Tai smiled at her, glad that she was interested in trying one of the choreos that he'd already designed. He came back over to where she was watching so that he could cue the music back up and grab the little remote control that would let him start and pause it and adjust the speed.
He told her, "You can definitely record it, but we can also break it down into pieces first, and you can record each section so that you can practice them one at a time, a little bit slower first and then we can speed it up. Before we do any recording though, we should work out what we're going to have you do for the trick, and we should also warm up."
He looked thoughtful for a second and asked, "Are you able to do the splits? Either direction? We can work that into a stunt if you can. It tends to impress people, but we don't want you to got hurt. I don't know exactly how flexible you are though. It's not come up when we've practiced together before. Or a cartwheel, can you do a cartwheel?"
He was trying to think of things that were simpler than an aerial that she could use to get an effect that mimicked the one given by the three person stunt at the beginning of the "Me Gustas Tu" choreo.
He cued up different music with a good steady beat and said, "Let's start warming up though, so that there isn't a chance of you hurting yourself while we practice."
He was already warmed up, but the focus here was making sure that Anya was ready.

Anya thought for a moment, not responding to his question right away but beginning to warm up. "I almost can. With some practice I probably could." She said confidently. "And yeah, I can do cartwheels, too." She finished up her stretching after a few minutes, bouncing back onto her feet and giving Taijia a grin. "Why, what did you have in mind?" She was excited to begin practicing, having a planned choreography already made it seem more real.

Tai nodded approvingly as she started her warm up. He continued to do some easy steps of his own to keep warm while he waited for her to respond. He was thinking through things that he might have to modify from the choreography that he'd done for himself if he was teaching it to Anya, and it wasn't as much as he would have worried it might be.
Once she responded, he told her, "That stunt is the biggest part that would be hard for you, but one thing that could work would be starting from the kneeling, standing up with some sort of jump, then going into a cartwheel and then into the splits. We'll have to work on the stunt as its own thing though. I know that we can figure out something for you to do, even a cartwheel itself if worked in well can look pretty impressive."
He waited for the first two songs on his warm up playlist to finish and then he asked, "Which song do you want to start with? When you get tired and need a break, we can record some while you stretch and rest."

"Let's start with Me Gustas Tu," Anya said after a few moments of musings. "I've never done a cartwheel directly into the splits." She told him, and she sounded a bit nervous about it, but even more excited at the thought of learning it. She nodded, "Sounds good, that will give me a chance to learn some of it before recording it, too."

Once Tai judged that both of them were warmed up enough, he beckoned Anya to come stand by him where they could see the floor length mirrors that his Uncles had hung up along one wall for him. He said, "We're going to go through the first choreographic phrase slowly a few times, then with half time music a few times, and then we can try it with the music together. I'm going to talk you through what we're doing, but try to follow along by watching me too. You can use the mirror and standing a little bit behind me."
He dropped to a kneeling position, getting his arms into the right pose and said, "We're going to start in the kneeling pose of the person at the front of formation, arms above the head a little bit bent and crossed at the wrist like this. Then we open and close the hands like this, and drop the hands with a little bit of a turning motion, and as we bring the arms in, we stand and that leads into the crossed arms. That's where the actual footwork starts."
He watched over his shoulder in the mirror to see if Anya was following along. Then, he started the footwork, "Step out with one foot, change the weight over to the other leg, and then as you step forward with the foot that you stepped out with the first time, arms drop so that you can hold your hands together behind you. Then step back, and this is where it will end up speeding up some."
He didn't speed up for then though, making sure that Anya was at least going to get to see it nice and slow once, though he'd for sure go over each part in detail with her as they went over it. Plus, it was easier for him to explain aloud if they went slowly. He generally learned things by watching, but he didn't know what would work best for Anya yet. He continued, "Now you step back and release your hands, though they're still down to start with. Step out to one side and send a hand kind of like a punch in that same direction, bring your feet together and arms sweep past each other like this, then step to the other side and bring the feet together bringing the arms through a sweeping motion into this like 'I did it' motion, turn to face forward with a fist pump and then wrap around the head with your same hand. Point forward as you move your weight, and then do a little skipping rope motion, before walking forward on the beat for two steps."
He stopped there and said, "And that's where the trick is going to happen, so we're going to stop there and just work on that phrase for a little bit."
He hopped that with the visuals and him explaining it, it made enough sense that Anya felt like she had the start of an idea of what she was doing. He added, hoping that it was reassuring, "We're going to run that a few more times before we even bring in half speed music."

Anya followed Taijia's lead obediently, taking careful note of each and every movement her friend did. "Cool!" She said excitedly as he mentioned where the trick would be. She was excited about the fact her brain was letting her remember the steps already, practicing some of the arm movements as they rested in between practices. But it was promising to her, like something she was unsure of before now seemed finite, and even reachable. If she was lucky, she'd only need to watch the recording a couple times, to remember the more difficult parts, because at this rate she was confident in memorizing this dance.
As she got stuck at a place in the arm movements, her smile faltered finally, and she gave Taijia a nod. She knew she wouldn't be able to get the dance immediately, but another part of her was frustrasted that she'd been practicing dancing for so long now and wasn't yet perfect, even though she knew that asking too much of anyone.

When they finished, Tai nodded and said, "Good job. That's a good start!"
He had noted the part that Anya had gotten stuck on a little bit, and he watched as she ran through some of the hand movements, and when she got to the one that had given her trouble, he closer and helped her get the arm movements right, guiding her through it, first by showing her and then by nudging her elbows into the right positions.
He smiled and said, "Ready to try running through that part a few more times this way, and then we can add music? Hopefully, we can get through a few phrases today, and we can talk about the trick. Whenever you get tired and need a rest, we can record me doing it. And I can do a couple of ideas for the trick for you to record if you want to try doing them at home."

Anya watched and mimicked Taijia as he silently led her through the part she was forgetting, giving him a nod of thanks after they finished. She nodded, "Let's do that, and yeah, that sounds good, too. Let's go over it a few times and then I'll get recordings of some ideas for the trick that you have." She agreed.

After a few more slow run-throughs, Taijia nodded and told Anya softly, "Let's try it with half speed music. It looks like you've gotten the hang of the basic part."
He went and fiddled with the laptop set up, putting the settings that he wanted on the song, and then set it to start on a ten second delay. He hurried over so that he would still be where Anya could see him while she tried the slowed down version of the song. He watched her carefully, checking to see if she was looking comfortable with the first phrase of the song.
Once they got to the part of the song where the trick would be, Tai walked over to the music to stop it and turned back to see how Anya seemed to be feeling.

As her time at Taijia's house ended, Anya felt much more confident about auditioning. She still had a lot of practice ahead of her, but she was ready. She could only hope her mom would agree to give her a spot in the garage so she could practice without disturbing her parents or Remi. She did wish she could stay longer, but she knew better than to push it. And the videos she got on her phone would definitely be sufficient enough that she wouldn't have too much trouble figuring out the more difficult parts on her own. She was ready for this.
