange that it was only Kit there, since Devi knew he was running a few minutes late because of his work schedule, and some of their other crew members were punctual, but he didn't mind getting a chance to hang out with Kit. They'd not had nearly enough chances to hang out since Kit came back from college abroad.

Kit perked up as someone familiar finally showed up. As Devi sat down, Kit noticed him sort of glance around the empty table, and he let out a sigh. "I'm good, thanks. He pointed to his phone, wondering if Devi didn't get the messages or just hadn't noticed them yet. "Most of the crew's bailed on us so far, though. Haven't heard from a couple people yet, but I was beginning to wonder if I'd be here alone all together, so it's nice to see someone." He let out another little huff, "How are you?"

Devi smiled at Kit, and after darting over to grab his boba tea when it was called, plopped down into the chair next to him. He mumbled a bit, "'M doing pretty well. Tired though, teaching all day. My phone died after the first text. 'M glad you're here though. 'T's been too long since we've hung out."
He tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling for a minute after taking a few sips of his boba tea, then asked, "How're you settling back in?"
He wondered if Kit would be a good person to ask about how to have siblings properly. Kit had a good relationship with his younger brother. He added, "One of m'little brothers found out I'm a real person at the comp."

"Teaching seems tiring..." Kit agreed. He nodded, "It really has been..."
He blinked a couple moments as he thought about how he'd been. "Um... It's been a bit of an adjustment. Reverse culture shock, and all that. Also I really need to stop leaving tropical places in the middle of winter because it is literally freezing here. I left Thailand and it was about 20°C and come here where it was... about 8°C? I think? I've got to be the only person that loves summers when it get hotter than usual." He said with a laugh. "Except maybe my mom."
He took a sip of his bubble tea, letting out a snort at the way Devi phrased it. "Really? Shocking. Which one?" He always wondered if his relationship with his little brother would have been different if there were more kids in the family. He couldn't imagine having five siblings like Devi had. Plus, would more kids have made his mom decide to stay with his dad? He wouldn't have been able to handle his father much longer than he already had to.

Devi shrugged and said, "It's tiring but rewarding. I like the kids. They're easier to be around than grown ups."
He smiled at Kit's description of the situation, glad that his friends in the crew knew him well enough to know that him being slow to respond was just him and talking in general. He said, a little bit of laughter in his voice, "Well, if you need to borrow jackets, or get a hug when it's cold, uh, let me know."
Devi wasn't a huge fan of heat in general, but he had a pretty wide range of heat tolerance, which was generally pretty helpful for travelling to disparate areas. He did kind of get what Kit meant about going between two really different places though.
When Kit asked which sibling, Devi smiled a little bit and said, voice tinged with some fondness, but also, clearly, nerves, "The good one, Sam. My littlest brother."
He thought about it for a second and added, "I think you might've overlapped in high school with him?"

"Kids are definitely easier than adults." Kit agreed. He chuckled, "I'll keep that in mind to get extra cuddles." He joked lightly.
He was surprised to hear it was Sam. From what he had heard, Sam had no interest in Devi. "Yeah, I remember him. Or well, I remember him being at GSA. I don't remember much else about him. Very sweet kid."

Devi ducked his head a little bit, glad that he didn't tend to blush very noticeably. He'd not not meant that about the cuddling, but he'd not intentionally been saying it that way. He didn't mind the thought though, but also didn't quite know how to communicate that to Kit. For a long time, Kit had been the group baby, and Devi was very much aware that Kit was about the same age as Nicky, which was just a weird thought. He was glad that Nicky and Kit hadn't had the same friend circles in high school though. Back in high school, Devi would have thrown an arm around Kit if he was cold in the taking care of a little sibling way, but Kit had grown up. He murmured, "You-uh-you do that."
Devi was glad that Kit remembered Sam, and specifically remembered him from GSA. It made things easier. Devi managed to get out, "I was closer to him when he was little, like little kid little. But he was close to Nicky, and Nicky and I were never really good at talking. I mean, me, talking, are we surprised? But I watched out for Sam a lot when he was little. It's nice that he sees me as a person again, but I don't know how to handle it quite. How do you treat a much younger brother?"

Kit chuckled and stirred his drink, looking up for a bit whenever Devi spoke. Eventually he shrugged, "I don't know, honestly. And I know that's not the answer you want. But when Lake was born I guess I was just... Inclined? I guess? To help my mom since her and dad got divorced while she was pregnant. And so I got attached to him. And honestly, sometimes it's hard to connect with him, so it's not just you. It's the age difference. I kind of just, I guess... play by his rules. But doing that for an eight year old is very different than doing that for a... how old is Sam? 22? 23? By that age, he can... you know, do adult things. You can talk to him like an adult now." He seemed to realize how serious he was being, and seemed to shrink down a bit as he lost his steam, but he did want to see Devi be able to get along with his siblings, especially his favorite one. "And also, if he's only just realizing you guys used to be close, you've got to rebuild the relationship." He added. "You probably talked about very different things when he was a toddler and little kid."

Devi laughed and said, "That was prob'ly a silly question. Your little brother's a little kid, and if Sam was a little kid, I'd know how to interact with him. Honestly, half the problem is that I'm bad at talking. I should probably like drag him out to dinner sometime or something. Let him talk to me and make the appropriate listening sounds."
Devi felt like he'd talked enough about what was going on. It was nice to just be around someone who, for all that he was having some maybe more complicated feelings around, being around was nice and simple. He asked, "So, are we expecting anyone else to show up, or is it the two of us?"
He smiled into the final question, not quite noticing that he did so, but as he watched Kit, waiting for a response, he looked a little bit hopeful. He added, "If it's just us, what do you wanna do?"

Kit looked at his phone, counting the messages he had recieved. "Just us." He said, looking up as Devi grinned. His cheeks turned slightly pink, "Did you wnat to maybe get a... proper dinner? Or something? There's Cheesecake Factory and Marie Callendars in the mall if you didn't want to drive somewhere else..." He suggested. He knew Cheesecake Factory was typically a "date place," but he also really liked cheesecake and so he didn't care. "Or we could just drive somewhere I don't care..." He muttered under his breath, adding only mentally, as long as it's with you, I don't care.

Devi smiled at Kit as he rambled. He said, "I wanna go get food with you. Maybe we could go down to the beach park after if you want?"
He thought about it for a second and said, "There's a little Thai place that's actually pretty authentic just over into Shoreline, Yum Yum. I've been a couple of times, and the name's appropriate. Wanna go there? It'll be quieter than the mall. We could even go get cheesecake at Central Market and take it with us to the beach after. It's right across the street."
He had the nagging feeling that this felt a lot like a date. Which he sort of felt he should clarify, but it also just seemed like something Kit would enjoy, and also Devi would enjoy, and he wanted to spend time with his friend. His admittedly cute friend. Devi was bad at telling if flirting was happening, and he didn't want to assume one way or the other, so he figured he would just roll with what happened next.
He realized the logistics of things and asked, "Um, did you drive? I just walked."
Since driving still involved borrowing one of his parents' cars, Devi didn't bother to do it much now that he didn't have younger siblings to pick up. It hadn't been worth his while to bother getting his own car. Public transit and his own feet worked fine, though he'd toyed with the idea of learning to ride a motorcycle off and on. Among other things, it would actually be useful for trips to Cambodia when he went out into the more rural areas.

Kit perked up at the mention of hanging out at the beach park after they ate, and his smile only widened at the suggestion of getting Thai food, and then cheesecake. "All of that sounds great!" Kit said excitedly, finishing off his bubble tea so they could leave sooner.
He wished he could call this a date. But he was too scared Devi still looked at him like a little kid, so he didn't bring it up. He wasn't sure how to even bring up something like that. And what if he did, and then Devi didn't feel the same for him and then Driftwood would become a very, very strange place to be. Which would suck, since that place was as much his baby as the rest of the dance crew's. He chewed on his bottom lip, debating if he should bring it up, but as Devi asked a question, he let his mind focus on that. "Uh yeah, I drove. We can take my car." It was technically his mom's car, but she didn't have to work that night so it was fine, he could spend all night with Devi if he wanted. Though that thought made him blush, and he tried to hide it as he turned away to throw away his cup, trying to calm himself down from over-thinking.

Devi took the last few sips of his own drink, having gone through his rather faster than Kit had, and stood, stretching a little. He said with a slightly shy smile, "I'm ready, and hungry."
He snagged Kit's empty cup and went to toss both of their cups in the bin for the compostable cups that the shop used, and ambled back, stretching a little again. He glanced at Kit and said, "Let's go?"
When he got the chance as they headed for Kit's car, he slung a friendly arm around Kit's shoulders. He petted the shoulder of the jacket lightly and muttered, "You're soft."

Kit nodded in agreement, leading them to the car. He felt his face heat up as Devi slung an arm over his shoulders, even though he knew to anyone else it was just a friendly gesture. He laughed softly at Devi's comment about his jacket, grinning cheekily as he replied, "Thank you. I like being soft." He gto to the car and unlocked the doors, getting into the driver's seat. "So where is this Thai place exactly?" He asked, waiting until Devi was ready before pulling out of the parking lot and heading in the general direction of Shoreline. He turned down the music as his phone connected with the car, but didn't want to turn it off. He'd listen to music 24/7 if he could. And besides, if he was confident someone wouldn't complain on his music tastes (vast but mainly Asian), his dance crew members would be those people.
