Inkar had been surprised relatively early in the school year that there were three whole nights a week that she was the first of her siblings to get home from activities. Aiday was doing theater now that she was in high school, and she'd finally gotten to the point that she wasn't trying to hang out with Inkar's friends more than her own. Aibek was taking a chess class that met three times a week. Inzhu and Erasyl were both doing club soccer, and their mom had put Anara and Serik in swim lessons that met at the same community center at about the same time, so that she only had to ferry the lot of them over there in one set.
Inkar had been surprised the second time when she'd asked her mom if she could have a few friends come over and study, friends who were boys even, and her mom had said yes. Her dad and Timur weren't usually back from work yet, and she'd kind of expected that her mom would say something about if she wanted to study with them specifically so much, she could find space at the library to do it.
She'd not necessarily expected that Thomas and Kangwan would say yes to coming over to her place to study, but she and Kangwan had math and science together that year, and Thomas liked to help people study, and they'd both been helping him with his Korean. Her dad had been super proud that it was making her Korean better too because she'd actually talked with her grandparents when he'd done their monthly Skype call. Inkar had never been that interested before, but she figured that if she was actually practicing, she might as well put it to use. It had been gratifying to see her grandparents look so happy with her though.
Thomas had liked the idea, and now she was frantically tidying her room on a Wednesday afternoon while the two of them went to go get pastries and boba tea before meeting her there. She kept half an ear out for the doorbell while grumbling to herself that she'd told Aiday to clean up her part of the room. She wanted her friends to actually enjoy coming over to study.
