Thomas was anxious. It was the last time that he'd call Kangwan before they saw each other in person again. His boyfriend had been gone all summer, back in Korea with his band, doing what he loved, and Thomas was relieved that he was coming back, but also worried that it would be too different somehow. It wasn't a terribly rational worry. They'd been talking a lot, of course some things were changing, but everything changing seemed to be good things.
He also was nervous because he had a surprise for Kangwan over this call. He'd finished the summer intensive Korean course at Golden West the week before, so he'd be starting with Korean 4 in the fall term, and he felt confident enough after getting a nearly perfect score on the final, and a perfect score on the oral part of the exam, to actually show off how much better he'd gotten.
As soon as he saw Kangwan's Skype status go to available, he hit the call button, mentally rehearsing what he'd been wanting to say. He was relieved when Kangwan picked up the video call almost right away, and he smiled shyly before saying, in carefully enunciated Korean, "Hi Kangwan! I am excited that this is the last call before the end of the summer, and I will be seeing you soon. I finished the summer Korean course, and I have a surprise for you. This is part of it. The other one is that I am starting to put together the applications for university in Korea."
He smiled and waited, and he hoped desperately that he hadn't said any of that wrong. He added with a little squeak, remembering to say it in Korean, "I love you."

Kangwan was excited when he got a video call from Thomas. He was headed back to the States soon, but missed his boyfriend nonetheless. He was in the office-turned-studio in the dorm, trying to get some privacy to talk with his boyfriend. He was surprised when Thomas began talking to him in Korean, but the smile only grew on his face with each new sentence. His brain seemed slow to process what Thomas was telling him, and he belated clapped excitedly at hearing Thomas was planning to go to college in Korea. That would make it much easier for them to stay together. Even though knetizens were more stalker-y than American fans, at least in Korea, things like holding hands wouldn't be looked down upon. Of course, they couldn't kiss or anything, obviously, but they'd be together.
"Wow, you're so good!" He praised in Korean, clapping for him. "Can I make you talk to my band? Yah! Come here guys!" He said, the first part in English, but not waiting for an answer before he called in his band.

Thomas grinned at Kangwan's praise, blushing a little bit and murmured in English, "I practiced most of it with either Inkar or Jess or my teacher to make sure I wouldn't sound ridiculous."
He looked up when Kangwan started calling his band in, and asked, suddenly shy, "Will they like me OK? Are you sure that..."
He trailed off, not quite sure what to say and looking past Kangwan to see how they would be when they came in. He'd seen these people on screen but until right then, they'd been mostly a concept, people who Kangwan talked about and who he watched when he looked at shows his boyfriend had been on, but he hadn't really thought about talking to them.
He added quietly to Kangwan, "What if they think that my Korean is awful?"

Kangwan noticed Thomas get nervous suddenly and he smiled, "They'll like you just fine. I've talked about you a bit, they know you're not Korean, they won't expect perfection." He promised. He looked back as his band shuffled in, his leader muttering about the maknae having the nerve to use "yah" with them. "Hyungs, look what Thomas can do." He said, excitedly pointing to the computer screen.

Thomas covered his face for a moment, trying to hide his nerves over suddenly being on the spot. He took a few deep breaths and glanced at the people hovering behind his boyfriend. He knew that Kangwan was excited and wanted to show him off, and that counted for a lot, but he was also suddenly kind of scared.
His voice cracked a little bit as he said, "Hello, nice to meet you," in Korean, remembering to use the formal word since several of them were older than him. He added, "Kangwan has told me lots of good things about you."
It took him a moment to search for words, and then he managed to get out, "My name is Thomas. I was just telling Kangwan, I am trying to apply to University in Korea for the next year."
He hoped that that was a good start. He watched Kangwan's reaction, flicking his eyes to the others intermittently. He remembered that Kangwan had said that one of his bandmates was Chinese speaking as well, and he was glad he'd been practicing, because maybe that would be a good way to make himself seem friendly. He was nervous about that too though, because he was still not as good with what was technically his first language as he wished that he was.

Kangwan was beaming, as if he were a parent watching their child get an award, and clapped enthusiastically once Thomas seemed like he was done.
"Nice job, dude!" Kangwan's bandmate, Joshua said, giving Thomas a thumbs up.
"This will be interesting..." ShiHyun began, not looking at either the video nor Kangwan initially, but his eyes bore into Kangwan's as he continued, "Hopefully no one finds out you two are dating. That would be too big a scandal."
Kangwan frowned, but said nothing, looking down at his lap.
Joshua patted ShiHyun's shoulder. "It won't happen, don't worry." He reassured his band mate. "Kangwannie is smarter than that."
Kangwan decided it was a good time to change the subject, looking back at Thomas, his grin revitalized. "Have you still been practicing Chinese, too? Kiwoong can test you." He said, a teasing look sparkling in his eyes.

Thomas wanted to reach through his screen to pat Kangwan's shoulder, seeing the worry that was there as Kangwan's bandmate, ShiHyun he reminded himself, expressed concern. He put together his sentence carefully if a little bit awkwardly in Korean in response to ShiHyun's concern, "I do not know if it is a helpful thing, but I am in general a very private person. I know that it is a big deal for Kangwan if there is something found out, and I would be doing everything I could to be careful."
He held his breath a little bit, hoping that what he'd said made enough sense even if he didn't say it well precisely. He knew most of the words that he'd needed, but he wasn't sure he'd constructed the sentence correctly with word forms and such. Or if in some cases there was a different word that would make more sense in the context he was trying to use it.
Thomas smiled at Joshua, relieved that he was supportive of the thought at least. It was good to know that there was someone on Kangwan's side in the room with him.
Thomas laughed a little bit when Kangwan asked him about Chinese, glad for a distraction. He turned to Kiwoong, Qǐwàng (企望) he reminded himself, and said in Mandarin, "Hello Qǐwàng (企望), I'm Qīwàng (期望). It had been a while since I'd been properly practicing my Chinese because I was the only one of my brothers who really spoke it with our parents, but I've been taking classes in it again, since I'm already at the college for the summer. I'm sorry if I still revert to sounding about twelve when I speak it though. Hopefully, by next year, I'll be completely talking like an adult in Chinese. It's very nice to meet you."
He was more confident of himself in Chinese honestly. For all that he was rusty, he knew when a word wasn't the right one, even if he sometimes had trouble finding the right one. He turned with a little smile to Kangwan and said in English, "You'll have to ask Kiwoong how that was, but honestly I'm more comfortable with Chinese than Korean, I'm taking classes at Golden West for that too, but it wasn't as exciting of news for you."

Kangwan chuckled, his smile widening as Kiwoong muttered something. "He said it was good. He looks forward to meeting you for real because he doesn't get to speak Chinese often. He almost forgot what it sounded like." He turned back to Kiwoong, pouting a bit, "Don't you still call your parents every week? Do you speak to them in Korean?" He asked in Korean, his voice holding a hint of teasing in it.
"Of course I don't. But they're my parents. It doesn't count." Kiwoong retorted, lightly shoving Kangwan.
Kangwan smiled, looking to Thomas. Though the smile hovered on his face, his eyes seemed sad, "I miss you, Thomas. I can't wait for you to be here with me. Even if we still wouldn't get to see each other very often, at least we'd be in the same time zone still. I think you'd really like it here, too." He told him softly.
