It was a rare day where Yunjin and Theo were the only ones home on a weekend morning. Sheng had dropped Tai off at his dance classes, and Tai would be there for hours because he'd signed up for a seminar class that lasted all morning for the next several weeks, and then had his regular dance class after, and since it was on his way to work, he'd also taken Teagan to a friend's house for the day. Teagan had been very excited about it, and Yunjin had been pleasantly surprised when Sheng had offered to drop Teagan off because Theo had been looking very resigned about how early in the morning the invitation had been for.
Yunjin was somewhat unsurprisingly up before Theo, and he puttered about the kitchen making breakfast and tea. Rice and some green onion pancakes and the Chinese style omelets that Thomas had clued him in that were comfort food for all three of the siblings because their parents used to make them. Now that things were fully settled from the move, he wanted to check in with Theo on some things, like how he and Teagan were doing, and if Theo was wanting to start going back to school and what he could do to help make that happen.
He was happy that Theo seemed pleased with his job right now, and he wasn't going to encourage Theo to leave that because it was a pretty cool job, but he knew that Theo was frustrated sometimes by not having gotten a chance to finish college, and he wondered if Thomas excelling the way he did in school sometimes made it worse in Theo's head.
He put things on the warming plate as they finished, listening for Theo to wake up and come out into the main room. He had been pretty sure that his boyfriend was stirring as he'd left the bedroom.

Theo had heard Yunjin get up, but stayed in bed and possibly even fell back asleep before waking up for real who-knows-how-long later. He only knew it was long enough to be able to smell something wafting in from the kitchen. He stayed in bed a bit longer, checking social media on his phone, more to see if Thomas had posted any updates to Facebook about how Korea was treating him than for notifications, before finally sitting up and stretching a bit. He looked around the room, mulling over the last few months. While they were moving it was quite hectic, and it was finally settled down. He was getting used to things, and he knew it wasn't really easy on Yunjin and Sungyong, or Teagan and Taijia, either. He felt like at first he was awkward with Taijia, but he was warming up to the kid, and was even starting to get back some skills in Chinese he thought he had lost long ago, when he was even younger than Taijia.
He finally stood up, putting on slippers before shuffling to the kitchen. Instead of a greeting, he yawned, covering it with a hand as he forced through it to tell his boyfriend good morning. He took some of the tea and noticed the food, a smile playing on his face as he noticed what had been made. He filled up a plate and sat across the table from Yunjin. "Thanks for making breakfast." He said after glancing at Yunjin and giving him a smile, forcing back another yawn.

Yunjin smiled at Theo's rumpled tiredness as he emerged at last. He settled at the table with his food as Theo was getting himself situated, and waited for Theo to find a spot at the table to actually start eating. He just smiled a little bit at Theo's thanks, but it was nice to feel appreciated.
Once Theo had the chance to get some food and tea in his mouth, Yunjin said, "We've got the house to ourselves today, so we can relax and stuff."
He paused for a moment, eating a little bit more, and then said, very slightly uncertain about bringing up the topic, "It's been about six months since you moved in, how are you feeling settling in wise?"
He wanted to hear what Theo had to say before he started bringing up the bigger future questions.

Theo looked at Yunjin as he started talking, giving his boyfriend a groggy smile at the mention of having the house to themselves, but it fell slightly as Yunjin continued talking. "There has definitely been some ups and downs, and getting used to each other's habits, but at this point I'm honestly glad that it worked out as smoothly as it did, despite any bumps we came across. And it's definitely been easier to adjust to Thomas not being around with more than just me and Teagan in an apartment. Even if it was just barely big enough for the three of us." He rambled, still sounding groggy despite waking up slightly at food and tea.

Yunjin listened to Theo's explanation, glad that it meshed pretty well with what he had himself experienced with the settling in period. Overall, things had gone on the smoother end of what he would have expected. The biggest downs had honestly probably fallen between Taijia and Teagan who still just didn't really get each other. They seemed to have settled on a truce though, where they mostly just ignored each other. It helped that the combined household was very much in favor of letting their friends come over and letting them go to their friends' places.
Once Theo seemed to be winding down on saying things, Yunjin replied, "I'm glad that that seems consistent with what I was seeing."
He paused for a moment, thinking over which direction he wanted to go next. Finally, he settled on saying, "I'm definitely happy that you moved in, even with the slight bobbles, and it feels like we're making this big step work pretty well. It makes me want to think about the next steps more. The do we want to get married at some point steps, and the do you want to go back to school at some point steps, and the how do we support Tai and Teagan through the growing up phases steps."
He made a face trying to figure out what he wanted to say next, then grinned and shook his head a little bit. He said, "I feel like this isn't coming out of my mouth nearly as well as I put it together in my head, but I do want to figure out what we're looking at doing next as a team, and be able to support each other in that. A lot of what we have here, with the house and stuff, is based on decisions that I made that didn't have you in them yet because we'd not met. So I want to make sure that you are equally involved in the next steps."

Theo gave Yunjin a half smile at the mention of them feeling the same way about all the changes and the hiccups the came across on the way. Even though their relationship had gotten serious, especially since he and his brothers had moved in, but to hear the "marriage" word made him choke on his breakfast for a moment. After he stopped choking, and was sure Yunjin was done talking, he cleared his throat and began speaking slowly. "I have... admittedly never thought about marriage, simply because until now, I never really was given the opportunity. But to say it hasn't crossed my mind a few times, especially now that we're living together, would be a complete lie." He paused for a bit, a hand going up to his face and resting under his chin.
"I know I used to talk about going back to school, and at some point I would still like to be able to focus on my art instead of having a side job, but ever since I got promoted to manager, I'm comfortable in my finances and actually really love what I'm doing. Plus, it's not a very high stress job despite being manager, and so when I come home, I don't need to unwind and can just focus on art once I'm home."
He was quiet for a bit, finishing up his food as he tried to think of an answer for Yunjin's last question. "I was... not as present as I could have been while Thomas was growing up. I don't know that I did much better with Teagan. But they're growing up well, which I'm thankful for. I think Teagan was too excited to get a 'little brother' type person in the same house as him, and I noticed a lot of the issues seemed to spark from Teagan trying to treat Tai like a little kid, which I can tell Tai is quite independent and adverse to that sort of treatment. I think if I can find a way to talk to Teagan about how he's treating Tai, their relationship might improve at least a little bit..." He faded off, looking to Yunjin with a somewhat hesitant look in his eye. "Exactly... what kind of next steps where you thinking?"

Yunjin listened carefully to what Theo was saying. It sounded like things were pretty alright for Theo where they were, but he wanted to make sure that Theo knew that he had his back for the financial side of things. He said gently, "I'm glad that the job is working pretty well for you right now. Just keep me in the loop about the going back to school thing. Sheng and I own the house at this point, so the general cost of existence isn't as high as it could be. I don't want you to have to worry about the financial side of things too much. I'm in a very stable place when it comes to a job, so we can make decisions from that stable place."
When Theo asked about what next steps he was particularly thinking of, Yunjin smiled, a touch of shyness to it, and answered, "I didn't have one particular thing in mind exactly. Though I guess, at some point we should have a more in depth conversation about whether getting married at some point is where we think this is going. And like how we would want to handle it if we do."
He was relieved when Theo mentioned that he'd noticed some of the issues with Teagan and Tai, and he said, "Yeah, mentioning to Teagan that he would probably get a better response if he gave Tai more room is probably not bad. But it's also just partially Tai being prickly. I'm pretty sure that Anya's the only person that he's close to that he really accepts not being able to properly speak Chinese or Korean to, and even then, he's working on her Korean."
He looked thoughtfully at Theo and asked, "Maybe even more than what next steps I was thinking of though, are there any next steps in life and relationship stuff that you were thinking of?"

Theo nodded absent-mindedly, staring at the table as he took in what Yunjin was telling him. "That... sounds good, and I'll definitely keep you in the loop on my school decisions. I've honestly gotten over most of the bitterness of not having been able to finish college when I was so close to graduating, and I think that bitterness would be gone completely if it weren't for.. y'know, school loans." He rested his chin on his hands. "Rather than go back full time, though, I wouldn't mind taking a class or two at the CC, for example Chinese, or maybe an art class or two there. Kind of... dip my toes into the water after being away for so long."
He nodded, sitting up and stretching a bit. "Yeah, I can tell him to back off a bit. I think it would be better that way anyway. Teagan can befriend Taijia without smothering the kid, and I don't think he realizes he's doing that." He smiled a little, "Maybe we can convince Tai to teach him Chinese?" He only half-joked.
His face sobered again and he tapped his chin against his hands lightly in thought. "I honestly think I've been playing it by ear for so long I kind of forgot how to plan for the future. To think too far ahead still gets scary sometimes, but it's not to the point of being oppresively overwhelming anymore, which I'm thankful for. Plus I've wanted a career in art for so long that thinking ahead was either grim - never selling art and being broke - or whimsical - becoming a famous artist, living a lavish life - that now that I have a job I actually really like and is pretty stable, I don't really know how to approach the future. I think... I think I can see marriage in my future," he felt a bit warm, like he was possibly blushing slightly, "and in terms of relationship stuff, that is the obvious next step." He paused, "I've always gone and back on forth on if I wanted kids, and after raising my brothers I think I'd enjoy a quiet few years once they've both moved out, but working with LGBTQ youth and I mean, some of them have had a really tough life..." He laughed, "It takes all my effort to not tell them I'm their dad now."

Yunjin smiled at Theo's rambling thoughts on trying to maybe try academics again and said, "That sounds like a good place to start if you want to try it. That way, you won't overload yourself, but you can see how you're feeling. I can help with that set up if you want me to, but if you want to pace it on your own and not have me get too involved in the academic side of things, just let me know if you need any resources. I know far far too much about how the community college works because I got a lot of the Running Start program stuff dumped on me at the high school. Which I realize now that I've said it you probably know, because Thomas was coming to me with that stuff."
He hoped that the point he was trying to make got across. He didn't want to micromanage Theo about school things, and he knew that it was a place where their lives had taken them very different places.
Yunjin laughed at Theo's suggestion and said, "I'm not sure Tai completely has the idea of how people learn languages down. He'd be a good Chinese practice partner because I'm fairly certain it's the language he's the most comfortable in, but I've seen him trying to help Anya with her Korean, and he's doing OK when there's a structure, but he hasn't got a great grasp of how quickly things stick. I mean, he's ten, so that's not surprising. But, if you wanted to give Teagan the chance to try to learn Chinese, there are Chinese classes for kids that are free at the temple. I think that Thomas mentioned that you all did them when you were very young, but he was the only one who went through all the levels? Tai did them for a while, but the social aspect daunted him a little bit, so he focused more on some of the more focused activities, and Sheng and I went over stuff with him at home. Plus his dance classes started taking up pretty much all the times he could have gone to classes."
When Theo said that he thought that he could see marriage as a possibility in the future, Yunjin reached across the table and squeezed his hand lightly. He said, "Me too, so I'm glad we're on the same basic page on that front. We can talk about it more later, circle back to the idea."
He nodded emphatically to what Theo was saying about kids. He said, "I love Tai dearly, and I fought a really rough legal battle to be able to keep guardianship of him, but I've also been his guardian since I was nineteen, and involved in his childcare since I was eighteen. Maybe I'll want my own kids, our kids, at some point, and I love kids, but not yet. Not until things are a little bit more settled, and I do think that part of it will be the boys being at least moved out enough that they're on their own life paths and us getting a chance to figure ourselves out as adults who didn't end up taking care of kids far too young."

Theo chuckled softly at Yunjin's ramble, nodding slightly in confirmation. "I'll be sure to let you know if I need help. For now, I think I'm just going to continue debating. It's right in the middle of a semester anyway, right? I've got a bit of time to find out which class I'd like to start with, and how I'd like to proceed as well."
He sipped at his tea until he was sure his boyfriend was done talking. "Yeah, I have noticed Anya sometimes looks... very confused. But I'm honestly impressed at how quickly she's learning. I wonder if she finally got her dad to speak Korean with her as well." He nodded again, "Yeah. I think I went until I was like... nine or ten, actually maybe twelve or so, and Teagan barely lasted a couple years. I don't remember exactly why that was the case, though. I'll have to bring it up to him, he might be interested in learning Chinese again, especially now that we're in a house where it's practically the main language." He only half joked.
Theo looked down at their hands and smiled, his face softening as he seemd to relax. "Okay." He said quietly.
Theo gave Yunjin a quick nod. "I definitely have to agree. And we're still young, too. It wouldn't be far-fetched for us to wait... hell even ten years - though I don't want to think of being that close to 40." He let out a laugh before continuing, "Before we had kids of our own. Y'know, the kind that we don't have to fight life and limb to keep in our possession and aren't related to us via other family members."

Yunjin smiled a little bit and said, voice soft, "I really hope I get to look forward to being almost forty, and even older than that with you."
Turning it back to the topic of kids he said, "And honestly, considering that one of the paths open to us would be adopting, and honestly, I'm not sure that I have a strong interest in infant care ever, if we were adopting in a decade, we'd be a perfectly reasonable age for parents of an elementary school student."
He laughed at himself a little bit and added, "But I think that that's a conversation to circle back to maybe even further down the line. It sounds like we're on a similar page about it. And I know what you mean about the queer kids who just really need someone to be their parent right. I've got plenty of them in the GSA at school. Some of them may even be the same kids."

Theo scrunched up his nose, "Cute. Can you imagine us being old men?" He asked with a laugh. "I hope we get to sit on our porch in rocking chairs and talk about all those young whippersnappers and what they're up to these day - did I just make my wedding vows?" He asked with a laugh. Planning for the future would definitely be something he'd have to get used to, not because he didn't think he'd make it that far, though there was a short period of time after his parents died, but rather because he'd never had to, or been able to, think more than a couple years ahead at most.
He nodded, "That... actually very well could be. Quite a few of them are in high school, and I often highly suggest them join GSA, not... just because my boyfriend is the one to run it, but so they can have a community and safe space at school as well."

Yunjin let out a snort of laughter at Theo's description of them being old men together. He replied, "If I'm anything like my grandmother was in her old age, I'll be keeping myself busy playing instruments or singing at charity events, and hugely political, and very grumpy at people half my age who can't keep up with the way the world changes."
He added, "I mean, if those were your wedding vows, I'd have to practice to keep a calm face, but I'm down for the idea in general."
He thought about it for a second and said, "I can imagine us getting old together, but I don't know what we'll be like when we're old. I'd like to imagine us as old men together, with our weird but awesome family around us."
He nodded at Theo's comment about the GSA kids and replied, "And I make sure that all the kids in GSA know that the resources from the center are there."

Theo chuckled. "Your grandmother sounds like she was a great person." He tried to think back on his own grandparents, but he really couldn't remember much of anything about them, besides that they called him by his Chinese name or Xiao Wang and he was a lot more comfortable in Chinese when he was younger than he was even now. "But I can, 100% imagine you being like that when you grow old." He told Yunjin with a laugh.
He laughed again at Yunjin's comments about his wedding vows. "Well, if I'm actually going to use it, I'll have to write it down or I'll forget." His smile softened, "I'd probably want to think of something... maybe not less humorous necessarily, but more serious."
He fidgeted with his hands as Yunjin talked. "That does sound great. Being surrounded by family, while living a peaceful life together. Honestly, with everything going on, this is probably one of the first times in a long time I've truly been able to envision it..." He looked around at the empty house. "I blame the current atmosphere. I want... many more mornings like this one."
He wanted to get off the serious talk, it was making him fidgety and he also felt like it was maybe too early in the morning to get serious about everything. Something in Yunjin's words reminded him of something exciting, though. "Oh! The CEO told me they were working on a way to get hormone and STI testing done at the clinic. We're hitting some roadblocks since we want to do informed consent for both of those but also make it available for minors - of a reasonable age, of course - so the city is fighting us a bit, but in general, that is services we will be getting, and is something you can let the students know now as well."
