Devi nodded seriously and replied, "Really. Nicky might be confused by the concept of female friends."
When Sam asked the next question, Devi sighed and muttered, "Dammit Kali."
He turned to face Sam a little bit and said, "No, I never did. If I had to choose, you're probably my favorite sibling."

Samnang actually paused at Devi's comment, furrowing his eyebrows. "I... what? I am? I always thought that title went to Kali." He thought of something else, just a random question that he always wondered based off the history of his siblings. "How come you never went to college?"

Devi laughed a little, but the sound had an edge of sadness to it. He replied, "Not since I was nine or ten. When we were really little I kind of wanted to be her. I grew out of it."
He was a little bit surprised at the next question, but responded, "I've just been taking classes slowly. One at a time. I'm about halfway to my two year. Reading parts of homework are a lot less frustratingly time consuming this way."

Samnang narrowed his eyes at Devi's "wanted to be her" comment, but shuffled that question towards the back of his list for more light-hearted topics for the moment. He was just getting more and more confused the more questions he asked, though. "Wait... You are going to school? At the CC? How have I've never come across you on campus? Why is reading parts of homework frustrating?" He paused, realizing he was asking a lot of questions, which was exactly what Devi had asked him not to do. But, the moment of silence only gave him more questions. One in particular stuck out as his mind went over the conversation so far. "Wait... are you a virgin?"

Devi's eyes widened a little bit at Sam's rapidfire set of questions, and he mouthed, "Slow down."
Once Sam stopped, he tried to compose answers in his head, and then slowly started responding, "The not meeting on campus was on purpose. Started with Nicky because I didn't want to deal with what he might say, and just kept on."
It hadn't occurred to him the Sam wouldn't have realized or remembered that Devi had pretty bad dyslexia, but Sam had only been about five when it had been figured out, and the two of them had never gone to school together with the six year age difference. He wasn't really embarrassed about it anymore, but somehow, talking about it with family made it harder. He said quietly, "I'm dyslexic. Takes me forever to read things. Made learning Khmer really hard, though the letters actually stick together better there."
Sam's tail end question caught him by surprise because he couldn't quite piece together where it had come from, but he drew his eyebrows together in confusion and replied, "No, not a virgin, why?"

"Sorry..." Sam muttered. He accepted the answer for why they never ran into each other on campus. But now he had more pressing questions. "Wait but if you're not a virgin and you've never slept with a girl... are you gay?" He hadn't expected there to be another LGBT kid in the family, but he supposed it couldn't be completely out of the question. Regardless, it surprised him. If anyone, he would have guessed Nicky or maybe Sophie. He felt like his mind was going a million miles a minute, and he couldn't keep to one subject. "How long have you known Khmer?!" He screeched as he realized what Devi had said.

Devi shook his head and said, "Bi actually."
He couldn't help but laugh at the look on Sam's face when he asked about knowing Khmer, and he replied, "'Bout a decade. Started learning before I went to Cambodia for the first time when I was nineteen."

Samnang was so blown away by the second half of his brother's answer, he didn't even process immediately that his brother came out to him. "You've been to Cambodia? For the first time How many times have you been to Cambodia? Are you fluent?" He forced himself to pause the questioning so as not to overwhelm him again, or worse, cause Devi to close off completely.

Devi had to take a moment to pause and count. Finally, he said, "Six times. There's some bboy related charity stuff that I started going for. And uh, fluent-ish. I understand pretty much whatever, can read about as fast as I can in English, so not fast, talking's hard, but that applies to English too. I'm slower in Khmer though."
He paused for a moment longer and then added, "I did mention at home the first few times I went. No one seemed interested."

Samnang tried to remember Devi ever mentioning he was going to Cambodia. He had a hint of a memory of it, but not much. "Talk... slow... but why?" His mind was still reeling. There was a lot he was learning in short time. His older brother wasn't, in fact, some one dimensional-playboy, but rather multi-faceted and interesting. He knew he had stolen the attention from their parents, no matter how unintentional, but he had never thought his siblings got outright ignored because of it. "Our parents... did they stop paying attention to you because of me?" He asked, his voice more solemn than even just a few moments ago.

Devi made a little bit of a face as he worked his way through saying, "I've got a speech impediment that makes talking hard sometimes, 'specially certain sounds. Which was a relief to find out at thirteen because it did mean that our grandparents stopped calling me the stupid one, at least in front of me or mom and dad."
Devi looked almost surprised at Sam's question, and then he shook his head and said, "No, it was a preexisting difficulty. I was the problem child, but I was quiet, so it could mostly be ignored."

"Oh..." Samnang said simply. He had been so pre-occupied with his own issues with his grandparents, it hadn't even occured to him he wasn't the only one their grandparents hated. "Wait but... I always thought you were in favor with our grandparents? On their side, essentially..." He backtracked again to a previous topic, "So then uh... How many boyfriends have you had?"

When Sam said that he thought that Devi had been in their grandparents favor, he started laughing to the point where he actually stopped walking and put his hands on his knees and his head down for a few moments to regain his composure. Once he could actually talk again, he said, "Oh no, I wasn't properly masculine like Ricky, and I wasn't good at school, and I liked girly things. They were so worried about me rubbing off badly on you younger siblings. But like, if I distracted them, they didn't bother you as much, and they already didn't like me. I think that I just frustrated our parents. I kept having new perplexing problems for them."
Devi was relieved with the change of topic, still trying to fully regain his composure from the burst of laughter. He still had to think about the question for a moment and then said, "One and a half? I'm not sure I'd count the person who I broke up with the same day we officially said we were dating."

Sam was surprised by the outburst, but even more surprised by Devi's answer. "But growing up you didn't seem to like... well, for lack of a better word, care." He shrugged, seeming to weigh some options. "It kinda counts. One and a half seems legit. Though I'm surprised it's so few." He debated asking how many guys he had slept with, but decided that really wasn't something he needed, or wanted, to think about.

Devi sighed and said, "I am generally pretty private about my reactions. I got good at hiding how I felt about stuff that our grandparents would say or how I felt if they took something I cared about away."
He shrugged and added, "Why do you think that I shut myself up in my room all the time? It was probably more obvious before I got my own room, but that was when you were like eight."
Devi gave him a slightly perplexed look and asked, "Why are you surprised it's so few?"
